I'm not buying the new iMac until it ships with lion pre-installed .. Also that gives apple time to rectify any hardware/software issues that may arise as is the case with most new machines ....

I guess you're not getting a new iMac then!

It won't be that much different maybe a bug or 2 that will probably won't even hit performance or anything, just don't think there is something magical with pre-installed

Any chance of HDMI input?

Wouldn't count on it.
Then Apple needs to change the enclosure, providing a hole for HDMI.
If the iMac will have a new design (which is for next year probably), then there could be a small change, but it's not the Apple-way of thinking. The upcoming iMac will probably have the same design, and therefore the same enclosure because it's cheaper to keep using it. Just like they've done with the Macbooks: Gave the Thunderbolt port the same dimensions as the mini-displayport so they didn't needed to change the enclosure, which is cheaper!

We will see Thunderbolt instead of mini-displayport. The current 27" iMac has mini-displayport input, and with a HDMI-to-Mini-displayport converter you could attach an HDMI-device. With the new iMac with Thunderbolt, you can keep using the HDMI-to-Mini-displayport converter to attach an HDMI device. Current iMac only supports 720p and 1440p input, I do hope with this refresh it also accepts 1080p input. Would be heavenly!

I also hope new HDMI-to-Thunderbolt converters will come, which could use the Tunderbolt's power. Current HDMI-to-Mini-displayport converters still need a seperate power source (USB (Belkin) or power outlet)

Thanks Chris,

Am I the only one who thinks it is a bit strange not to follow industry standards at all?

HDMI-TB converters should appear within a couple of years, when/if TB gains some market... :p

Why, :apple:, why make everything just a little bit harder than they have to be?

Thunderbolt All around!

Wow guys, I feel honored by all the views and thoughtful replies, makes me wish I had worked a lot harder on my first forum submission!

All macs going forward are going to sport one or more Thunderbolt ports, since they are all now using mini DisplayPort this is a relatively simple update that makes sense.

But another thing I just realized is that in addition to all the new computers, Apple will want to spread the use of Thunderbolt to other peripherals, someone allready mentioned the tv since it will be connected to tvs it's not completely out of the question that some manufacturers will sport Thunderbolt ports maybe in conjunction with Airplay (although that would be redundant)

More to the point thought is the Time Capsule, Airport Extreme and less likely the numpad keyboard.

The Time Capsule would be an obvious candidate, making it much faster to do first wired backup and in the event of harddisk failure, making it very fast and efficient to do a full restore, while both the Time Capsule and the Airport Extreme will retain a single USB port (mainly for wireless printing) It will probably exchange one of the ethernet ports with a Thunderbolt and adding another (they're small), with one of the reasons not to change them all to Thunderbolt, that it's limited to 3 meter wires, it should still be faster to connect to a Thunderbolt connected harddisk over a Gigabit Ethernet connected Airport Express than a USB connected harddisk. Obviously if the Airport is located close to the computer, you'd prefer connecting it by Thunderbolt. They could also change all but the external Ethernet ports with Thunderbolt and provide cheap adapters to USB and Ethernet, although that would probably become messy...

The keyboard would be unlikely however, partly because people wouldn't want their thunderbolts in the front, but also because you mainly connect ipods and other peripherals to the keyboard and all these are unlikely to change to Thunderbolt unless Thunderbolt overtakes USB (which would be great since it's smaller in both width and height (but the connectors seems to be very long)

All the iDevices could also become compatible with Thunderbolt, especially if the get the long connector shortened, it would have to remain compatible with USB though. This could in fact be very important for Apple since it would allow them to sync much much faster than today, giving both PC users and non-Thunderbolt apple owners an incentive to upgrade.

Time Capsule with Thunderbolt

I just received this Thunderbolt equipped Time Machine from someone calling himself "Pixelmator" ;)

Please pay attention to the really hard to forge reflection in the bottom, that proves it's not 'shopped!

It's not hard to make a reflection in photoshop or illustrator, looks fake to me as the thunderbolt text is very squashed and looks out of place, looks unproffessional

As long as its not an external refresh, with new LED screens and what not, shouldn't be any hardware defects.

of course this is 'shopped. look at the inputs zoomed in, they're identical down to the pixels, as are the thunderbolt logos. that to me shouts copy+paste.

Even the 2 ethernet ports would confirm this is shopped, they wouldn't sell a single Airport, which is a router, which only has 2 ethernet ports! Only 1 port extra that is! Should have 4 ethernet ports, 3 atleast like it has now.

A new Airport and Time Capsule would be welcome! They haven't been updated quite a while, and in terms of speed, USB-speed, QOS,... its still needs alot of improvements. Thunderbolt on the Airport/Time capsule could be an interesting upgrade, but will it come?

Thunderbolt and Time Capsule are meant to be together, USB 2.0 vs Thunderbolt, yeah uh...

Well to be fair the ethernet ports are also pixel identical as far as I can tell.

Jeez people I didn't think in a million years a cheap mockup would gather this much attention, have none of you tried pixelmator? It's brilliant, and now it's available on the Mac App store, I could finally pay for it easily

I think I'm gonna enjoy making cheap <del>'shopped</del> 'mated mockups of various speculative future apple products!

So which is everyone else thinking? April or May?
Personally i'm thinking towards the end of this month.

I'll be checking the online store every Tuesday! =]
Getting the 27inch ultimate when it's released.

I just returned my iMac 27 Ultimate and would have ordered the upcoming iMac 27 SB Ultimate if not for all the problems I've read about recently with the iMacs - blurry smokey screen from overheating and dust inside the cabinet, clicking noisy HDD's (I ordered mine with a 256 SSD + 2 TB HDD internal) and also problems with dust in the fans - so if I was to buy an iMac I would of had to void the Apple Seal and remove the 27" glass and LED panel at least once a year - and since I pay a premium for an iMac compared to other alternatives I really don't think you should design a home based computer unit where changing the HDD and dusting off the interior is more complicated than in a MacBook pro laptop :(

But I know ; I know - 95% of all the iMac users don't even know what a HDD is and Apple sell lots and lots of iMacs to these kind of folks

But I know for sure, that the average iMac owner after a year would like to be able to dust the interior in the iMac clean from dust and also would like to be able to change the HDD if it has started to produce clicking noises - instead of having to lug a 27" monster to and from their home :)

I just purchased a 17" MacBook Pro Ultimate instead and an external ACD 27" along with a wireless Mac keyboard, a Magical Dusted TrackPad and the Magic Mouse - finally bought the Adobe Premium Package for Mac with a GREAT student discount (1/4 of the original price) - so I hope this will run well :apple:  :apple:

I've bin searching around on forums, and couldn't find any qualified guesses concerning the hardware setup for the next iMac, so i've compared the current macbook pros with the hardware of the competition, and added the must have SSD bootdisk we've heard so many rumors about, and i just wanted to share my findings.. This is again only speculations, and i would like to hear your say :)
