2006/2007 Mac Pro (1,1/2,1) and OS X Yosemite

First of thanks to Hennessie for the upgrade instructions. I'm not a IT person by any stretch of the imagination, but nonetheless I found them to be quite understandable and easy to follow. I am hoping for some help with a relatively minor but annoying problem:

Before upgrading I bought a Radeon 5770 video card that was supposed to be flashed for Mac. However, I get no apple logo when booting after upgrading to Yosemite. Perhaps associated with this when holding down the option (alt) key while booting I cannot see the screen listing the boot options. I got around this by trial and error, pressing the right arrow on successive reboot attempts until the machine booted from the thumb drive. All went smoothly after that. Is my video card not actually flashed for Mac as advertised or could something have gone wrong with the install?

Just to be sure:

After upgrading I noticed the addition of 2 steps, 14 & 15, to Hennessie's instructions under Creating the Yosemite thumb driver installer. These steps unlock and lock boot.efi. I'm assuming these weren't needed in my case since the upgrade worked. If that's a wrong assumption, please let me know.

Finally:

I would like to install tobyg's script make sure the correct boot.efi file is there for future upgrades. Will the fact that the boot.efi in the CoreServices directory is locked be a problem, and if so what's a safe work around?

Thanks!

Tobyg's script works fine but follow the instructions in post 1584 (I think that's the right post).

The locking and unlocking steps have always been in the guide as it is the only way to replace the Core Services boot.efi (unless you are logged in as a root user. I added some steps about the quotes which might have changed the numbering of the steps.

So I completed the install. Just before I managed to reflash a XFX R7950 DD videocard to Mac EFI and used the beta SFOTT to install Yosemite. All went fine. But I tried to repair permissions and reset PRAM and rebooting hangs halfway. I did a full reinstall to determine is the permissions or the resetting of the PRAM was the issue. After the reinstall I reset the PRAM and the reboot hangs again. I rebooted in verbose and the system hangs on:

IOgraphics flags 0×43
Previous shutdown cause 3
ApplePC:: start – Could not find IOPlatformPlugin driver

As advised in SFOTT I changed the videocard for the original 7300, but with the same effect. System hangs.

Without reseting the PRAM everything is working as it should, but after a reset be aware that this can occur. So a good backup is advised when resetting.
(I opened this thread on request of oem from oemen.com)

Same thing happened to me today. Had Yosemite and my new GTX 970 all happy, tried to zap pram to fix no blue tooth and then got a hang on boot.

Anyone else running an Xserve?

For some odd reason, when I installed Yosemite on my 1,1 Xserve, OS X only sees one drive bay instead of 3. It's not in System Profiler or DPCIManager.

Just did the 10.10.1 update directly via the App Store.

Reboot took slightly longer, but no issues getting back in.

Flashing?

If you have access to another Mac that is Yosemite "legit" get ahold of an SSD or any 2.5" drive and a $5 USB adapter. Run the install on the other Mac, then migrate anything you need from that Mac. Restart from other drive on the other Mac and place the boot.efi files, repair permissions and YOU ARE DONE.

Move the drive to unsupported Mac and enjoy! If you want or need it on 3.5" drive use Restore.

It really is a whole lot easier than hacking the installer. I have 2 unsupported Macs running via this method. Worked the first time and I moved on to other things. If it has become a major endeavor you are doing it wrong.

Hello MacVidCards
Would you mind explaining the concept of flashing? Everyone seems to know what it is. Except me. But perhaps some others too...

Thx

Been up and running on Yosemite without issue for a while now but my last roller ball apple mouse finally got too frustrating to use anymore (been through 4 so far) and though I prefer a wired mouse, Apple doesn't offer their magic mouse in anything but wireless.

So, I purchased the BT Magic Mouse only to find that it's choppy, doesn't respond really well when working, and is a complete pain with Yosemite. Read a bunch of threads with people complaining of BT issues but saw a few devs state that with the beta of 10.10.1 all those issues were resolved. Well, Apple released 10.10.1 today and guess what? Still have the same bad performance.

I've gone through the unloading/loading of the BT kext to no avail (though it did at least get the computer to recognize the mouse so I could pair it up). Repaired permissions, repaired the disk, etc. Nothing changes.

Am I screwed when running a Mac Pro 1,1 with Yosemite and a BT Magic Mouse? Really need to get this resolved if at all possible.

Ditto here, i.e. updated flawlessly to 10.10.1 from the AppStore on my Mac Pro 2006 2,1 with a MAC ATI HD 5870 video card. No problems whatsoever and all working good.

Many thanks to Hennesie2000 and all others involved in making this happen, very much appreciated.

:) Long live my original Mac Pro 2006 !!

Hey there,

I was having the same problem with the Magic Mouse as you appear to be having. I got over the problem by buying a USB BT Dongle, which I plugged in to the right hand USB port of my apple keyboard. It worked a treat under Mavericks, but there was an issue on 10.10 with it recognising the dongle until I had logged in and then sometimes not even then.

This was fixed by turning off the BT in the menu bar, unplugging the dongle turning BT back on and then plugging the dongle back in.

This problem seems to have been fixed in 10.10.1, in the few times I've rebooted the dongle has been recognised right away and the mouse works as it should.

Hope this helps. Here's the link on Amazon

I used a wired Mighty Mouse for years, and a couple of years back after it died I picked up a BT Magic Mouse, my first BT mouse.
I never had great BT range (or wi-fi signal strength for that matter) with my 2006 1,1 from day one.
It never really bothered me much until I got the Magic Mouse, then the stuttering and jerkiness drove me crazy.

Then I ran across this :
http://www.thelocale.org/files/howtos/mac-pro-bluetooth-howto.pdf

It turns out that a lot of the original Mac Pro 1,1s may have had their antennas wired improperly from the factory.

I followed this procedure, and not only did the mouse pointer stuttering stop, but my wi-fi signal strength improved too.
I ran for six or seven years and never noticed a problem until I went to a BT mouse.

Now I'm not saying this is your problem too, but it's easy enough to swap the antenna leads around, and it's easily reversible if it makes no improvement for you. Just be very careful, and go easy with those tiny coax connectors.

Here's some more info :

Hopefully this helps.

I also have a bluetooth dongle, and sometimes I find certain USB devices can affect the performance of the Magic Mouse when in operation. (Card Reader and my HD tuner/EyeTV)

My biggest revelation that I only discovered recently, was there is a sweet spot for the Apple Wifi card on my 2006 Mac Pro. I had to orient the tower so that the non-removable door side of the tower faced the direction of my Airport Express. I used http://www.speedtest.net to do my checks and it went from 5-7mbps to 19mbps.

Thank you trickbox and The Bug.

I tried swapping the antennas and the scrolling is a little smoother, however it gets choppy whenever the hard drive is working. Love MagicPrefs. Thanks for the heads up on that one. Tapping for a right click is wonderful.

Going to see how this goes for a bit and perhaps I'll look into the external USB BT adapter as well. Just not sure if it's the antenna, Yosemite (which this issue seems to be reported in quite a bit), or the old computer with the SATA drive.

*Update:
It seems that before any apps are running things are nice and smooth. When I have all my apps open and I'm working it gets worse and worse. Almost seems like a video memory issue or something to do with resources being used.

This is all I was looking for. Open up Activity Monitor and see whats going on. I don't know how many apps you have open but You could be running low on ram and it is having to resort to swap files which are much slower.
