Hey guys. I will not create a winclone to share as it is illegal and I personally don’t want to. However I will answer your questions as to what step you are one so you can proceed to the next step.

I have taken my imac apart 25 times so be prepared to do the same. But after everything I can say windows 7 runs like a dream on my 27” iMac 2011.

For people who wants to run windows 7 on your iMac, I would advise NOT to use winclone. DO NOT mod the files of bootcamp. I bought windows 7 from eBay and then downloaded a legitimate copy. I then burned the copy to a DVD-R. A USB will not work. I also let my lcd screen fall from the motherboard but repaired it myself.
[doublepost=1557133715][/doublepost]Disclaimer: The following steps is what I have done in order to get windows 7 working with the iMac screen. This is purely for educational purposes. Do this at your own risk.

In order to make windows 7 you will need the following:
- Mini Display Port Adapter with HDMI Cable
- Another Monitor or TV
- Legitimate Purchased Microsoft Windows 7 Key (USB’s WILL NOT WORK)
- DVD-R (or DVD-RW)(To burn the legitimate copy of Windows 7 64bit I bought off eBay)
- A second computer (I had a MacBook Pro)
- Your optical Drive MUST be in your iMac as this will be the only way to boot into windows 7.
- Upgrade to an SSD before attempting this.

If I understand correctly, you have got the internal iMac display working using this method ?

I have just upgraded my mid 2011 21.5" iMac with the Nvidia Quadro K2000M 2GB which I could get really cheap. Videocard works fine. I also can see it does have metal support. I used dosdude1's tool to install Mojave.

I have no sound and no WIFI in Mojave. I will figure out what's the reason for that. Happy with the result.

I just connected an external HDMI screen to a Belkin thunderbolt-HDMI dongle and the second screen also works fine. (Its a Lenovo LS2221 Wide)

Thats good ;)
External monitor workes for most of use, with only 1 monitor.

Audio and Wifi worked fine for me on Mojave.
But I have tested Mojave a while back, with 10.14.1 or .0 not sure.
I just used the dosdude1 patcher tool, which selected the Wifi and audio for me I think, and it worked then.

Maybe check if you are using the latest patcher tool, or contact dosdude1.. ?
[doublepost=1557244896][/doublepost]
Yes correct

Ok thanks, i will test this methode.
So if I just pop in my Win7 DVD, and hook up an external monitor and then install it should be fine.. ?
Am I correct here.. ?

Also install Drivers is no problem I presume, and disconnecting external monitor gives no problems to internal iMac display ?
The internal display keeps working then.. ?

I think you need to use Bootcamp utility to create a bootable dvd, no?

UPDATE*** READ MY PREVIOUS POSTS BEFORE READING THIS*** For running Windows 7 successfully on iMac display, I have tried numerous NVIDIA drivers (425.31(latest) and 353.62) BUT the only driver that worked to display on the iMac screen was NVIDIA Driver 347.52. Note that you NEED to remote access (I downloaded 3 remote desktop softwares which are logmein, anydesk and teamviewer that open automatically when windows starts without any user password, make sure your user logs in automatically) After you install NVIDIA Driver 347.52 and have your external tv/monitor connected to your Mini Diplay Port (I have a 32 inch tv HDMI to MiniDisplayPort) go into 'adjust screen resolution' in display settings and choose 'extend these displays'. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY I CAN VIEW MY IMAC SCREEN. Idk why the latest drivers do not work.

No you don't need bootcamp assistant to create the bootalbe dvd. Bootamp assistand is needed only for INSTALLING windows 7. To make a bootable DVD - You purchase a legitimate windows 7 from ebay. Buy DVD-R 4.7GB. put the DVD-R in the mac. Once you download the Legitimate 64 bit windows 7 .iso file (follow ebay seller instructions) just right click and click 'Burn to disc'. Great summary post at the top of this thread, THANKS!

Now a question, as searching this thread didn't yield a good answer.

I got for cheap, and thus ended up speculatively buying, one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-HD8970M-Graphics-Alienware-Replacement/dp/B07JZFTHJJ/

The board layout is virtually identical to the original iMac Radeon graphics card, so the heat sink should fit.

Also, here there's a list of compatible device IDs:
https://www.reddit.com/r/hackintosh...supported_amd_gpus_from_macos_mojave_beta_11/
which specifically lists, this:
  • 0x68011002: Neptune XT ( Radeon HD 8970M )
and here:
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/187462/187462
or
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/158775/158775
or
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/169799/169799
the device ID listed for the card in question, is a match to what's listed as supported.

So, one would think this card should work.
What am I missing? Nobody tried? Issues with the on-board firmware?

I have successfully installed a gtx 780m 4gb and it works on my iMac for high Sierra and windows 7. I wanted to get the best card possible to play games at high settings but after spending days researching This forum I realized:
- The imac gets very very hot and limits the graphics card automatically.
- The 2011 iMacs only support the Kepler Architecture Cards.
- I analyzed the success rate people have had with all types of graphics cards (I was looking at the gtx 880m but this forum did not have much information about it. There’s a video on YouTube of installing a gtx 980m into a 2011 iMac and did not work at all because it had the newer architecture.
- I received advice from more experienced people on YouTube before I made their purchase.
If I were in your position which I 100% was, I would have peace of mind knowing that a gtx 700m series (e.g gtx765m or gtx 780m) WILL DEFINITELY work (subject to the examples given are from an Alienware computer. Disclaimer: this is purely my experience and may not work for you.)

My gtx 780m cost €230. So you can save up for gtx 700m series or unless you can find success stories of the card you’re looking at to buy then do it. But do not listen to the posts or comments that say ‘IT SHOULD WORK’ find a person that Has ACTUALLY done it! :)

He already bought the card, so might as well try it... :)

About heating issues, are you using Macs Fan Control? Do you have heatpads on the Vrams? Did you redirected the airflow from your HDD fan towards the GPU? Also, the screen is really hot on full brightness(the 21.5 is much cooler), so installing a dyinglight module and just turning the brightness down to like 90% will cool things down pretty nicely.

Did you used K4/K5 thermal pasta for the vram chips ?
I would highly reccomend you use that instead of thermal pads.
Also did you applied copper chime heatsink mod on the vram chips on the backside ?
(see my posts and pictures from me and others on this topic)

As far as I know, most Dell/Alienware Nvidia kepler cards work with the 2009 trough 2011 iMac's.
Best success rate is still I think GTX765/770/780m series.

I stumbled upon this thread from youtube. I've got a mid 2011 27" iMac with a corei7 3.4GHZ. I don't want to let this baby go but because I can't update any of the apps I use for work because Mojave doesn't work on the Radeon card installed my best option is upgrading the graphics card.

What's the highest level of card I can put into this thing?

So I just stumbled into a 2011 27 iMac model 12, 2 for $129 or so and just my luck. Apple dropped support for it. So what's the cheapest gpu I can put into this machine and still have support for Mojave using dosdude's patch? The cards listed on the wiki 1st post are rather expensive. Looks like the Quadro K2000M seems to be the cheapest of them all but I've been reading all the posts here and it seems like that particular card isn't recommended due to some bracket issues with the 27" model?

as far as I know Dell/Alienware GTX780m is your best choice.
But I think I saw somebody else here who claimed his Dell/Alienware GTX880m worked, this card is a little bit faster than GTX780m and has 8GB vram as far as I know.

the Quadro K2000M is only good for 21,5" iMac's, since it is a smaller MXM-B card.

27" iMac's from 2009-2011 all use regular MXM-A cards, the 21,5" models use smaller MXM-B video cards.

nice one, I have tested one of our 27" models a while back with Mojave.
Wifi and bluetooth worked fine back then.
But I was using 10.14.1 or 10.14.0, not sure.

Also make sure you deselect the Graphics patch in dosdude1's patcher tool, every time you run it.
Since the tool auto selects the Graphics patch, which is not neccerey for this model iMac with an upgraded Metal supported card.

Only one monitor output works, second does not work for most cards.
This is the case for most Dell/Alienware Nvidia cards, as far as I know..
And as far as I know, nobody here as posted a succes to get 2 external monitors working..

Darn it. That quadro is super cheap. I'll have to think on it. Might just keep the imac on high sierra or see about getting Linux on it instead. Might be the cheaper route.

You can install a k2000m with the bigger heatsink, works just fine, no issues. I did that once. You need to drill out the mounting bracket holes or use the one from the old card, but in my case it was really hard to remove it, so i just drilled it out. If you switch the brackets, you need to modify it so it won't short any other stuff on the pcb(but you need to do with mxm-a cards too)

Hi guys, someone in my neighbourhood threw a 2011 3.1GHz i5 iMac 27" away, and I took it in to try to repair it. For some reason, I can't get past the Apple logo when booting and can't get it to Internet Recovery mode - the progress bar completes but then the computer reboots to a blank screen. I did manage to boot Windows 10 Pro from an external drive, but then the screen glitches and turns black as soon as it finishes booting (sometimes even before it does).

The graphics card is clearly faulty, and hasn't shown any improvements after being baked. I'd like to know if replacing the graphics card would possibly solve the boot loop issue, because investing the money on it for nothing would be a tough pill to swallow for a uni student...

Cheers

I ended up getting a GTX 765M 2gb for my iMac (it was the cheapest I could find in Australia, but meh) and after installing it the computer doesn't boot.

I get the first status LED and the optical drive fan starts for about 2 secs until the iMac dies again. Any ideas?

Can I see pics of your X-clamp, if not modified, a cap could be shorting on the X-clamp. I would also try to reseat the card again.

The no sound and no wifi issues means the patcher never installed the correct kexts for those two. You can reboot the patcher by plugging your Patched installer USB drive in, heading over to System Preferences/Startup Disk and selecting the drive and clicking reboot. When in the patcher unclick "Legacy video card patch" as this will break Video Acceleration. Although you haven't mentioned it, sleep is most likely broken, this is because of the SandyBridge kexts missing in Mojave. Although we aren't using the iGPU, these kexts are still needed for proper sleep functionality. Right click to open kext utility, then immediately quit. Select all the files inside the folder and drag them on top of kext utility and allow them to install.

Yeah i think it's sitting right on top of a few Caps. If you want you can temporarily loosely attach your card to the heatsink without the X-clamp and see if it boots. But your X-Clamp really needs to be modified with a dremel so it doesn't sit on top of SMD components and short. There's a chance you could have damaged the card by sending voltage where it shouldn't have gone too.

Also what was your old card? if it was the 6970m you will also have to trim the heatsink as well. I have a very old post here like 50 pages ago (and many others such as @passatgt and @FlorisVN have done) showing the mods I have mentioned.

you can see page 1's post for my X-Clamp Mod.

It's still not working. How can I test if I shorted the video card?
