You obviously have never taken an iMac to pieces... no way is that "chin" going to disappear fast.

All you stuff is mere fantasy but for Thunderbolt which will mean fluck all to most people

Pretty sure the "chin" houses fans that push the heat to the slit in the top. Heat rises...makes sense. That, and I've heard..."the fans in the bottom of the 27 inch will keep that ***** cool when you're pushing [insert Creative Suite program name here] to the limit". Three fans in the 27 inch one in the 21 inch.

What's funny...last year, I was stoked to get an iMac...I had the cash ready...and literally...that same day, moments before I checked out with my costly machine...the new iMacs dropped. I quickly decided to hold off on buying. I've been computer-less since, but I like to see it as an exercise in self control.

The i7's desktops are too hot for the iMac it seems.
The i7's in the Macbook Pro's must be smiler in speed to the desktop i5"s?:)

i7-2600 has TDP of 95W and thus would fit fine in the 27" iMac (I'm pretty sure Apple will use this in the high-end). There is also Core i7-2600S with TDP of 65W and it would fit in 21.5" too but I doubt Apple will use that (they want to force people to buy more expensive 27").

MBPs use mobile CPUs with TDPs of 35W (dual core) and 45W (quad core) and they are nowhere near as fast as the desktop chips. Even the slowest quad core SB i5 is faster than the fastest mobile i7.

Another use for ThunberBolt

I've heard (read: dreamt up in my sleep deprived state) that apart from hooking up CinemaDisplays, you'll now be able to connect two or more iMac's using ThunderBolt, not just using one machine as a dum display, but getting access to the harddisk, and even the processors and ram, essentially letting you hook up an unlimited number of machines for heavy 3D image processing late at night when no one else is using the computer lab, also awesome for playing Chrysis or other heavy games on full using as many iMac's as needed as both screens and cpu's for the heavy lifting.

You'll also be able to take advantage of that MacBook Pro, or vice versa use the iMac's spare cycles when the girlfriend is browsing, playing or writing. When the Mac Pro is updated you'll also be able to hook up that for a big extra boost.

Is it possible due to cost??

For the very reason you state I cannot see this happening yet. Quite a different thing for a screen the size of an iPhone but astronomically expensive for a desktop computer screen with a real estate of 21"-27". Maybe in the future we'd see it rolled out starting on laptop screens?

Laugh if you must, but that's probably what 90% of the people reading these forums are going to use their new iMac for.

On the other hand, probably more than 90% of the people reading these forums are going to use their iMac for different things. (as well as, perhaps, but still)

Making a trip to Japan (Okinawa) in May & back in June...
My daughter said that they sold Apple in the PX on the base (Kadena AFB)...
Not sure of pricing?
Also being able to carry back on our return flights (carry-on)...
May consider it if I could save some bucks...
Anyway will be able to play with the new iMac at the PX...:D

is it to late for the refresh this week?

not really payed much attention in the past, so not sure what times these things usually happen.

UK Time btw

anything is possible, of course, but to give you a reference, the MacbookPro refresh happened about 3 hours ago on it's refresh date.

Probably next week. :(

My 17 incher went as a carry on just fine, I used an ilugger case. Worked great.

MBP's were updated on a thursday I weren't they?

you're right actually. somehow I've looked back at that refresh announcement post probably 5-10 times (looking for patterns and such with our current iMac rumors) without noticing it was on a Thursday. fail

Then we had about a week of notice from Macrumors, doubt it will be this Thursday.

Looking at various stores online, some of them have hardly any or no imacs in stock, such as Amazon.

The UK apple store has gone to 'shipped in 2 business days' but its probably due to the 4 day weekend here at the minute?

No, even if it's a long weekend (which it is here in Australia) they don't change the shipping times, even if it does take a little bit longer to get to you..
Hopefully signs of a refresh soon :)!
