Lost in Space:

For some days @jborko and me tried to get a WX7100 running in two different mid 2011 27" models in two different European countries checking out all the available VBIOS options.

I simply not wanted to start up in a 2011 model. Fans turned spinning for a split second and that was it.

Surprisingly I got the card slowly (core frequency was locked on 300 MHz) running in one late 2009 27" system the latest version of Catalina 10.15.4. Since it was not my mission to check this card out on the 2009 I did no further tests with different operating system versions and different VBIOS options there.

If somebody is interested to get this card for a 2009/2010 system @jborko will happily answer. Otherwise the card will be returned to China.

Two pictures of the card will be added, device ID was ????, the serial is 109-C95847-00C-02.

Wish I could have better news.

There has been recently some confusion about the identification of this product. @Nick [D]vB has obviously a card with number 109-C95847-00C_02, user @Pascal Baillargeau has a card running with number 109-C769A1-00B-xx, user @jborko failed checking a card with number 109-C95847-00C_02 , user @JoeOIVOV failed checking a card and this ID 109-C95847-00D.
Check the online offers carefully.

I have a WX7100 with the same serial 109-C95847-00C_02, is this to say ultimately that it will not work in 2011 27" iMac? Or would it be worth a try in your opinion?

Currently I believe it is the only real WX7100. Unless you got a damaged card it should run. I keep all my fingers crossed.

General Questions (Last Updated 05/05/2020)
...

5. Target Display Mode is available on the K1100M, K2100M, WX4170, and WX7100 when using both custom VBIOS and OpenCore. Target Display Mode is *only* stable under High Sierra and should not be used in later OS's.

...
...

Hello guys, first of all huge thanks to the devs for this amaizing mod !!! 😃😃😃😃😃😃

My question is Target Display Mode (TDM) related.
I am very interrested in that feature since it is neat to have that huge screen + sound and a backup mac.
I use TDM with my main windows computer and switch to macOS when my PC doing heavy load (3D renders etc...)

I do have TDM issues, sometimes I am unable to revert back to macOS after TDM was engaged. Currently running High Sierra with all the lates patches and OpenCore. Sometimes it does so and sometimes it dont... before I was running EL Capitan for 1 month and TDM worked 50/50, it was glitching while reverting back to iMac with black screen and need to drag a window in order to refresh screen to get a picture, but it was reverting back to iMac all the time without any fault.
Also engaging TDM is instant but disengaging it sometimes takes 10 minutes after the keypress. Since I was annoyed by that huge wait time I updated to High Sierra (13.6) in order to get a "stable" target display mode expecting it working correctly and faster. As marked in the first post quoted above. But I think it get worse after High Sierra update actually !!!

Usually it decides to obey and revert back to iMac from windows TDM, in HS I don't get any black screen glitches like it was with El Capitan (which is nice) but sometimes it may glitch even "harder" and the screen will remain stuck black while iMac still operating; I can hear sound while I press certain keys meaning OS is till running ok and not freezed. And there is no way to reboot it "gently" (needing to unplug the iMac in order to do a complete reboot or press the power button for longtime).
The wait time to disengage TDM is huge (10-15 min).
Is there a way to make it shorter and this is the main issue?
Is that normal ?
Shure, I always can manually unplug the cable and it will revert intstanly to MacOS but it is not a long term solution and this method dont work if iMac bugged with black screen as described above. Anybody with similar issues ?

Am I doing something wrong here or missing some kexts in Open Core???

Is that possible that my gpu is too slow ? (K1100M)

[Unrelated question] Is there a way to control brightness while in TDM? When engaging TDM backlight goes full blast even if it was dimmed in MacOS prior to that. Any solution would be welcome.

My specs:
- 2010 iMac i5 27" with Quadro K1100M 2G (flashed first with Nicks VBIOS via Windows )
+ running on Open Core with default config.plist (unzipped from Nvidia archive)

Other than that everything works fine, Sleep works well, no other glitches, no kernel panics. Perfect. Gets kinda hot but in acceptable range.

Thanks to the developers/modders for their dedication to this project.

Thanks for your time.

Today I opened my iMac. The gpu has been replaced by Apple in 2014 as it had a known factory problem. Now I have seen that the 3 torx 10 that should hold the graphics card assembly on the motherbord have no ‘teeth’ in them. They look like worn out Torx 10. Totaly no grip possible. So now ... dril a little line with a fine dremel so I kan use a normal screwdriver? Or are there better solutions out there?
There are actually 2 T9 screws to fasten the MXM board to the main board and a T10 screw to fasten the heatsink to the aluminium extension. You should give T9 a try...

PS: the 21.5"/ 27" iMax11,x (2009-2010) & iMac12,x (2011) all exclusively use T10 screws (of varying length), *except*
  • 2 T9 screws to fasten the MXM board to the main board
  • 2x2 T9 *specific* screws to fasten the HDD to the iMac body & the HDD bracket
  • there might be a few other T9 screws around, but you usually do not need to manipulate them when replacing the GPU board...

i've not upgraded my GPU yet but when i use TDM to switch to my PC (which uses a K600 quadro) i can set the brightness with the nvidia software. Is this not an option for you when you use windows? I can also use the brightness controls on the keyboard to increase/decrease or have i went off on a tangent here totally unrelated to your problem? lol

either way i hope you get it fixed because it sounds like i'm going to have a similar setup to you!

Do you use Nvidia Control panel

Can you make a screenshot of your brightness control and your nvidia application you use to control it with ?

Schematics say:
  • in "normal" mode, backlight is driven by a pin from the MXM board (driven by a GPU I/O fed from an internal PWM in the GPU)
  • in TDM mode, backlight is now driven by the SMC (there's a mux to choose PWM source from MXM or SMC, also driven by the SMC), and it's brightness remotely controlled by the connected device (likely through DDC) as stated here ("Display options" section)
You can control the brightness of your iMac display while it’s in Target Display Mode from a connected Mac. Use the Displays pane of System Preferences on the connected Mac, alrenatively, use the brightness keys on the keyboard of the connected Mac.
But how to drive brightness on an iMac in TDM mode from a non-Apple computer ... remains a matter of reverse-engineering the SMC code in the iMac (specifics undocumented so far)! ;)

Hi everyone, I would like to know if I buy an amd wx7100 and just insert it into the imac 27, will it run from under mac os?
I don't understand much about firmware via the programmer, we have a maximum of 780m firmware in Russia, but in my opinion this is a relatively weak card compared to the wx7100.
And the second I wanted to find out why it is impossible to simply install Windows on an old AMD card that supports bootmenu(6870 for example) and after upgrading the card just switch to another disk from under the Mac OS in the system settings

is it correct that I have a wrong internal monitor on an 2011 iMac? and is this the reason why the machine is not going to auto sleep?

sleep kext fixes from highvoltage are installed.

here are 2 photos showing 20% and 100% brightness using nvidia control panel. I can control the brightness natively using keyboard when in TDM. I hope you can see the difference between the two :/ I've ordered a Asus 1030GT for £85 with DP and HDMI as the K600 is dated by a long shot! This will be the last upgrade for my slimline before i venture into new pastures.

No, this is just another sign of the same fact:
No native brightness control because the internal LCD cannot be recognized as the internal one. Your OS believes it is an external display which normally comes with it's own brightness controls.
There is only one way out: A hardware PWM mod.

No, it is not a plug and play solution and I would start the reading here on the first page of this thread. If you do not know much about software and hardware installation you will probably end up in a mess.

You can install Windows in any other Intel based machine, but if you switch the disk it will complain about different hardware and the activation key will go south. Windows does not like changing hardware. You may come around this by reinstalling graphics and other hardware drivers. But this is not the thread specialized on this topic.

Bonjour,

I got the rom of my imac with ROMTool and i wanted to edit it with UEFITool so that my machine starts in black mode natively as does Dark Boot and change the Apple logo by the old one.
Apple.png

I was scared when I saw what UEFITool displayed, then I saw that there was an update of the latter, it now displays the names and by chance I come across the brightness control.

Obviously that surpassed me, but I'm sure this is the solution to have native brightness control and not a modification of the roms of graphics cards, I still did research to understand and I saw that a lot of people used it to Update CPU Microcode, it would be nice to add that of mine suddenly.

Sorry for the novel, I preferred to explain everything.

PS: In my research I obviously saw that we were already talking about UEFITool in this topic.

PS2: Google Trad French to English sorry if not very clear.

Edit: Apparently it's been a long time since we can see names in UEFITool, just that the version I had before didn't show them sorry for the error.

Can i ask what is a realistic price for an i7 870 processor from fleabay or is anyone selling one in here?

Cheers
Have you ever tried to sort the search results in EBay by “sold items” or “finished offers” to get an idea what the average pricing currently may be?

I picked mine up for 25€ + shipping.
Put sortorder at lowest price inc. shipping in your search.
Alternative, An I7-860 tends to be a fair bit cheaper with very little performance difference...

Also, there are xeons out there wich basically are exactly the same as an I7-860/870, they should work and usually are very cheap, I'll double check for you a bit later...

ok i know this is slightly off topic but as berenod mentioned about using xeon chip is there any differences at all by using this chipset compared to the proper i7 one as i've found one but would like to hear what you guys say before i do buy.

cheers

i just find out, that a K3100m is basiclly a 780m with less shader. how big do you see the chance that it runs with the 780m bios flash?

I would like to know if the iMac will be used as a display with a target display mode (I want to connect a ps4 or macbook pro 13) if I replace the video card with a gtx 780m vbios with @Nick [D]vB, for example

a little help from all the 780m users: does your gpu has those missing caps too (the 3 caps in the red rectangle)? or this gpu is damaged somehow?

thanx

Hi there...as per my forum name I need your help about this topic...
I have a imac 21,5 2011 and a quadro k2100m coming from a dell m4800. I made the bootable usb key with ssh access and tried on a different imac alcways 2011 and it works fine. but the imac with the quadro inside seems not to boot. I have black screen and fans spins correctly and won't go full speed (this make me think everything is assembled correctly) have removed the hard drive and when I boot I keep alt button pressed but the usb key led will never turn on, even on the keyboard num lock won't work. Am I missing something? What am I supposed to do while the screen is black? I never disabled SIP, might it be the reason for not booting?
Thanks to everybody in advance for your help
