Mac Pro 2,1 Yosemite Failed Install "Unable to find driver for this platform"

Hey Guys,

I followed Hennesie2000's guide for Yosemite install but upon boot, with the black apple logo up, i received the following error: (see screenshot as well)

"unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI\",\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2782.1.97/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1590

....... etc

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 with a NVIDIA 8800 GT successfully running a patched Mavericks install. Please help with any ideas of what is needed to get by this error.

Little Snitch 3.5 and early Mac Pros running Yosemite

Has anyone successfully installed Little Snitch 3.5 on an early Mac Pro running Yosemite? Several users have mentioned serious difficulties at the obdev.at forums, but I'm not sure whether the problem is solely related to unsupported machines or has a more widespread nature. In case you have another Mac computer, can any of you comment whether you installed Little Snitch 3.5 successfully, say, on an iMac, but unsuccessfully on a Mac Pro 1,1 or 2,1?

In case any of you succeeded in installing Little Snitch 3.5 on an early Mac Pro running Yosemite 10.10 or 10.10.1, can you explain if you followed any roundabout procedures?

Hey guys... I've installed Yosemite the day after it was released, so my boot.efi was the one built around late september or something iirc. Should I be worried that it was not the latest version when I upgraded to 10.10 before updating to 10.10.1? My guess is "no" but I'm still asking just in case... :)

(and btw do I need to replace it with the lastest boot.efi?)

No, boot.efi is pretty much "works or doesn't." If your computer is booting the current boot.efi is all you need. Also, you can update to 10.10.1 right from the Mac App store, it doesn't replace the boot.efi (though future versions may or may not).

This is all I was looking for. Open up Activity Monitor and see whats going on. I don't know how many apps you have open but You could be running low on ram and it is having to resort to swap files which are much slower.

Sorry about that. Better to provide too much detail I suppose.

I've already been watching the system processes and I am not moving into swap (2gb still unused), 90%+ processor free, etc. The system is definitely not being overtaxed.

Here are the apps that are running:
Apple Mail
Firefox
Address Book
Calendar
iTunes
TextEdit
Terminal
Messages

*Update:
What I haven't done is reset the PRAM or the SMC. Those are two things that apparently should be tried in this situation but, since it's a hack getting Yosemite working on this machine, I didn't know if those things would prove to be an issue.

since I'm in the process of creating a new 10.10.1 installer USB stick, I'm doing fresh installs of 10.10.1 on a MacPro2,1 all day long... I just installed LS 3.5 onto an untouched fresh Yosemite. the system booted but LS wouldn't start (complaining something about LS's KEXT not able to load).

EDIT: now the Mac won't do a clean restart/shutdown anymore.

Try with kext-dev-mode=1

nope, this doesn't help either. also the machine starts painfully slow and I'm still unable to do a clean shutdown/restart. format the disk, reinstall Yosemite 10.10.1  luckily this is a system I'm only using for tests anyway.

Thanks for the input. You might want to try if Onyx can delete the boot cache and then restart. Maybe that will fix the issue. If not, reinstalling LS using Safe Mode might help.

Interesting note:

When I try and manually unload the BT kext I get this message;

(kernel) Kext com.apple.iokit.BroadcomBluetoothHostControllerUSBTransport not found for unload request.
Failed to unload com.apple.iokit.BroadcomBluetoothHostControllerUSBTransport - (libkern/kext) not found

I can then load it just fine and then unload/reload without issue but after a while when things get really choppy and unstable, I receive the same error when I try to unload/load it again.

I updated the LS and after that it would not work (you can login but then it stuck).
Start in Fail Safe mode and download the LS and install it again.
Reboot again in Fail Safe and clean the cashes (including boot cash) with e.g. Onyx.
Then restart in normal, now it works.

Well... bad news. I got my new PSU and after installed still nothing. Not even the trickle LED. I am guessing it is the board at this point :(. Guess I must have shorted something out when swapping the GPU.

Something very interesting I am noticing while looking at new boards on Ebay is that they all have a small plastic shield over the board just behind the PCIe slots. My board does not have that and I think I touched something there or mis-installed one of the slot covers and it was touching something when I tried to power up and shorted out the board. The cover that I am seeing on the new boards is most likely there to prevent touching the circuitry on the board behind the PCIe slots.

Same thing happened to me today. Had Yosemite and my new GTX 970 all happy, tried to zap pram to fix no blue tooth and then got a hang on boot.

You have a GTX970 in a Mac Pro 1,1? This is beyond overkill as the PCI bandwidth is much lower than the card's specifications call for.

Only if you are using it for computation, if you are using it for gaming then there isn't much of a difference between PCIe 1.0 x16 and PCIe 3.0 x16 as far as frame rates.

Good to know. I have been pondering a potential future update to my non-Apple 5770. I like that the 750 Ti is only slot powered, but wouldn't want to buy an upgrade that doesn't actually produce better gaming output.

Hi Guys,

I've done some searching but not come up with anything conclusive. Can someone tell me if this 802.11ac wireless card will fit into my Mac Pro 1,1?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Broadcom-BC...TF8&qid=1416337578&sr=1-1&keywords=BCM94360CD

I already have the airport card installed, but am looking to take advantage of handoff etc.

Am I right in thinking i can install this in the same slot as the original airport card, and won't need a PCI-E adapter on my MP 1,1.

Cheers,

Tom

This didn't work for me. Updated to Little Snitch v3.5 on all my other supported/unsupported Macs including a 2006 iMac running OS X 10.8.5 booting w/ Tiamo's boot.efi & a Hackintosh booting OS X 10.10.1 with Clover and had no issues whatsoever.

I received several stalled boots trying "texans" suggestion before OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 finally booted on my Mac Pro though with a yellow triangle w/ an exclamation point in the middle of it on the right hand side of "Finder" alerting me that the Little Snitch installation was damaged. I have since gone back to v3.4.2 and won't be fooling with it until an updated version will simply install normally.

Here is what I posted over there on the obdev forums.
I was able to install 3.5 right over the previous version, when I installed using these extra steps, maybe overkill but it worked like a champ for me
Hope this helps.

Edit: I almost forgot your other question.
Yes, it does seem like some folks with supported machines were hit with this problem too, not just us brave unsupported folks. :)

There does indeed seem to be a problem with the LS 3.5 installer corrupting something in the boot cache.
First off, I'm running Yosemite on an unsupported MacPro 1,1 which I've flashed the SMC and firmware to a 2,1, so I'm in uncharted territory to begin with :) .

I tried 3 times to install 3.5 unsuccessfully, once using the internal (Sparkle if I'm not mistaken) updater and twice with the stand alone update.

I finally got 3.5 to install by doing the following :
1- Boot into safe mode by holding down the shift key after the startup chime.
2- run the Little Snitch standalone updater from the Objective website
3- reboot into safe mode with the shift key again
4- use Onyx (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx) or a similar utility to rebuild all the caches (including the boot cache)
5- reboot normally and enjoy LS 3.5 :)

Hopefully this helps.
