The 6970 has plenty of benchmarks. The only difference is a 100MHz faster core clock speed, it's got some pretty nice speeds though. Here's the full chart: chart

Don't forget to check the resolutions of the machines getting x FPS, the 15" MBP can have 1400x900 or 1680x1050, the 17" 1920x1200.

Wow that chart has a lot of GPUs! The 6970 looks great though.

Bro,
any idea about the latency TB will introduce? You know, what I intend to do is to boot from an SSD Raid Array connected via TB to circumvent Apples huge markup on internal SSDs. They just charge too much for the midlevel SSDs they provide. Please let me know what you think.

Take care, Vince

I know I'm jumping in late here, but wanted to let you know that, at present, you can't boot a Mac via Thunderbolt. I'm sure that will change over time, and it does support Target Disk Mode at present, but don't make too many plans based on being able to boot from external Thunderbolt devices just yet.

Any speculation on potential release date for the new iMacs yet?

I've been itching to get one for over a year, but I'm glad I waited.. having seen the significant bumps to the MacBook Pro, I'm optimistic for the potential iMac spec bump, which would be worth the wait.

Im waiting for the big news too! though i cant say whether i should get the new refreshed imac, considering i love my mac mini so much!

I cant tell you how many times I've "built" one online and was about to order it, but stopped just short of hitting the submit button... sometimes its fun just to build it online. Im ready to buy one now (my first Mac ever) and want to Quad Core i5 with the flash memory for the OS... but it seems they will release it with the Lion OS...

February was MBP month, this month its iPad 2, so I would predict we will start seeing rumors in April with a release late April or in May.

Why?

It's unrealistic that Apple will release a big product like Lion OSX and at the same time release a hardware refresh. If they really wanna get the best out of the market they will release the iMac prior to the Lion OSX and get everyone "hungry" for the OSX update.

So that's a careful speculation of what is gonna happen :) I myself is keeping an eye on the iMac hardware refresh.

Just heard that new iMacs are on there way to the US. No major cosmetic changes but have added Thunderbolt and Sandy Bridge.
Due for possible release end of April or beginnning of May.

I hope they also upgrade the GPU?? Would be a shame if they didn't!
I also hope support for 1920x1080 input by the mini-displayport... it's limited to 1280x720 or native nowadays...

Yeah GPUs are what I'm more interested in. Over at the tonymacx86 site they found ATI Radeon HD 6xxx support in 10.6.7, so here's hoping that the new iMacs have the option for a sweet GPU.

whos brian thong lol? doesnt sound like a reliable source

Brian Tong is an editor for CNet. So, supposedly he would have reliable sources. But then again, major news sites have tried the Apple prediction game before, sometimes with reliable sources, and have failed, so who knows.

I hope that top-of-the-line spec will not be exclusive to the 27", but available in the 21" as well; or whatever the display sizes may be.

And wishing for a 512GB SSD option, with or without the extra internal HDD.

Return or not to return

I just bought one and its still unopened waiting to get stuff transfered from my desktop. Should I delay and return it and wait? Errrr. What could possible new stats be? How much of an upgrade will new one be?

Bring back and wait if you can......You will see significant performance with the new chipset and Thunderbolt.

Huge the t-bolt option alone is worth the return. The t-bolt option will allow you to have an internal hdd failure and not lose more then a few minutes time. It will allow a fast ssd external to be your boot drive.

This would be a killer device for your iMac. Now if you don't want this keep the machine you have.

Depends... do you a need a new computer now, or can you hold out for an update that might not come until July? Does the current iMac have enough power to do what you need it to do? You will see about a 30% bump in overall benchmark performance, maybe a little more and maybe a little less. Real world, that will only matter if you are performing tasks that will stress your current iMac to the max.

Personally, I am waiting for the refresh to get my iMac because I can wait as long as it takes, and we are really close to a refresh. If I didn't already have a MBP I wouldn't be waiting, since I will never get close to fully stressing an iMac, I just want to wait so that I can win the pissing contest for the next 9 months instead of a couple.

I just want to know if with the upgrade I will get more for the same money. The one in the box is the 21.5 monitor, and 1TB HD. Will any of that be upgraded? I want got performance for music, video and pictures editing.

Not likely, only the CPU and GPU will be upgraded, plus they will add the lightning bolt connection capability (think REALLY fast USB connection for connecting an external hard drive, or other device).
