For sure Target disk mode does not work without boot screens, neither does internet recovery. I tried both via thunderbolt cable and firewire 800 cable. The iMac will ignore the commands and continues to boot. Even if you choose target disk mode in System preferences and restart.

Ah ok, thx for your message.
thats a pitty that target disk mode does not work, it would have made thinks a lot easier....

99% of our issues would be solved by having bios boot - which Rominator has solved. Now despite blowing a whole lot of wind about it he seems to have dropped off the radar and there's no signs it'll progress further. Which is fine, he's under no obligation to finish the rom, but if he has no intention of completing it i'd wish he'd release the rom so at least someone can use it.

Edit:

Update with the 780m - I did some digging and I found that there are different bios versions available for both the Dell and the Alienware versions of the 780m, I was running the Alienware version. So I threw caution to the wind and decided I'd try the Dell bios. After flashing I had to edit the nvidia inf file to allow the device id as per but it installed fine and it's now working perfectly on Windows 10.

But now High Sierra isn't detecting the internal display, so now I need to work out why it's not working on the Macos side of things.

2 steps forward, 1 step back.

I recently bought a Nvidia GTX765M Dell card.
I hope this one will work in our iMac 27" 2011 model.

I will keep you guys posted about results, and my heatsink mod.. ;)

Can somebody here btw test and confirm Target disk mode is working, with a GPU withouth EFI Bootscreen.. ?
[doublepost=1537531927][/doublepost]Somebody here knows whats going on in this topic ? :
https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/t...in-imac-111-late-2009-display-brightness-fix/

They have changed some ACPI programming in MacOS here ?

It seams they have managed to get the display shown as internal imac display, aswell as brightness controll fully working..
How did they do this, anybody here got experience with this mod.. ?
That is me trying to get brightness to work but no success yet...

Hi, i'm sorry I have read over that information.

Anyway, it looks like you did managed to get the Display showing up as Internal iMac Display, instead of external display.
Is this correct ?

Thats some good news indeed..
Have you flashed your card with an Eeprom clipper, connected to the 8-legged eeprom ?

My Dell Alienware GTX765M is comming soon trough the mail, and I can only find 1 bios version of that.
I really hope it works..

I'm btw still not sure how to cool the vram chips on the back on the GPU.
I have seen lots of pictures, with people doing copper cooling pads or plates on the back.
I hope thats enough for the cooling, I have also seen a custom cooling hood, made from the HDD fan to also cover the backside of the MXM card.

What have you done with this ?
And can you read out all the temps within Windows ?
I am wondering how it is possible to read the GPU temperatures, since MacOS will only show Heatsink temp.
Windows Bootcamp can make this possible for us ??
How else can we check if our new MXM cards are running at good temperatures.. ?

I don't think temps are a big problem, at least not on 765 i run it without anything on back chips.
Worse problem is brightnes on full blast as it too generates a lot of heat.

Wow nice !!

Thanks for the great pictures.. ;)

Have you documented this anywhere ?
Or can I try to follow your topic from insanelymac ?
If I remember correct, you have an late 2009 27", we have Mid 2011 27" models running here..

You have btw also an Nvidia GTX765M as I can see..
I have just orded one trough eBay.
Its an Dell Alienware version.

Do you have the same card btw ??
Or which one do you have ??

I really hope the bios on mine works OOB..

Do you btw also need Nvidia Webdrivers, or can it run with and withouth them.. ?

Yes alienware GTX765M, just put it in and it works with known problems.
Tried with and without nvidia web drivers but seems to work somehow better on original drivers.

i think, you its the easies way to connect iMac HDD to another Mac.
Install MacOS Mojave on it, and run the Dosdude1 patcher on it with the neccesery patches for that Mac.

Than put the HDD back in the iMac and boot MacOS Mojavo.

Since you dont have a bootscreen, you wont see anything during installation or anything prior to MacOS Desktop.
[doublepost=1537877810][/doublepost]
Is updating (non-clean install) to Mojave using the dosdude1 patcher and without boot screen possible?

Maybay possible, you can test out your self.
at least I reccomend enabling screen sharing or something similar like teamvieuwer VNC etc.

As far as i read in this topic, GTX765M should also work withouth Nvidia webdrivers, so you screen will be back-up and running when you meet welcom screen of Mojave i Think..

Since my HD6970m died 2 days ago, i ordered a used Dell Alienware GTX765m on eBay and i hope it arrives tomorrow.

I have two questions:
I am using Windows 10 over Bootcamp to play some games. Is it still possible to boot into Windows by selecting the Bootcamp as Startvolume in MacOS, because there is no boot menu?

Will Filevault still work, or do i need to deactivate it? (Because of no boot menu in the beginning when it asks for the password to unlock the file system)

Thank you all so much. I hope i will get it to work again. I am realy relying on that machine!

I actually updated to Mojave right after my previous post :) It wasn't a smooth experience though…

Created bootable USB drive using dosdudes Mojave patcher and switched the boot priority using Startup Disk.
Got greeted by the Mojave welcome screen and continued with the setup.
After the update completes it is required to restart and once again boot from the custom USB drive to apply the legacy patch. Keep in mind that after the initial setup the boot priority is reverted to the internal drive, meaning that with no boot screen you will have to hold ALT key blindfold and use the arrow keys to select the correct external USB drive once again. If you have only one internal volume drive it should be pretty easy, I guess…

Unfortunately I was not able to test that because I use Anne Pro mechanical keyboard that has a known issue of not working while in EFI/BIOS.
So I was forced to revert to my old radeon card and probably restarted my iMac 30 times before the damn keyboard registered the ALT key on boot and finally applied the patch :D

I think Filevault will work, but you have to enter password blindfold for Filevault since there is not EFI bootscreen visible..
Also many people report problems with Bootcamp not showing anything on their display..
Maybay this has been solved i dont know yet, I also don't know if there are problems with GTX765M with Bootcamp.

I have just also ordered an Alienware GTX765M, it will deliverd in a few days, then I can test it out...

ok thats nice, so you do get a screen visible even in the MacOS Mojave setup ?
I thought this was not possible to get a screen this early stage..
Only visible while at MacOS Desktop..

I guess it has something to do with the native macOS drivers for GTX765?

Also worth mentioning is that I've had screen support for the High Sierra update (from Sierra) and after booting Paragon Hard Disk Manager via USB.

@sirphunk,

Yes that is correct its just not showing up, since there is no Apple EFI compatible card inside the iMac.

@codesoho,

Ok thats nice, that confirms it that this GTX765M works with the built in MacOS drivers, aswell as Nvidia Webdrivers.
Which makes it alot easier to install MacOS or do other things outside MacOS.
it does only not display EFI bootscreen then, thats all..
And of course has the other things not working like brightness controll..

I also can surely confirm that 780M also works OOB with stock Apple drivers, there are no need to install Nvdia Web Drivers

WE ALL NEED A BOOTSCREEN (AND BRIGHTNESS CONTROL AS WELL)!

Quick reply:
I just installed the GTX 765m. It is really Plug and play, but without bootscreen. See the Screenshots.

I am so happy that you guys managed to fiddle out wich graphiccard is working fine. Thank you all.
That was a 100,- EUR repair and a little performance boost.

Now i will test everything in Windows 10 with Furmark and see, if the Temperature is okay.
What should be max temperature?

OK folks, been a party to this thread for literally years.

I have a 2011 iMac 27" that I need to upgrade to Mojave - since it's been on 10.12.6 for 2 years and it sports a RAID0 SSD boot volume.

WTF do I have to do to get it to install? What video card can I get?
