Well the reason they dropped the iMac G3 design was because of the flatscreen technology... Not too sure about the iMac G4 design, perhaps it was too radical and not practical or something? Anyway, the current design looks good and seems to work, so there's no rush to change it until they think up something that is better than the current one.

here thats what i mean with evolution only

the last models since the iMac G5 look the same apart from size /color, i dont mean its a horrible design now , i find the color combination black /silver ..is just a bit to... conservative and looks a bit unfriendly..come on apple i understand anodizing the alu case is a bit tricky in mass production , but getting other colors for the glass frame cant be that tricky ..a white one please , just looks more friendly , for me it looks like the eyes of a drug addict to see that black screen surround .. and no having to use a permant marker and color it myself white is not really what i have in mind if i buy a new computer

ColorWare? :p

Optical media is on the sink no matter what you say. Removal of it in the Macs will help push the process along a big :) Besides, Apple isn't going to put in Blu-Ray now, the want you to buy your media from THEM.

And externals, I mean, a USB powered external wouldn't be THAT bad on a desktop, cmon'.

Meh ... i dont think so .. Physical media will always remain exist in the future. Physical media has better value to me. When i want to re-watch my movie, i'll just insert them to my BD player, just sit tight and enjoy. Or even better you can exchange or borrow it to your friends/family

While having digital content, you will mess with DRM. You just can play your movie on one computer bla bla bla .. That sounds rubbish to me

Physical media will remain .. until we use digital form of money. No more papers, just digital number on top right of the screen. Do you want that as your economical future? So that you can lose all your digital money due to virus, malware or the money server is down. And then you can re-download your money if you accidentally lose them.

Are we thinking they'll be in the 2012 refresh then? ;)

Nah. Ivy Bridge will most likely bring 6-core CPUs to mainstream sockets and chipsets, so 2012 iMac might go 6-core. Those CPUs coming in late 2011 are meant for high-end desktops and workstations, i.e. Mac Pro stuff.

Apart from the MacBook they're using that theme with pretty much all their Macs. There must be a reason why it hasn't changed... Perhaps the majority of people simply like it?

I'm going to be getting the new iMac shortly after it comes out. I would really like a redesign, but that being said I have the very first intel iMac(1.83 Ghz CD and ATI x1600 video card.)

I've never had an problems with it and would really feel a HUGE jump in performance with anything. I will miss my matte screen though. However 17" is a bit small by today's standards.

Can't wait!

I've got a 21.5 inch one and its great. Even though its only 21.5" it seems like at least 24"...

speculation of an all glass front will make the imac look like a giant ipad, which i think is not a bad direction. in fact, here it is. available in 2 colors.

Based on what? Intel G3s will be out soon and it is expected that they carry a noticeable price cut. 512GB Crucial C400 will be 825$ while all current 512GB SSDs cost more than a grand. Prices are going down all the time.

Bro,
any idea about the latency TB will introduce? You know, what I intend to do is to boot from an SSD Raid Array connected via TB to circumvent Apples huge markup on internal SSDs. They just charge too much for the midlevel SSDs they provide. Please let me know what you think.

Take care, Vince

Well, TB is based on PCIe which has very low latency. I haven't seen any documents about latency but seeing that the same cable provides video, the latency should be extremely small as otherwise you would notice it. Keeping the cable length as short as possible will help too.

I've seen numbers stating "7 ns" somewhere, can't find the link though. If these numbers are correct, TB's latency is indeed extremely low.

I'm using the same computer for the same purpose. It still performs most duties but has failed bouncing audio in Pro Tools recently. I'd like to replace it but I'm waiting for a redesign rather than just a spec bump.

Maybe Logic, being made by Apple, is slightly more efficient then as it's being run on Apple hardware? That might give some of the fanboy forum posters on Engadget some ammo :p

It's no mean feat though, I had this discussion with a mate a couple of days ago. It goes to show that, whilst it's nice to have the best spec, it's not always necessary.

We'll probably see an iMac design refresh in 2012 when the rumoured MacBook Pro redesign comes out. Makes sense they'd change them all as one or not at all.

Hah. I'm looking to get the 2011 iMac whatever specs it comes out with cuz I have an early 2010 model, which is getting slower and slower :roll eyes: anyway... what I think Apple should do is ditch the optical drive, lower the price of the iMac to be [insert price of an external optical drive here] less than it was. That, and all the specs Hellhammer listed (they sound pretty reasonable).

There's zero chance that the new iMacs will have a touchscreen. It's terribly impractical.

This is shaping up to by one of the biggest upgrades of the last few years. The Sandy Bridge CPUs appear very strong improvements and Thunderbolt will give the new iMacs many more years of service and much needed flexibility. Even FW800 was getting slow. Of course, next year there's South Islands but even the current crop of GPUs is none too shabby. I'll probably wait until next year to buy (I need at least 2, maybe 3) but I will rest easy from the next update forward.

I have the same game plan concerning SSD's when I buy a new iMac. Thankfully, TB may put my want for a Mac Pro to rest.

i thought so, too. until i saw the demo for Sony's NGP. the guy was using analog controls in conjunction with the touch screen.

To end the discussion once and for all: there isn't going to come a touchscreen on the iMac!! Please watch the Apple Events videos!!

Please... people start arguing here again and again about a touchscreen but Jobs already confirmed during the october 2010 event there isn't going to come a touchscreen on the Macs!

For the people who don't know their events ;) just watch it:
http://www.apple.com/apple-events/october-2010/

start watching at 56:30... then you'll hear Steve Jobs telling it himself

Only if the iMac will be able to place horizontally, it could be having a touchscreen. But when you use it horizontally, it's practically a big iPad which you can't take with you... What's the use of that? Just buy an iPad if you want touchscreen?

He also said no one wants video on an Ipod among other things that Apple eventually did.

I could see a Touchscreen on an iMac if it was only for an iOS-like interface overlay (on top of OSX) that allowed you to do a limited amount of functionality.

The main purpose would be for quick and easy access for when you didn't need to any serious/long-term access to your computer.

Granted I have my iMac up high so I can stand and use it or sit on a bar stool and use it. So I could just see walking up to it to and using a touchscreen to quickly look up some information.

Don't get me wrong. I don't expect one nor do I really want one. I was just imagining where it could make some sense.
