Ok but i Will have to make a clean install with the amd card since i have no picture with the 765m before the os is installed
Are you sure? Why don't you just try getting to the Mojave setup welcome screen first and see If you're getting a picture.
Because on mine 765 the only thing missing is just the initial boot drive selection menu.

Just wanted to say that a Alienware 765M 2gb have been working pretty great in a 21'5 inch Imac 2010.Except no boot-chime and only getting 4k@30hz on external monitor. I guess it have been down clocked, the performance increase has been huge - but maybe not that huge as you could expect. Anyway, still worth it and have served me and the computer good.

Question:
I swapped the 765m to the original card the other day.
When I press power button, only the fans spin, no screen, no screen light, no boot chime. Only the first LED lights up on the motherboard. I guess I have to test reseating the card. But I'm worried indeed.
(During the process I did break the LCD temperature sensor cable, but that should not make this symptoms right?)
Any suggestions? :)

As far as i Know, when only LED1 lights up, and iMac wont start further, the graphics card is not detected at all.
Even a dead AMD gpu the system will boot, since it detects a GPU at all.

Try reseating the GPU I would say..
And I also think that even with a broken temp. sensor the iMac would still poweron.

If needed, I post the iMac technician guide in this post, maybay you can use it.
it has some info in there about the leds on the logic board..
see provided link here with files :
https://floorvannierop.stackstorage.com/s/nZfukYJPk4Jpeak

Als the iMac will power on, even withouth a display attached, I have tested this myself with the original AMD card.
Then i have hooked up an external monitor at the time I tested this..

ATM there are no NVIDIA Web drivers available for Mojave. What worked for me was doing a clean Mojave install without applying the legacy video card patch.

Don't swap the GTX765. To play around the boot screen issues use Startup Disk to initiate the setup from USB. While installing Mojave open Startup Disk once more (from the apple menu) and be prepared to select and boot to USB the exact moment the setup is complete. You will have 10 seconds to do that at the end or otherwise the iMac will try to boot to the freshly installed Mojave volume and you will be facing a black screen. If you do succeed to boot from the USB post install, the only thing left is to apply all the required patches for your model of iMac except for the legacy video card. Enjoy Metal support :)

BTW if anyone knows how to remove the dosdudes video card patch pls let us know.

I do find this weird, since people reported in this topic that their GTX765M works even withouth using nvidia webdriver, but also with built in MacOS driver from High Sierra works.
Why doesn't MacOS Mojave's built in driver not work ?

It makes sence to me that Nvidia 7xxm cards work with build in MacOS Drivers, since iMac 2013 series use the same Nvidia mxm series cards...

You still

you still need to use dosdude1 patcher tool, since your mac is not supported by Apple. (iMac is not a MacPro)
With an Metal GPU, you wont have UI glitches anymore, since the AMD HD5xxx and 6xxx are not supported at all in Mojave.

So upgrade your GPU, and then run Mojave installer with dosdude1 patcher software..
http://dosdude1.com/mojave/

Thank you for the assistance. :)
I'm still confused with Apple's choice here, I mean... why does Mojave need a metal graphics card? What does Mojave do that is so GPU intensive?

i just swapped the card with a gtx765m and stil the same issue the OS feels laggy and the cpu load is around 20% so it seems and feels like a laggy GPU driver. if i drag a browser windows up and down its laggy and not running smooth.
It could be you allowed the Mojave patcher to patch video drivers, you have to uncheck it Everytime.

Hi was able to run Mojave (thx dosdude1) on my iMac 12,2 / AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 Mb;
But the colors where awful - had the reverse to High Sierra;
So, what graphic card can replace the native AMD (being not to big/ not to much heat,…) + will support Mojave?

my eBay Dell Alienware GTX765M has arrived few days aggo, I'm hoping to find some time soon to built it in.
i Will show all results and exact type I have used, and post it on this topic !!

Hey I would like to upgrade to mojave on my iMac 2011 and was looking at this Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M.. Will this card work ok? and will I need to use any third party fan controllers after I install this?

This is a second editing machine and was hoping to give it a little more boost. Is there a difference using a AMD card vs Nvidia in this older machine when thinking about upgrading?

No we don't know of a single GTX 970/m that has DCB tables that would come close to lining up the iMac. Maybe in some wild future that the 780m rom has been fully finished, Mac Vid cards would consider creating a 970/m. We would all be considering a newer cooler running card if one existed.

Software wise yes the will work with High Sierra, it's the same generation of Nvidia card the 2013 iMac used. Hardware wise modifications will be needed to the heatsink as stated earlier. I'd like to post pictures, but the file sizes are too large.
EDIT: I have modified the image quality to fit under the 2mb limit.

what is that paste you use on the memmory that white stuff ?

I have a very similar story with my 2008 MacPro3,1. For graphics I’ve had the GT120 but since High Sierra Aperture/Photos RAW image file editing has been so slow it’s been unbearable basically. Anyway, I upgraded to Mojave thanks to dosdude1’s patcher, with no improvement in the photo editing front. (I could have stayed in ElCapitan or Sierra land I guess, but I wanted to get FCPX updates).

Anyway, due to the graphics anomalies I applied the legacy video card patch that solved the main issues with the UI. But the idea of a GPU upgrade finally won me over as I was more and more convinced that Photos somehow allocated processing on the GPU (gpu acceleration/Metal or something), as disk, memory (12GB$ and CPU were clearly not the bottlenecks.

So, I got a used MSI Hawk GTX760 2GB for 50 € and (once getting the power supply line sorted) booted to Mojave to see similar anomalies that the GT120 has before the patch. Oddly, the Patch updater didn’t list the legacyGPU patch applied at that point but I had not removed it either, nor could I find a way to do it as codesoho pointed out. Re-installing the patch did not change anything either.

As I knew the GTX760 was supposed to run with macOS drivers (albeit without boot screen), after a couple of failed attempts to revert to High Sierra from Time Machine I chose to clean install Mojave, skip the legacy video patch and do the backup retrievals manually using Finder. And there you go, no anomalies with the GTX760, Metal support reported clearly and what’s best, editing in Photos is snappy again!

I can’t afford much at the moment but a minor donation to dosdude1 is due. I have very few reasons to consider a new Mac anytime soon, I could even just get a 4k monitor now. The MacPro3,1 continues to amaze me.

Regards
k-yo

PS. as a sidenote, I’m not very keen on Migration Assistant, it somehow brought over the legacy video patch first time ran it on top of a clean install (I did uncheck Computer from the settings list). Lacie(Seagate) 2BigNAS luckily allows browsing the Time Machine dated backups nicely.
I did the clean install with the same credentials as the user I had made the backups with. It’s also good to see the full restore-from-TimeMachine option in the post-install tool, as it may come handy later on.

Yesterday I finallyhave had some time to upgrade one of our 27" 2011 iMac failing AMD Graphics card.

I have used an Dell Alienware GTX765M 2048MB, which worked great btw.
No bootscreen and brightness of course as expected.
HDMI worked only on one of the thunderbolt ports, I have tested this if anybody is interessted in this..
used mini-dp to hdmi adapter, and tested with 1080p monitor, worked no problems, but only 1 external display is possible with this card at the moment..

Also like expected the GTX765M worked great with OOB Built in MacOS Drivers.
I have not installed third-party Nvidia webdrivers, as I think they are not naccecery.. ?
I read some posts here that nvidia -webdrivers cause more problems and simetimes glithces, beter use built-in MacOS Nvidia Drivers.
Am I correct here.. ?

I will post my pictures here, about the mod we have made with a dremmel on the heatsink.
I have used thermal pads on the GPU ram, aswell as the capacitors which need cooling, I had to use 2 layers of thermal pads in the end to make good contact whith the heatsink..
(3 was to much, causing flex to the mxm pcb, and 1 was not enough)
i have ordered K5 Pro, and I hope this is the best solution ?
What do you guys think of this cooling ?

I'm still worried about the 4 GPU ram chips on the backside of the graphics card.
they are not cooled at all.
I can also not measure any temperatures, so I dont know if everything is cool enough...

I removed the original Dell Alienware x-clamp, and used the Apple x-clamp.
It has also been modifed to give acces to the surrounding capacitors, not to make a short.
And to be safe, I have placed some Scotch magic tape arround it, not to make any electrical short to the mxm pcb to be extra safe...
( I did not had electrical tape at hand..)

On this topic here :
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3590782/all

I found a guy who used copper thermal pads on the back-side of his GTX780m, and created a custom air duct cooling from the HDD fan.
I'm planning to do something similar like he did.
Anybody got experience with this.. ?

I really think those ram chips in the back-side need cooling..

I'm planning of testing running Bootcamp to see if I can get GPU-Z check GPU temps.
And also try running GPU-Z within MacOS with Wine, and see if that works, that would be the best..

MacOS Mojave also worked great btw, with dosdude1 patcher and withouth selecting legacy video patcher of course..
This GTX765M is fully metal compatible !

Some more pictures to show..
Unfortionutly I cannot get GPU-Z to show GPU information yet..
Anybody got a fix for me mayday ?

Would it be possible to let wine connect my GPU to GPU-Z App, to get gpu temperatures show within MacOS ?
Would be great if that will work..

I tried starting Windows 10 Bootcamp install, but screen is all black at install, cannot see anything :S...
Do I need to hook up external hdmi monitor again, to view bootcamp screen.. ?
All I want for now, is to see my GPU temperatures, and GPU Ram temperatures that would be great !
[doublepost=1538925422][/doublepost]
This is what GPU-Z reports for my 780m, but I'm not sure if that temp is coming from the die or the heat sync sensor.

Edit: here's the temps after playing Fallout New Vegas all day:

How did you get a bootcamp screen visible ?
Used external monitor, my iMac display is only Black and nothing visible.. (using Dell Alienware Nvidia GTX765M)

I flashed to the Dell bios - there are seperate Dell and Alienware bios files for the 780m. Alienware results in MacOs working fine but no backlight in Bootcamp, I spent some time to see if I could force Windows to use the backlight but couldn't come up with a solution so I tried flashing with the Dell bios, which works well under Windows but results in no internal screen on MacOs.

Hi,
aah ok, thanks for your info !
its more clear to me now...

I will try again with external monitor hoocked up, aswell as lightning a flashlight to the screen to hope and see if anything is visible..
Since there is not backlight :S...

Btw, how did you cool your GPU ram chips on the backside.. ?
Mine are not cooled yet, and I'm worried about them getting too hot..
I can also not measure them in anyway now :S....

I used Arctic Cooling Thermal Pad for GDDR5 memory chips.
But you have to swap stock 6770M radiator with 2 heatpipes (PN: 661-5967-A) with a bigger one (PN: 730-0628-A).
More details at my web-site (it is in Russian, but Goggle Translate will help): http://www.schidakov.ru/all/imac-upgrade-2600-and-gtx780m/

Also, I made my own copper radiator for GDDR5 chips at back side:
View attachment 778320

Full report is also available at: http://www.schidakov.ru/all/imac-upgrade-gddr5-gtx780m/

Great work here with the coper back plate !
Have you used 1mm coper here, or thinner ?

I have just ordered 3M thermal adhesive tape, I think that will work great with some custom copper plates like you made.. ?

I'm also planning of making a custom air cooler to cool the backside, like shown in the picture bellow
I got this info from here :
