Yes can someone explain how to set the framebuffer? I have a sneaking suspicion I can no longer run python because of the new cards. How is this done?

I do not have all the info, but following the threads on InsanelyMac forums:
How to get the card working
1. ATI_updated_driversMBP.zip for the drivers
2. install the OpenGL Framework too
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=250804&st=40&p=1655159&#entry1655159
3. Set the framebuffer:

or the link above?
What you need is the customized ATI Package.pkg.zip provided, if I remember right, by "Andy". Sorry I can't provide a direct link, but it is there somewhere.
use GraphicsEnabler=y
and someone said;
use AtiConfig=Elodea, for the framebuffer. (if that doesn't work try duckweed)

Hi Guy,
Bought myself an card today:
Sapphire HD6870 1G GDDR5 PCI-E DL-DVI-I+SL-D/HDMI/DP
PS:299-3E174-020SA
SKU:11179-09-20G

I can confirm this card working on two DVI connectors to my dual 23" cinema displays on a macpro 2,1 8core.
Black startup screen as known.

Ok, I mostly got confused by that. It seemed like it was more for hackintoshes. I think I'll just leave it be, until it is more clear to me. I don't want to mess up a good thing right now.

Andy has specifically stated that those are for hackintoshes and not real macs.

So I got everything up and running, but I must say that things look a little funny when using OSX. Everything looks a little "soft". It's hard to quantify, but there is definitely a change in how crisp the screen image and fonts look. Anybody had this problem, or read about it?

So is this to say that Steam games work under that configuration?

How about SC2?

It would be far more logical to ask on that thread, wouldn't it?

In any case, "specifying the frame buffer" is the part that is done on hacks and not Macs, so to answer your question for the MP, no.

Hey everyone,

I´m also interested in buying a Radeon HD 6870.
But I ´ve several questions:
1. Which manufacturer should i buy? XFX or Sapphire or ...
2. If i buy the XFX-version, is the black edition with dual fan 20€ more worth?
3. How is the performance(-loss), when I use the Radeon HD 6870 for my 27" ACD and my GT120 for a second little monitor.

sincerly yours
fabian

None. Running two cards will not degrade performance. Actually, if your second display is on another card, it'll actually improve performance.

It doesn't really matter who you buy from. There all third party and some are better than others. Just check out reviews on the sites that sell them like newegg.com or tigerdirect.com. Knowledge is power.

As for the XFX Black edition, I got the dual fan solution because I read that the reference card (single fan) ran a bit hot, although they said it was normal. However if you have any plans of over-clocking it further than the factory over-clock, then trust me, your gonna need a cooler solution.
I also read that the dual fans are quieter because they can run at lower RPM and keep the card cooler than the reference solution.

On a seperate matter, I suppose no one knows how to correct any of the problems with the applications that are affected by the new cards? Just curious.

Hey,
thanks for the fast replies.
But what´s about the HD6970.
I´ve recently read, that this card is supported by the Apple drivers and the 2GB will be amazing.

What´s your thinking to this?
Is the HD6970 a better buy than the HD6870 Dual Fan?

ffder1.

Everything I've read is that the 6970 doesn't work. Maybe you mean the 6970M, which is a mobility card not suitable for a Mac Pro.

Hey,
thanks for the fast replies.
ok I´ve bought a XFX HD6870 Black Edition, installed it and everything works just fine :D

Only the boot-up-screen- and the DVD-problem are there ....

Most DVDs I can watch via VLC or MPlayerX, but some (old) DVDs are still not playable. Are their any alternative to the original DVD Player, that support all DVDs?

Today I´ve discovered problems with LaraCroft.
It always crash, before the game should start (after the main menu).

Has anyone else the same problem?

Hi, is great to know it work !!! for the logo screen... if I stay with the old gt120 and the ati 6870, will I see it? would be nice if you can check it user "handheldgames" ...
Also, anyone have tried it with the Lion beta???

Best regards.:apple::apple::apple:

Hey,
it´s me again :)
Is it possible to display the GPU-temperature of the Hd6870 under OSX?
I´ve tried iStat and Hardwaremonitor, but i didn´t find any sensor of the gpu?

Is there a trick?

Simply put no, not in OS X, or at least one that I'm not aware of. What you get from iStats in the Dashboard is all I know of.
