This is a bit off topic but does anyone know if a GTX 660ti will work in a 1,1 or 2,1? I have a GTX 570 now but would enjoy the slight performance bump, temp and energy decrease and double the VRAM of the 660ti.

660 would be a decrease in CUDA and OpenCL from a 570, if those are important to you.

I use OpenCL when using Adobe Premire for rendering so that is something to consider. Thanks.

@MacVidCards - I did more comparing of the two cards and the 660ti has 1344 CUDA cores compared to the 570 having only 480 CUDA cores. I guess I don't understand how that translates into a loss of performance moving to the 660ti. The memory bandwidth is really the only stat about the 660ti that I can find that is lower than the 570 (192 vs 320 respectively).

Hi, it's great to see the fantastic work done here!

I have a 1,1 with the following specs:
  • 4x2.66
  • 10 GB
  • RAID 0 (dual 120GB SSDs) as startup disk
  • RAID 0 (triple 750GB HDDs)
  • Single 1 TB
  • 7300GT graphics card

In order to try this stuff out, I understand I need a new graphics card. What do you guys see as the cheapest one that should work? Also, do you think my drives will work as set above?

I know nothing is finalized, but it seems my hardware will have to be in order before trying anything and appreciate your thoughts!

depends if you need/want bootscreens or not.

cheapest without EFI/bootscreens might be an NVIDIA GeForce 210.
cheapest with working EFI/bootscreens might be a flashed GeForce GT-120 from MVC. or maybe a used Radeon 5770.

Definitely need a new card. I use an XFX 6870 I got for 55 GBP off ebay

Thanks for the recommendations. Very helpful! I figure having the boot screens would be nice. I'm new to the hacked OS on these machines. Is there a wiki somewhere that has verified compatibility (probably just covering Mavericks).

The first thing I see when I turn my Mac Pro on is the chameleon boot list. I also see the Apple logo and the 10.10 progress bar :apple: Using non Mac card

You see the boot logo because that is part of chameleon. With a non flashed or non apple card then the first thing you will see is the desktop when using a method like Tiamo's for Mavericks.

--------------

@schalliol - I just put a GT 610 in a free Core2Duo computer that I got and it is running Mavericks great. I picked it up at Best Buy on sale for $40.

In my Mac Pro I am using a MSI GTX 570 Twin Frozr III PE/OC and it has been flawless besides not having the boot screen, but that doesn't bother me at all. I dual boot Window 7 and Mavericks normally using BootChamp (yes it is Champ and not Camp), but right now I am triple booting Win/Mav/Yose using Clover.

Do all versions of this card work? Or do they need to be a specific "Mac" version?

Most non Apple cards will work with 10.7+. You just will not get the boot screen. You should also make sure any card you choose only has the two 6pin power plugs. Anything with an 8pin could damage your board.

I just ordered a flashed RADEON 5770 1GB GDDR5 card on eBay, which apparently is even showing Yosemite screens in the listing. It sounds like this should do the trick and provide the boot screens too. This guy is providing with it a "1 part" "Boot Screen Enforcer".

Any luck with iMessage and DP7? :apple:

iMessage is working for me using Clover. I have had to call Apple several times though with an authorization code to get iMessage activated. They don't seem to have a problem that I am on a Legacy Mac Pro and that it shouldn't be running Mavericks or Yosemite. I suspect that it stops working because I have been making hardware changes and their servers see that something is "wrong" when the UUID or serial number doesn't match the hardware it should.

A flashed AMD card should show the boot screens.

Thanks! Could you walk us through the authorization process for iMessage? That would be helpful if so! I'm not aware of where someone could put in an authorization code.

You have to call Apple Care and give them the authorization code. When I was trying to login to iMessage (which was previously working before upgrading the processors and updating the firmware) it would say something like "This Apple ID cannot be used to activate iMessage at this time..." It would have a 12 digit code to give to Apple Care. Just give them a call and they will need to verify your account and you will have to give them a temporary support pin generated from appleid.apple.com so they can access your account. Then give them the 12 code and then it should work.

I have been getting this same message when trying to use iMessage on my hackintosh running Mavericks using chameleon but I haven't tried calling Apple care about that one since I rarely use it and it is just for my kids to play games.

When calling, be prepared to also provide a valid REAL mac serial number or have a creative though plausible made up excuse as to why you are unable to furnish one.

Good call! It sounds like giving the Mac Pro's serial ought to be fine.

Yes my Mac Pro's actual serial number has been fine. My hackintosh is using a serial and smbios for an iMac 8,1 generated from Chameleon Wizard. Part of the reason I haven't called about that one. FileNVRAM is in place there but it is not working like it did on the Mac Pro when running 10.9 originally. It did work for a week or two though. I think they might have changed the check on the server side because my Mac Pro iMessage originally stopped working the same day.

need help with getting sound working

Hi all-

First, thank to all who've worked so hard in getting Yosemite where it is today. Thanks to the details provided here, I've been able to get my Mac Pro 1,1 running Yosemite with the latest public beta. Up until recently, I've been using ML and Mavericks via Chamelon, but recently learned about tiamo's masterpiece. I have my "main" drive running 10.9 with this now. I've also performed the "usual" improvement of a stock apple 5770 graphics card, and 5355 CPUs, with 1.1 to 2.1 firmware upgrade.

I'm currently running 10.10 using Clover, and it appears everything is working except sound. I think I'm having the same issues as Rough Edge, and when I try to run the sound fix (either using the applescript or directly via terminal commands), I'm getting similar messages about not able to unload the ktext, and unable to find the ktext to load.

I'm probably missing something very obvious here, so any extra details would be appreciated.

FYI, the only real issue I ran into with the 10.10 Clover install was figuring out I was putting config.plist into the wrong location. :)

I've also ordered some cards to see if I can get handoff/continuity working. I'll post here anything useful I find.

Many thanks again to everyone.

Chris

See post #377 by winch for audio when using Clover.

Thanks I missed that post.

I found that I was missing the inject Audio 12 flag, as well as the HDA_8000 True (if memory serves) I still must be missing something, because still no audio. If I use that attached config.plist as-is, it will boot in to Yosemite, but still no sound (and it seems like ethernet quit working as well).

This morning, I thought I'd try Chamelon again, using the "Chameleon for Yosemite" files. I just wrote over my existing BOOT, followed instructions for Extras folder, inserted my serial number into the plist, and removed set Graphics Enabler = yes. It would boot directly into Yosemite without re-installing, but still no audio.
