New Software Update a Problem?

Hi, I just installed the new update 10.6.8, and I think it just messed up the graphic drivers for my 6870 cards. Has anyone else had this problem? If so let me know what the solution is and on that note can I get some quick advice on how to uninstall an apple update like this one?

You cant uninstall updates, you have to reinstall SL and update your way back.

Ok well that is good to know. Thanks. I'm currently in the process of reinstalling the graphic drivers in this forum. I'm using the good old 4870 to do this. I'll let people know if this works when I shut down and restart with the 6870s back in the tower.

Did Not Work :(

Ok, simply reinstalling the driver did not work. I'll wait a bit and see if anybody else has problems, otherwise it looks like I'm reinstalling SL. :(

Have you guys solve the no boot screen issue?, I suppose that flashing the card does the job, right?, and... is that flash rom/firmware file uploaded at the forum?

Well as of now, there isn't any modified firmware that can be flashed to a 6870, the pieces that are needed are just not available. At least that is how I understand it. However, if you visit this link: http://www.groths.org/?p=356, you will see that cindori is working on a new version of Zeus that will help with this problem. So yes, the boot screen is still an issue, and yes, when we finally do flash the ROM this should do the job, but that hasn't happened yet.

On a separate matter. Anyone wanting to know, the 10.6.8 update does in someway affect the drivers for the 6870 cards. I suggest not updating to it. I just spent all night reinstalling SL, and reinstalling back to 10.6.7. So I guess I'll wait for further news on a fix for this.:apple:

Ok thanks, I'll keep an eye on this.

My Sapphire 6870 works in Lion out of the box in my early 2009 MP. Steam games & starcraft II work fine but I haven't tested DVD player yet.

Well, Lion installed fine, even though it gave me some trouble. I have a RAID setup and it fought a little with to get that going. Anyway, good news is that Lion works just fine. However, it seems that it has disabled the second DVI port on my 6870 so I only have two displays right now.

I don't suppose anyone knows a fix or if there is a small graphics update that will cure this? In the mean time I'm going to try and figure this out.

Can someone confirm that it works fine with 2 monitors? I have a 4870 that came with my mac pro and the monitor in the mini port looks way sharper than the one in dvi. Yes the monitors are new and if I switch them, the dvi out still looks messed up. So im looking to upgrade to a 6870 hoping to fix this.
Also any difference in brands? Which is the one to get?

-Thanks

Yes the 6870 will definitely work with two displays. I'm running up to three 24" displays now. I have even seen 4 work.

Well the difference in brands comes down to what you want to pay and what you want to do with it. Sapphire is great. I have two XFX black edition 6870s. I did that because I do a lot of high end gaming in Windows, but if your just sticking to OS X, then I wouldn't go overboard.

How do you have the monitors connected? Can I use the 2 mini ports? Also I went to the website of the drivers and the post there states it does not work with more than 1 monitor...

-Thanks

Hello,

Well the difference in brands comes down to what you want to pay and what you want to do with it.

Thinking about GPUs is new to me, and I'm pretty curious about what could make different "flavors" of 6870 have significant differences: the specs all seem identical. What should I look for when buying a 6870?

Thanks

I run 3 displays concurrently on the Sapphire card:

DVI 1 -> 30" Dell 3007wfp-HC
MDP 1 -> Apple MDP/DVI DL Adapter - 30" Dell 3007wfp-HC
HDMI -> Westinghouse 37w3 1080P 37" LCD

No issues except for loosing sync on the DVI connection and getting a fuzzy display. This has been going on forever just an apple driver thingy.

Hello,

Look for a reference card...

That's not how I meant the question. I found a review of 5 different 6870 cards including the Toxic that is supposed to be "faster" than others. The most significant improvement was nearly 5%. That was going from 41 fps to 43 fps.

Big effing wow.

Why bother with these "special" cards?

As far as I know, all the ports work. I'm not 100% sure. You may want to read up on that a little. However I'm using the mdp, and the two DVIs. Works just fine for me.
