I disagree. I believe the absolutely will be a touch screen imac...but not in the current form factor. I'd bet my life on it. All one needs to do is note that 10.7 is the beginning of OSX and iOS merging.....a trend that will continue until there is only one OS powering everything apple makes. It only makes sense.

I remember seeing a rendering, possibly a patent note about the imac sliding down to the same incline as a keyboard.....

I think a touchscreen on a home computer is obsurd and also a stupid idea. I have stated this opinion for years. Why would anyone want to lift their arm and touch all over a huge 27" screen over just moving a mouse one inch in either direction. It really is a stupid idea that I don't think will go far in the market. Right now it's all about the cool/new factor and nothing else.

You do understand that Apple has thousands of patents, which most have never seen the daylight, right?

absolutely. And when Jobs said no touch screen imacs as the ergonomics are all wrong he is 100% right, but down the road I bet the ergonomics will change and touchscreen will be a reality. 2012? nope, maybe 2015 or 2016.

I don't know why everyones so obsessed with a touch screen imac.. Whats the point?? A big ass iPad with OSX?

The whole point of having an imac is to do serious work that you can't do on an iPad with touch based controls. If you add touch screen to an iMac then it doesn't do good at anything. It won't have the portability of an iPad, and its hard to do anything serious with touch based controls.

Pointless IMO.

I would like it if it could be used as a huge tablet, but, I don't know much about how tablets or touch screens work so don't know if it's possible to make it work well.

Otherwise, yeah, i think it's pretty pointless.

Are you sure there are no points of having touch screen on iMac?
It's not only for fun and play

iMac with touch screen can act as giant Wacom screen, as in Wacom Cyntiq. Apple can make their own pen and tips, so you can work on your iMac naturally. Drawing, editing, design .. right on the top of the screen. You can forget that $#!TTY magic trackpad

It's not giant iPad .. it's a giant killer with 1440p display and touch screen for superb workflow. It's much more serious than what you said with "touch based controls". Imagine that

Lets see how long you like working with your arm raised in the air.

exactly. i was thinking of the cintiq wacom tablet/screen, too. except bigger! this hypothetical touchscreen imac can also be tilted far enough so it can almost be flat to the table, if one prefers to work like that. and come with a pen along with the mouse and keyboard. i'd buy one in a jiffy if the price stays the same as current imacs.

Most people are thinking of a touch screen iMac in the wrong position... Let me elaborate...People think of it as it is right now standing face to face with you and then having to reach over with your arm and touch the screen. When I think touch screen iMac I think about the 27 inch screen but laying down on a flat surface. Comparable to writing a paper or reading a book in a class or even at a desk. This way you do not need to reach up and over but instead you can keep your arms low and just drag them back and forth over the screen. It would only be logical that these "desk-top" screens also have a tilt ability to put the screen at an angle to reduce strain on the neck from looking down. This is what I would do to make the most convenient and logical iMac touch screen. Apple you can reach me if you'd like to elaborate on my idea. :)

If they could incorporate the pressure sensitive wacom technology into the iMac with a pen, i could see it becoming some what useful. However, a 21" Cintiq is $2000. That plus the current iMac would come down to $4000+

Anything short of that with just a touch screen found on the iPhone or iPad would not be very useful considering its running osx instead of ios. And honestly what would you do with a 27" touch screen? Even if the screen was laid down flat on the table, my arm would still be tired after 20minutes of use cuz i have to move across the huge screen too much.

I've tried the touch screen all in ons in bestbuy (hp and acer). They are fun for about 10minutes, before you start to miss your keyboard and mouse. I love the touchpad they have right now for macs (laptops and desktops). My hand can stay in one place while a few moves with my fingers can control the whole computer. I don't see any point going beyond that at this point. Maybe in the distant future when they start to merge ios with osx, then i could see some use of an actual touch screen computer.

Have you seen a 21" Cintiq? You don't use it with your arm in the air.. Obviously if Apple were to go and do something like that you'd be able to tilt it the way you can with a Cintiq.

There have been rumors of a newer entry level machine? How about this. they take the current 21" i3 machine and keep it pretty much as is, but drop the price to $999 and then $1199 for an i5.

Then they bring back the 24" i7 at 1499. that's what I'd like to see anyway.

There is only one flaw with your design. You can only have it one way, either a comfortable arm or a comfortable neck.

This will be my first post on these forums, so hi everybody :)

Im in the market for buying an iMac, but can't decide if I should wait or just buy it now. I have sold my very powerfull Windows machine to buy an iMac, but it seems that there aren't any rumors about a new iMac. It will be the 27" with the CPU upgrade - will buy aftermarket memory upgrade myself.

So wait or hit the market now?

This can give some indication... https://buyersguide.macrumors.com//#iMac Interested to hear what others think too. I'm predicting a new model in August with Lion, but I'd say there could be an update before then. What do others think?

This is a practical thought. With the recent updates to the MBP lineup though, I'd hate to see the entry level iMac punished with integrated Intel video. If a dedicated video solution from ATi comes at that price, it would be a bargain.

I myself long waiting for the return of the 24" model, may just cave in and buy the current 21" or a ACD for use with my 13" MacBook Pro.

I'm hoping for a couple month's earlier, hopefully May or June. It seems like they tend to update things on around 10-11 month cycle, so these months fit the routine. I would hope that Apple would want to upgrade the iMac's sooner rather than later to get Thunderbolt included. And considering how powerful the new MBP's are, it can't be good for sales to have a desktop that looks dated in comparison.

And I would love a 24" iMac again! The 21" is just a bit too small, but I don't want to have to fork over $2k for something larger.

I'd also like to see them return to the iLamp body style! *dreaming*
