Apologies for double posting, the replacement for the failed K3100m arrived - reporting another successful Alienware 780m install. Black screen when attempting to boot windows so that's another hurdle but everything else seems to be working fine - idling at 36 degs. Haven't done any heat sync modification, if it runs a bit hot I might follow Mr-Mur's excellent guide for how to do a dyi cooling solution.

Congratulations, thank you!

By the way, what version does your VBIOS have?

Where can I find the vbios version?

System Info, look at Display:
info-GTX-780M.png

Mine, for example, has a VBIOS 80.04.AF.00.03

Yep same version.

So in my excitement I didn't install the nvidia drivers on Windows 10, nor did I setup remote desktop - which is making things difficult.

Hopefully I can get to the Windows install via VirtualBox, setup remote desktop then restart.

I got this mac for $100aud because it was 'faulty', which ended up just an issue with a broken power button (the original gpu is fine so I might resell it to make some $$ back). I've put a replacement power button in but keeps moving slightly out, it turns on and off - but there's no tactile response and It'll eventually move forward so much that it'll stop working.

So to avoid having to open this sucker up yet again in the future I'm going to try and super glue the mental circle that holds the button in place tonight, previously I've used less strong glue and duct tape.

So I can connect to the Mac via screen sharing, it recognizes the K3000M. I am currently trouble shooting on Sierra.

I am trying to patch the AppleGraphicsControl.kext as per post 601 but I am getting an error (see screen shot). SIP is enabled.
It is recognizing my screen as a 23" though this is a 27" iMac.
Booting into safe mode still provides a black screen, don't know what to do?

Please help
Thanks

today i have shipped my the HPK3000M Quadro back to the seller.
I never tested it, but i presumed it would not work.

The reason I have send it back to the seller is also because there was no 8 pin normal bios chip on the board visible, so using an eeprom clip to flash the bios to a dell version should not be easily possible...

see provided pictures..

So be warned the HP Quadro K3000m is maybay not compible, and possibly does not have an easy 8 legged eeprom chip on board..
(maybay I am wrong here, but see provided pictures..)

I've finally got the nvidia display drivers working on Windows 10 with the 780m - well sort of. No video on iMac display - tb to hdmi on tv shows a desktop for a second before showing mouse on black screen, can't do anything except move the mouse around.

Could be a resolution/arrangement thing but I have no way of telling because MS lock out out of display settings when using remote desktop (this is why I hate Windows).

Some people on posts ages ago were talking about having to edit a .inf file in the drivers folder to get the cards working on Windows 10, but they're super vague. Anyone got any ideas on how I get the internal display working with Windows 10?

Edit: Looks like it's not detecting the iMac display for some reason.

Yes that is the EEPROM, however that is a difficult package type to work with. I don't think the clip pins would have been able to make contact with that. Try to bid/buy a Alienware 780M, it seems those are the most successful, and the same card that MacVidCards owns/working on a rom for.

I had success with 780M too! I just have to modify the heatsink to fit correctly, but otherwise it boots up fine and have image on both external and internal displays. I'll post the bios version and stuff once thats done.

What do you guys recommend to do for a fresh installation? I'll format my SSD with a fresh High Sierra, but should i install Windows too with nvidia drivers?

I recommend you make your first partition High Sierra even if you are installing Mojave (you didn't say you were, I'm putting this out there for everyone else) . The first partition is the one the iMac will always fall back on in an NVram reset. Also enable screen sharing, I accidentally installed Nvidia Mojave kexts to High Sierra, and the only thing that saved me was screen sharing, so enable that too.

Tried with a display connected to one of the tb ports? I have a HP k3100m that booted once (no video) but wouldn't even post after I tried booting again, no idea why.

Maybe it's worth trying a non-hp firmware? https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/140886/140886

Got it working :).
I am using a dell Quadro K3000M 2Gb. I have anouther 2011 27" iMac, I might try a K3100M in it. Pretty sure it needs to be a Dell or Alienware card, I have never herd of anyone getting an HP card working.

I tried installing El Capitan (via pulling the HD and installing with a different Mac) started the computer, took forever the first time, but the screen came on and worked perfectly. I may try sierra again, i think the only problem is that kext file. It doesn't matter at this point though El Capitan is fine.

Thermals on this card are good, ran the Valley benchmark at the highest preset and topped out at 76C, idle is around 50C. This card is not a large upgrade from the stock (though it is decent upgrade from the 1Gb 6970M mine had), it does make a great replacement for a dead card, at a reasonable price. I got mine for a steal ar $40 but they are easily found on ebay at around $75.

I can provide screen shots and benchmark results upon request.

Note: Anyone looking to use a K3000M, I can only confirm that one from a Dell will work, I have not tried the HP one.

Update on Alienware 780m on Windows 10: Works fine with secondary display now and it's detecting the internal display and acting like it's active (even reports it as an imac display with the correct resolution) - but no video.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this? I've tried modifying the inf files as per https://null-src.com/posts/nvidia-notebook-driver-inf-mod/post.php but there's already a matching line on the dell/alienware so it's using that.

A few people have posted with the same issue but they haven't said how they resolved it. I assume it's an LVDS/eDP issue.

Have you taken a bright flashlight to the screen? It's strange that it can detect the display with resolution. I'm thinking backlight isn't be turned on in Windows.

hi,

thx for your message
if i'm correct the Dell Alienware GTX765M should also work.. ?
and the bios that macvidcards is creating, can be modified to work on other nvidia 7xxM series aswell ?
What do you think.. ?

The GTX780M is more than twice the cost of the GTX765M..

For example what do you think of this GTX765M ?

https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/Orig...df86-4f97-bc69-2cde3c81b72f&priceBeautifyAB=0

It looks on the pictures like it has an 8-legged eeprom chip on it ?
so my eeprom clip should fit on.. ?
What do you think..

Also,
this is the Only GTX780m Dell version which I can find on AliExpress that has an 8-legged normal eeprom chip.
the other green PCB ones, look like they dont have it, what do you think.. ?

The dell 765m should also work, however the seller sent me a dud and it never worked for me. I ended up buying an 780m instead. As for rom, MacVidCards (Rominator) will never share the rom he created. You would have to send the card away to him to be flashed and it will come back with an EFI rom. Over on Netkas forums there is a thread (http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,13815.0.html) where Rominator has modified a 780m to have boot screens but it's still very WIP. For the whole EEPROM situation, I wouldn't worry about it, just focus on finding the correct card we are using. a picture of my 780m is on post #872 of this thread, It doesn't have an 8 legged EEPROM on it either. (my 765m did which is practically a k3000m) Their is good chance Rominator is working on a 765m rom, but he never stated he did. It's still too early to know.

Hi, thanks for your message again !
I have posted something on the netkas topic ;)..

Since it looks like Rominator on Netkas posted that the rom he is making should also work on other fermi cards, GTX765M is also..

The GTX780m which you use, has green PCB and does not have 8-legged eeprom bios ?
i see different versions of this card..
which GTX780m, do you have ?

I really dont know what to buy now :S.
I think its always best to buy a mxm card with normal 8-legged eeprom, so i can hook my eeprom clipper on it to change bios if the current one doesnt work which is on it..
what do you think.. ?

The exact pictures of my card are on page 35, but i'll include the picture again. No it does not have a standard 8 legged EEPROM on it. This is a dell card with firmware 80.04.AF.00.03 on it. To be sure it's a dell card it will have this sticker (see picture 2) on it.

That is interesting that the 765m is practically the same as a K3000M, seeing as the k300m can be found a lot cheaper. The cheapest 765m I found was $90 whereas i have bought two k3000m one for $40 and one for $60.

Is there any reason why it might be better to go with a 765m?

If you don't need the added power of the GTX780m, I would say go with a K3000M. I asked highvoltage12v if there was any advantage to the 765m over K3000M, we'll see what he says but so far i've had good luck with the K3000M.
The only thing with the K3000M is you have to find one from a Dell it seems the HP cards might be incompatible.
I just bought this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/232374986669 He says its a Dell card, I will tell you if it works when I get it.

I have bought an HP K3000M, but i have send it back since it did not had an 8-legged eeprom chip.
This looks to have one, and is a Dell card.
Poland is nearby for me, and i should get it faster than buying from ali express China..

Also want to note that Rominator on netkas topic, said the the rom he is making for gtx780m, should also probably work for other fermi gtx cards, or am I wrong here.. ?
I think a rom for GTX765M or 770M for example, is most likly going to be there instead of a rom for a Quadro K3000M...

I think that card should work, decent price too.
Yes, if that rom does come out it would be a very compelling advantage to the GTX765m.

Just curios, has anyone ever gotten a 9-series card to work? (eg GTX980m)

Hey guys,
is it possible to put that GTX 765M GPU in iMac 21'5 mid 2010? Someone in the beginning of this topic showed that this type of MXM card fits in 21'5 2011 iMac. Maybe it also fits in the previous model but what about overheating or power issue? Did anyone test it?
