It works only if I delete the profile using terminal and entering:

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -p

Any clue?

Hello there,

The GTX 570 is a non flashed PC card, I am using a Apple 23-inch (1920 x 1200) Cinema Display on one of the DVI ports, I had tried both but with no signal, other users had reported no issues using the same card, I had followed all the instructions but no luck.

The GTX 570 I was using was the 1.25GB version. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Hello,

On this video this person installs the EVGA GTX 570HD on a Mac Pro 1,1 but he doesn't specify if he uses the 2.5GB or the 1.2GB version.

Yesterday, I was able to download OSX Installer on a newer mac, then made a copy and placed it on my Mac Pro 1,1, running on Lion. I was able to use SFOTT software, created a USB bootable drive. Then I tried to install Yosemite from the USB drive (boot with option key), to my surprise, I kept getting a black screen with the apple logo and the dreaded flashing "?" sign. I then tried to go back to the HD that has Lion, same issue, black screen, apple logo with flashing "?" sign.

Anyone knows what the issue is? How can I solve it? I know I lost the HD drive that has Lion, but I di have a backup drive with Lion; I can superduper HD with Lion again.

Thanks in advance.

are you using a firmware password? or have you file vaulted your main partition?

this happened to me when I tried to use an older OS that didn't know how to unlock/mount the main drive since the (I assume) protocol was different. I solved it by using the recovery system to unlock the drive and it all worked fine since.

First of all thanks for taking the time and addressing my issues.

I am not familiar with what you mentioned, firmware password etc. I am willing to try your solution; how can I use the recovery system to unlock the drive?

I remember last year when I installed Maverick, it didn't work with a flash drive, I had to use a seagate external portable drive. Do you think the issue is the usb flash drive?

oh my bad. yeah the 1,1 does not allow boot from USB - firewire only (or maybe ethernet also - not sure)

but unless you erased your lion you should still have access to it - unless like I say, the drive has become locked.

boot into your recovery partition (use cmd+r) and then go to disk utility and find your lion drive - then click and it check the icons along the top of the disk utility window - it will have something like unlock or mount. whatever it says, you want to mount your hd. then quit out of Disk Utility, and select startup disk - and you should see your lion install.

So I guess I gotta go back and prep a new key, now on an external seagate drive and see what unfolds.

Also, I tried shift key to enter safe mode with the prepped osx yosemite bootable flash drive in, no way, it wont enter safe mode. Even after I remove the flash drive, no safe mode. I am superduping the hard drive again with Lion and will try a new key.

Too late now, I have already started cloning the original lion drive into this scratch drive. I will keep in mind your recommendation and execute them in case I stumble again on the same issues. I can't rest until I climb Yosemite all the way to the top, right?

you don't have to scratch your right ear with your left hand ;)

You are right, Lion was still there when I executed superduper. I did not know the issue might be a silly lock. I also checked the flash drive, the yosemite key is still there.

You are right, but my knowledge in OSX is very limited. So I will try anything to make this work....

ok - but you need to boot off firewire or ethernet on the 1,1. Or install it on an internal drive - usb won;t do.

USB booting works fine on a Mac Pro 1,1.
The only time USB doesn't work is if you want to boot an OS using the BIOS emulation e.g. a Windows installer.

I've had a couple of memory sticks which haven't worked with Yosemite (worked fine with other versions). Apart from that, USB is how I've installed pretty much all the OS's onto my 1,1 including Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite. They've also worked fine for unlocking FileVault2 encrypted disks and for accessing DIY Fusion Drives.

News to me.

Any clue why Firefox is crashing the dock on my system?

The Mac Pro 1,1 does allow booting from as USB drive. Just done it to install Yosemite on my Mac Pro 1,1. Just followed the guide and (rather surprisingly for me) it worked first time. Indeed I'm writing this on my 1,1 with Yosemite now.

Yes. Established already as above.

OK. So I followed your advice, created a seagate external bootable drive with latest Yosemite (downloaded just yesterday from app store) and latest SFOTT utility, and firewire connection. Everything worked fine and I have now Yosemite installed over Lion. Everything works, but I lost parallel, lil snitch and flipformac, perhaps I lost other things, I will check later.

Thanks to everyone who made this happen, and long life to our beloved Mac Pro 1,1, the best computer in the history of puters.

Here is a pic of the lil baby, what a cutie, born with ACS, acute cuteness syndrome :)

In case anyone was wondering, you CANNOT restore a Yosemite Time Machine backup to a 1,1 Mac Pro with an OS X Lion disc. Also, Migration Assistant is bugging out for me - says I don't have enough space to restore the Time Machine backup, but the new disk is even bigger than the entire TM disk! I've resorted to copying manually. Sigh. Guess I should invest in a new CCC license.

EDIT:

Can't restore from time machine at all. Going to recreate the Recovery HD later tonight as described in the guide, maybe that will fix.

Can't Download SFOTT

For the last 3 days I have been trying to download SFOTT_install.dmg V1.4.4 and have failed to accomplish this. All browsers on all machines I have access to seem to stall during the connect to web site phase, Does anyone know why this is happening or how I can get around this issue?

2.5GB over here

Im running the non flashed EVGA GTX570 2.5GB on my end. Been up and running on 10.10.1. I run the card slot 1(slot next to memory cage) and have been running up 3 weeks without any issues. I have 2 monitors both via the DVI cables from the video card, 1 is 20" apple display and another is an 24" Acer. Remember that this card uses 2 power cables to power the card.
