I'm not sure with an MXM card. But if the iMac only stays on for 1 second and turns off, it's most likely a power draw issue.

I had that issue with a bad memory slot too, so its worth to check just with a single memory and move it around the four slot.

I ordered an GT130M pulled from an Acer for my iMac Early 2009. Unfortunately, this card not work. The iMac boots up normally but internal screen stays black. Only two of the four diagostics LED on the logicboard are glowing.

So i had the idea to connect to the iMac from another PC using VNC. I saw that there's no graphics card information in the "About this Mac" dialogue, the entire field is empty.

Is there anything I need to do to get this graphics card working?

Well I bought a mid 2011 27" imac 16gb i7 with the Radeon 6970m 1gb off of a guy who is a field tech manager for Apple for $300 (in very good condition) just under a couple of months ago. All has been working great until last night and started to experience lines and the screen went white having to hard reset. I rebooted the machine and after a few minutes, same thing.

Talked to the guy and he apologized, and offered to buy it back, but I did ask if he has any options as I would like to keep the machine if we can get it to work.. He asked for the serial number and is going to get back with me.

So far, I have not yanked this apart. I have baked my old PS3 in the past a few times.. and do have technical capability to throw a Dell / Alienware 765 in it (just wish a bios was available for the initial boot screen / brightness).

I might take him up on his generous offer to buy it back, and see what else I can find.. Maybe apply the money spent on an iMac that does not have the GPU issues and is natively mojave compatible..

Any other suggestions? I could probably get a 2013 that already has metal support for $600 and not have to go through the risks and iterations of taking it apart, the possibility of getting a bad card, etc..

For $300, let him buy it back imo.

I ran Apple hardware test, no trouble found.. but stuck in a boot, apple loading, white screen, freeze then restart.. I will assume hard drive got corrupted with all the hard restarts..

Going into internet recovery mode now... will check the hard disk

I did not do any time machine backups on this, no important data lost, so fresh install it is

This is my first iMac, it really is a great design ergonomically, but real sh*t for handling heat because of the ergonomics,... the newer ones are better as the components do not run as hot.

Edit: Internet Recovery gives me white screen. Trying safe mode.

Edit 2: Can boot into safe mode... GPU must be bad...

Edit 3: Running time machine backup on it. Will attempt to reset.. but ya know.

one thing newer iMac's don't have, is a replacable MXM video card.
If the GPU die's on them, it cannot be changed, only the whole logic board which will be more expensive.
This I think one of the better things of these older iMac's.
They are also very serviceable for today's Apple standards..

question: will the lower power apple OEM 6750m or 6770m be enough to power the 27" 2011 imac? I am not looking for a gaming rig, just enough to run graphics for web browsing, regular light usage.

I am thinking that replacing it with the lower power M1 part with M2 cooling will allow the video card to last?

I don't think it will last, its more like a construction issue. This series of amd cards are just sh*t... Cheapest option is a k2000m, you can get that around $60 from eBay and it has a bit more performance than the 6770m.

The Dell K3000M looks to be compatible as well apparently. Oh wait, never mind, no metal support. Yeah, looks like the K2000M seems to be the cheapest option around.

I resurrected a dead 2011 27" mac using a 765 video card. Now I want to put Mojave on it.
I have made a partition for it on the SSD, and installed the Mojave installer and dosdude's tool on a USB drive. I also understand I have to uncheck legacy video patch, and will have to probably fix audio/wifi kexts. My problem, stupid as it may be, is how to boot to the USB drive to do the Mojave install, as I can't boot to startup manager, apparently. Can someone help me over this hump?

I thought if you hold the option key and then select the USB drive on the opening screen that would boot into the installer. After that is done, do the same again and apply the patch. Third boot should be the last. Also note that updating may break the system and you will have to go turn off SIP using the USB again.

oddly enough, after running in safe mode for several hours yesterday and doing a time machine backup, I restarted the machine and it is working perfectly again.. I did install a fan speed controller to help keep things cooler.. but I do suspect this issue will occur again soon... likely very soon.

I am not looking for the cheapest option, I just don't need a high performance card as this is not for gaming..

Wondering if this Nvidia 765 will be appropriate?

When I try to use OPTION to run the startup manager, all I get is a blank screen. My understanding is that was normal. I guess I can try and navigate it blindly?

Same here. I did updated from High Sierra to Mojave with the AMD Card (it never booted into Mojave). I have replaced the card for a new Nvidia GTX770 and now I get a blank screen. I'heard sounds when I click buttons on the keyboard, so I guess it is not dead, but the screen shows nothing. I'm going yo try to buy a MiniDP to HDMI adapter and try with an external monitor.

If it doesn't work, then I'll try to install a fresh patched version in the iMac's SSD plugged to my MacBook Air.

I don't know if I should have installed any drivers

Did you keep a High Sierra partition on it? From what I understand you have to do that so you can go back and apply the DOSDUDE patches, as it cannot boot Mojave until that is done. You should be able to boot back into it using CMD-OPT-P-R.

make sure you deselect legacy video patch with the mojave patcher..
this is important, when selected (by default) I think it could mess up your nvidia card with Mojave.
a new fresh install, withouth this amd patch is best then I think..

No, I didn't. I have installed a fresh copy of High Sierra with the AMD card. Thanks for the tip, I will try again tomorrow.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that I selected it. Anyway, in the case that I would prefer to stay in High Sierra, the Nvidia card should be recognized without any kind of patch or modification?

Tomorrow I will try to boot my High Sierra with the Nvidia card to see if, at least, the third led on the motherboard lights up.

well as far as I know, these nvidia kepler cards, all work fine with High Sierra withouth need of any patches or any software mods needed.
this is also the same for Mojave.
And as far as I know third led on the logic board will never light up, since there is no Apple EFI compatible firmware on these Dell/Alienware Nvidia cards.
iMac display should light up when macOS is loaded, you will see it your self.. ;)
