Resolved 2006/2007 Mac Pro (1,1/2,1) and OS X Yosemite

Alternative install method using Target Disk Mode
So the thumb drive install just refused to work for me. It kept kept getting stuck on "Still waiting on root device" (figure this out using Hennesie2000's verbose boot.efi... thanks H!). So I wen't to plan B, put my MP1,1 into target disk mode, and installed using my MBP. It was stupid simple, and I figured I share here, since I've gotten so much info from this thread... Here goes:
1. Create a bootable USB stick containing the installer. Instructions on how to can be found at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5856
2. Boot the MP into Target Disk Mode. This can be done either using the Startup Disk prefpane, or holding T while booting.
3. Connect MBP (or whatever other mac you have that supports Yosemite) to MP using Firewire.
4. Boot the MBP using the USB installer stick you created in step 1 (hold option key while booting, then select the stick).
5. Pick the hd or partition on the MP you want to install Yosemite on, and let the installer do it's thing and let it reboot the first time.
6. The second time it wants to reboot, hold the option key and make it boot from your regular drive. When you are back to your MBP's desktop, you should still see the MP's hd mounted on your desktop (or Finder).
7. Show hidden files in the finder using the following commands in a Terminal window:
% defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
% killall Finder
8. Get a copy of Pike Alpha's modified boot.efi (avail. in post #1566 in this thread), and copy it to the following locations on the MP's hd:
/System/Library/CoreServices (you will have to unlock the existing one first, using the Finder's Get Info window)
/usr/standalone/i386
9. Re-hide hidden files using cmds in step 7, but say NO instead of YES.
10. Turn off MP, reboot holding option key, and select the disk or partition you installed Yosemite onto. Complete the install as usual.
Thanks to Pike Alpha for creating boot.efi, and also Hennesie2000 whose documentation of the thumb drive process that help me understand what had to happen.
So, my 2006 1,1 that I upgraded to dual Xeon e5345's three years ago, but has been living on Lion the last two years, gets to live another day! Oh, I did have to get a new video card... snagged a original Apple ATI Radeon HD5770.

I've written up the instructions for how to make a USB Installer. I know there are other guides already published, but I've tried to expand out some of the individual steps in more detail for those that haven't done this before.
It is a mix of multiple people's guides, but is the method I've been using since Mountain Lion.

I am almost done creating the installation using the method shared by Hennesie2000, I had included in the "PlatformSupport.plist" the two board ID's, underneath there a list with the mac models supported, 1,1 and 2,1 models are not listed, do I have to include those models also?.

First, a big THANK YOU to Pike and others who have made it possible for me to upgrade my Mac Pro 1,1!
I replaced the graphics card with the XFX HD 6670, which is currently under $70 at Amazon, and while I don't get the immediate boot screen, the card itself works great in both Lion and now the release version of Yosemite (no need for any sort of ktext hacks, just plug and play). The only issue with it is that the risers on the bottom of the card made it impossible to plug into the original graphics card slot, I had to move it up one slot. So it's not running at peak speed -- but that's not a big deal for me, it's still faster than the original card. Hope that helps someone else...

When I play MKV files I've ripped from my DVD movie collection, I can hear music, but movie dialogue is either completely absent or very difficult to hear.
I didn't have this issue in Lion, and I *think* I'm only seeing the issue in 5.1-encoded audio. Old movies, comedy specials bought online, etc. sound just fine.
Any ideas?

that is interesting no luck Yosemites with Wake on Lan but Mavericks work just fine. odd Maybe will try restore Yosemite
Optical -- TOSlink cable to my home theater receiver. Same config as I was using in Lion.

That's a kernel panic and it could be caused by many things. See if you can capture what it says on your screen because it might give a hint. Also try booting in verbose mode that might give you an idea what's wrong too.
I just tried to take a picture but this time the screen appears just fractions of a second, not enough time to take a capture with my phone, is there another solution Hennesie2000?. I will repeat the process to create the USB installer tonight.

Try unplugging all usb devices except for your mouse and keyboard. I use the slo-mo video feature of my iPhone to be able to see what pops up in kernel panics sometimes.

Did anyone manage to have 2 graphic cards running in the MacPro2,1 under Yosemite ?
I have 2 GT610 (1x2GB, 1x1GB)...
Under Mavericks I found a trick (hack) to make them both running.
Under Yosemite no chance...
Cards are recognized by the system but only one could work or even none of the displays showed desktop...
Looking for some help...

When my Mac Pro was working I had my GTX 570 and a 2600XT working at the same time both using HDMI.

I had reinstalled Yosemite, but now I don´t see the letters just the grey screen with the apple logo and no spinning wheel, I can´t pass that stage. I have a genius wireless mouse that I use¨The USB device to connect the wireless mouse is attached to a USB port on the back of the monitor¨, I also have an internal bluray that I had added some time ago.
I had never ecountered any issue upgrading previous OS versions with these devices on the computer. What might be the isse?.

I can't give you much of an idea of how I got FileVault enabled, but using a Recovery partition enabler, I got it to work under 10.9.5, and from there it seems that the YOSX upgrade is working.

Lets try to start from the beginning because you have had lots of trouble where others have succeeded. Lets try to narrow it down from the source.
1. Where did you get your "Install OS X Yosemite" app from?
2. Have you tried getting the app from different sources?
3. Have you tried using different media to install it and to install on to?
4. Have you tried installing and booting with nothing but the essentials plugged? Plug your mouse directly into the Mac Pro and unplug the hub in the monitor. Remove all other HDDs.

I had downloaded from kickass.to, many people claims to work with their machines, I have no other option here in Ecuador I have to use torrents because the lack of access to a supported computer for Yosemite. I had removed all the hard drives, used another drive for the installation but no luck yet, sorry for the inconveniences that I might cause, I greatly appreciate your time and help.

It's no inconvenience, just trying to figure out what's causing the kp. The installer boots and installs without issue?
