Hi,
I would like to ask how to update my mac to Yosemite.
I have read several guides and I did not find solution for macbook pro 2,1.
OS X Yosemite Beta on Unsupported Macs is probably the best thread, but realistically I think it's going to suck on that laptop because of the graphics card being unsupported, along with other aspects in the hardware like backlighting, sleep and audio. Some people in that thread are trying to cobble together some deeply hacked solutions with old modified 32-bit kernels and kernel extensions on Yosemite or 64-bit developer preview Mountain Lion graphics kernel extensions. To me it sounds like a bag of hurt far worse than a "Hackintosh" when I read it.

The reason it's possible on a 2006/2007 Mac Pro is that they can be easily upgraded to Yosemite-supported graphics cards (for example, the AMD R9 280X is a faster clock version of the GPU used in the Yosemite-supported AMD FirePro D700), Yosemite still ships with the 2006/2007 Mac Pro expansion slot utility so you can configure the PCIe card slots with full OS X support, and the rest of the hardware is similar enough to the Yosemite-supported 2008-2012 Mac Pros that everything else "just works" without any hacking needed at all. Basically, all that is needed for Yosemite compatibility for a 2006/2007 Mac Pro is (1) a new boot loader and (2) a new graphics card.

HUGE thanks to all that made it happen.

Donated earlier this weekend and suggest those who've put this to use on their 1,1 or 2,1 to donate wherever possible.

Massive thank you to Tiamo for getting the ball rolling on this.

:D

Thank You for quick response.
In this case I need to change my macbook.
There is a bunch of applications which unfortunatly are not supported by OS X Lion.

Have a good day,

Install on 2,1 Mac Pro almost too easy!

Sorry guys but I cant transfer or download Yosemite from Copy.com

"You’ve found a page that doesn’t exist!

But don’t fret... here’s a page that does."

and send me to the main page
I had this happen to me too when I tried the link. I set up a copy.com account and got the same message, but then I noticed a progress bar under the Copy apps menu icon... and sure enough it was downloading.

That link to the installer I posted is already modified. You do not need to use SFOTT with it. Just restore the image to your USB drive and boot.
I just wanted to thank you for creating this installer. It worked seamlessly with my 2,1 Mac Pro, my computer found the boot drive (where I copied the installer) right away and went to work. It booted right up into Yosemite and after a weekend of testing so far so good.

GT210 & Nvidia Web Driver on 2006 & 2007 cMP running Yosemite

Hello!

Huge thanks again to everyone on this thread for the solid and savvy info.

I'm running a 2006 1,1 -> 2,1 and have OS X 10.10.1 running great. I have access to 2008 and 2009 cMP models, so used the method of installing 10.10 on a supported machine and swapping the two boot.efi files before putting the boot drive into my 2006 cMP.

Current GPU in the 2006 is the 2600XT. It does the job, but I'd like to install an XFX GT 210 (already in my possession) with the goal of enabling FCPX to be installed on the 2006 cMP.

However, after installing the GT 210 into slot 1, the GPU is not recognized under 10.10.1 on the 2006 cMP at all - no video signal, nor any recognition in System Information that there is even a GT210 installed at all.

The GT210 is in Slot 1 ont he bottom, and the 2600XT in Slot 4 on the top - no other PCIe cards installed in slots 2 or 3.

System Information doesn't see the GT210 in either Graphics/Display or the PCI section. There is not even the usual "error while gathering PCIe information," it only sees the 2600 XT.

At first I assumed I had merely installed the GT210 Graphics Card incorrectly, so I've triple checked that it is housed properly in Slot 1; at one point even replacing the 2600XT into Slot 1 for a quick reboot to ensure that Slot 1 is working - all checks out.

I then tested the XFX GT210 in a 2009 cMP and it worked great - what's more it did not require the Nvidia web driver - the 10.10.1 native drivers worked great.

To my novice understanding, this seems to be a function of Yosemite software running on the "unsupported" 2006 and 2007 cMP hardware.

I then attempted to install the most recent Nvidia Web Driver, which returns an installation error (two screenshots attached - driver download to show version as well as a screenshot of the installation error message).

Nvidia clearly states on the driver download page that:
"This driver update is for Mac Pro 5,1 (2010), Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) and Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) users only."

However, I'm curious to learn if anyone has been able to install the most recent Nvidia Web Driver on a 2006 or 2007 cMP. (Driver version is 343.01.02).

May thanks in advance for any help or insight here!

They say it is only for those Macs because that is what they support. The drivers however work fine in an older Mac Pro. I always used them with my GTX 570.

Thanks much Hennesie,

I totally agree and want to use those drivers. Sorry I failed to attach the error screenshots in my previous post, which has just been fixed. I cannot seem to install the Nvidia Web Driver on my 2006 cMP. Please see the attached files in my post above (#2032).

Any ideas?

SOLVED!

One configuration I had not tested in the 2006 cMP was the GT210 without the 2600XT installed. As soon as the GT210 was the only card installed everything loads, card is recognized, FCPX installing, using the default OS X drivers. Sorry for any confusion this question might have caused.

Lastly, some bright folks have modded the Nvidia Web Driver should anyone want it:

A little understood bonus to the web drivers is that they overlook the System ID check if you already have a PC Nvidia GPU running via OS X drivers.

So, for anything other than a Maxwell card or Titan Black or 780Ti, no need for modded versions of the drivers.

Strange Error

First of all thanks to all guy's involved to this....

maybe someone's got a clue what i'm doing wrong, or what's wrong ;-)

MacPro 1,1, Geforce GTX560ti, 16GB RAM, 1SSD in Bay 1 Running OS 10.9, empty HDD for 10.10 in bay2

now after 3 different Stick's i always end up in the first setup menu (see pic),
i can move the mouse, switch the blue frame of the back or forward button, but no reaction same at the menus, i used the boot.efi from 3rd november, after a pram reset, i can choose the language at the setup, and then again, i end up at the same point. Someone's got a clue? (kernels is not missing, Board-ID is in, i really don't get it....)

Thanks in advance for a hint.

Oh man, i found the solution, it was my old logitech Keyboard/Mouse, but it's an Mac edition from 2005, seems it just works with the new apple keyboard, so sorry to border all for this, but maybe someone's out there with the same problem, right now it's installing with the new original mouse & key from apple....

USB issues

I have successful installed Yosemite using the SFOTT method a month ago on my Mac Pro 1,1 and almost everything works fine. Thanks to all those involved in these projects to keep functional hardware like this running.

I Still do not have any of USB ports fully recognized. When booted into Lion or Windows 8.1 they work find, but in Yosemite they are no longer plug and play. Some peripherals plunged in at start up and boot are recognized i.e. keyboard and mouse, and anything plunged in after getting into the system will not be recognized, or listed in system report under USB.

I have looked on this thread and at other forums, and have seen similar problems related to may different kinds of Macs, but have not seen any solutions to address the problem. I figured I would try here first to see if anyone else has this same problem, and to see if it may be part of the install.

I know that I may have to reinstall Yosemite, but with the pain in the tookus that it was to get it installed and running, I would like to see if there are other fixes first.

Hello,

After updating my mac pro 2,1 to Yosemite, I'd been experiencing several issues with my computer, whenever I watch flash content from any website, the computer shuts down and restarts twice and then goes back to normal, at the begging I though an overheating processor was the problem, temperature was 27C at the moment when the machine had the issue, maybe, the Nvidia 8800GT is the issue, I had purchased another ram kit but still, I have the same problem, any advise please?.

Thanks.

I do not have this problem. Are there any hubs or USB PCIe cards involved?

No, though I do get plug and play from my old Apple Key board's USB port, but I assume that is the keyboard being recognized, and this cannot be recreated on any of the other empty ports when in Yosemite.

I have heard about issues with 3.0 PCIe cards not working right, but my problem has been the built in 2.0, and 2.0 with the some devices that work find on my 2011 MacBook Air.

Do you have the Nvidia Web drivers installed? This is a long shot but on my new hackintosh the Apple USB mouse and keyboard don't work after it wakes up from sleep and it started after I installed the web drivers.

Never-mind. The issues I was having was caused by over-clocking the CPU using the Overlock Genie button on the mobo.

You may have memory issues similar to what I've been having on my 1,1 which I flashed to a 2,1 with Yosemite.
My spontaneous rebooting issues first showed up when streaming Netflix with Silverlight in Safari.
I'd be curious to see, if you've tried running memtest, and got spontaneous reboots there too.
I used this :
https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15837/rember
It's just a GUI for the command line memtest.
I couldn't make it all the way through without rebooting until I removed some memory.

That is a hub, actually, although I can't explain the behavior. I have no USB issues at all, my only hub is a 30" ACD.

I followed Hennesie2000 guide and gone through it several times. But I get the USB to boot and when it comes to the first screen it says "It can't install OS X on this computer" Then below that is a button to restart. I have made sure the quote marks are not italicized, all the syntax is correct. I have switched from the black boot.efi to the grey boot.efi it all ends up the same.

My machine is a 1,1
Mavericks 10.9.5
Upgraded Dual X5535's
Samsung 840EVO 250gb (Boot)
Apple ATi HD5770 (Main card)
Flashed PC ATi HD5770

Could it be that I need to flash to a 2,1?

I'm getting exactly the same issue as this. Followed all the instructions here to a T. The installer runs and gets to about 15 min remaining and then stops with the error message: An error occurred while extracting files from the package "BaseSystemResource.pkg". Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.

I've tried recreating the Flash Drive twice with two different keys, both times going through all the steps carefully. Same problem with both install drives. I also have an HD 5770 installed although unflashed. Display seems to come up ok sans boot screen for the installer so I dont think thats the issue.

Was there a fix found for this issue? Right now Im trying to download the pre-modded image but it's taking forever to DL. Not sure what else I should look at. Points in the right direction are greatly appreciated!

That is not the same issue that they were having. Sounds like you have a corrupted installer.

Also, if only I had a dollar for every time someone said they "followed it to a T".

Thanks for the quick response. Yep, I know I'm a newb on this forum, but not a newb in general. But, I'll try to rebuild it a third time. Step by step. I'll report back. Thanks!
