Does that mean we can confirm that Apple is replacing key caps now to solve the problem?
According to what I saw underneath, I think replacing the keycap wont change anything except if they pull up the thing that do the pressure...

I have a question for all, do the keycaps in the middle of the macbook like hjk... resonate more than the other ones on the sides...?

I feel like this issue made me a bit too much paranoid, I am always testing trying to spot a difference in the noise....

Mine seem randomly resonant and pitched, if I really listen, which I only do at times like this.

Hmmm... I don't know if it's a real issue or if it's the butterfly which is like this.
I wonder if we can get a keyboard with a perfect equal noise for each keycap?

Probably not on this model, but maybe on an upcoming one. In regular typing I don't notice the difference, it's only when I stop and focus on it. But mine's not as clicky as some.

Just stoped by a Best Buy and tried the 15" 2016 MacBook Pro and lo and behold numerous keys, I would say almost half, made the high pitch sound I have seen or heard in the videos here in this thread. The machine was not really hot but a bit warm since it was just running the demo they always have on constantly.

I have been concerned with the sound and feel of this keyboard since day one but now even more so. Otherwise looking at it and comparing to the 2015 model the slimness, lightness and display is really a step above. However the keyboard I would sooo prefer the old one. Only thing holding me back right now is the keyboard or I would have ordered the 2016 to replace my old MacBook Air.

I was told it is part of the "kit" they use to fix this issue. Whatever that means.

So I got my NEW MacBook back from the Apple Store, they applied the "fix" or shim and new keycaps. Well, a handful of keys still have the problem. I've called the senior support rep and left a message, I expect a call back tomorrow. I'm going to ask for a replacement once the next series of MacBooks are released. They should be out in the next 2-3 months I would guess. Hopefully they will have reengineered the keyboard by then. I can't go back to my old machine as I don't have it, so since this is in fact an Apple engineering/design/manufacturing issue with NEW machines, I think we all deserve a simple exchange for the next generation model. I'm done bringing this to the store and mailing off to the depot for repair (and having it damaged). I can't believe Apple is doing this to customers.

My senior adviser left me a voicemail and is pulling some additional resources to investigate the issue and get direction. Since Apple has an official fix for this issue, they have in fact recognized it which is a good thing. Unfortunately this fix doesn't resolve the issue completely. I don't think they understand the scope of this issue, it really requires a redesign of the top case (keyboard/track pad components). I wouldn't be surprised if the next revision coming out later this year has a modified design.

Stay tuned...

New one arrived from Apple today. Having a similar issue intermittently with the H and K keys. Happens again when it's very warm, usually either running After Effects or Ableton Live.

What should I do? Seems like an issue with the design in general, so I don't want to bother replacing the thing again.

You mean those keys get extra-clicky? You can arrange to have that fixed at the Apple Store with the shim kit, but it may well happen with other keys too later.

My recent experience with the shim kit is it doesn't work or was not applied correctly. The keys that were worked on still have the issue and they now sound worse when they are not "warm". The keyboard is simply a mess for a $3k laptop. Waiting for guidance from my senior adviser.

That's not good. There was success attributed to the repair earlier. It may be a matter of how well it's done.

I have been keeping up with events on this thread with some sadness. I have not re-ordered, given some of the comments by the people on here, and will probably have to wait for the next revision in the hope that they will address this defect, although I fear that they won't in their quest to keep MacBooks thin. It is appalling that people are getting several new machines in a row with this issue and that they come back from repairs with the problem either persisting or affecting a new set of keys.

I have toyed with the idea of a Surface Book, but having tried the one with the performance base, I found it to be a nice machine burdened with a less-than-great operating system: scaling issues abound, poor email programs and integration with Google Apps, and inferior touchpad experience, to name but a few.

I am disappointed that Apple seem to be giving such low priority, in terms of usability and QA, to the machines that run Mac OS (presumably the machines that developers use to create the apps Apple make so much money from). I hope that this changes, or I will have no option but to go down the Windows route as my current Mac hardware approaches obsolescence.

I think the June event will be a good indication just how important this issue has become with Apple. I'm not talking just about the keyboard issues but all the other issues surrounding the 2016 MBP.

If Apple throws in a minor update come June it will show (to some extent) that Apple is looking to address some issues in both user base and profitability. We all know Apple is not going to admit to rushing out a product and missing the mark in certain areas of that product, however if they update the line in June it will indicate something was amiss inside the Apple camp since mid year updates are not a common occurrence with Apple on the MBP. The customers have spoken in the amount of returns that have happened and as the saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Just wanted to give my experiences with this issue:

I bought a refurbished October 2016 style MacBook Pro 13" base model with function keys (MLL42LL/A new, FLL42LL/A refurbished) last week from Apple's website and had it shipped to me in Canada. The laptop was totally pristine, especially the screen and outer case. Definitely not a "used" level product. But within a couple hours of use with streaming video going, the snapping key sound began to appear. At first it was just keys on home row like F and S. I started testing it under a heavier load and more keys began to do it all over the board. Some keys would reliably make the snapping noise 90% of the time and others as low as 10% of the time. That was when I found this thread!

I contacted Apple through the chat support and they were excellent. They booked me a service appointment at an Apple authorized retailer in an effort to get it looked at quickly. When I visited that retailer, the service guy had heard of this problem and had fixed it, but would need to order the replacement parts from Apple ("top case" is the term he used). He suggested I would be better off going to the Apple Store in town and seeing if they would just do a straight swap for a different machine.

At the Apple Store, the service tech was very nice and candid and suggested that the best way to get rid of the keyboard snapping noise would be to return the laptop and buy a similarly priced refurbished MacBook Pro from the previous series, like something in the style of MF839*/A, MF840*/A, or MF841*/A. She described the problem as an unintended feature of the new keyboard design, and any other model I chose in the current range would likely have the same unintended feature. I appreciated the honesty. Unfortunately, being a refurbished product that was shipped from the US, they weren't able to return or exchange the laptop for me right at the store. The laptop is heading back to Apple.

So it's as I suspected. There is a significant risk that any machine purchased with this new keyboard has this issue. That is the only explanation, statistically, for so many of us getting one replacement after another that has this problem. It is good that Apple finally seem to have recognised it, even though they haven't publicly acknowledged it.

It also shows how superficial reviews are, in that none of them have come across this issue.

Not great for those people that have been waiting for some time for an upgrade.

Just spoke with my senior adviser again. I am sending back the advanced replacement MBP and they will be sending me ANOTHER replacement to see if that one is fixed. If it isn't, I have the option of waiting for a spec bump/revision (possibly in June @ WWDC) for an exchange with the new model. Crazy crazy.

I quite agree. Crazy.

Let us know how you get on with the new machine.

Do people here think that Apple might release a minor upgrade to the MacBook Pro at the WWDC in June? I know it's pure speculation, but I'm looking for any glimmer of hope that they might address this ridiculous state of affairs with the keyboard :)

If there is any chance of a spec bump or redesign it would be at WWDC. Sometimes they don't even mention it, the new specs just show up on the website. The support person I am working with is trying to get more information but for the moment it seems Apple is simply sweeping this under the rug. My guess is close to 100% of MBPs are affected but unless you are a power user and the processor heats up the keyboard, you will never notice this issue. Not to mention the majority of people don't notice these sounds or if they do, they don't care enough to contact Apple about it.

Has somebody tried This?

I'm sure it could work and probably provides the best explanation of what the "issue" is. I provided this to video to Apple and they reviewed it. I'd be cautions about doing this type of surgery on a $3k laptop though, Apple needs to fix this. I'll be waiting for my 2nd replacement and go from there.

This is terrible. Not going near this machine until it hits v2.

Question: did the 12" Macbook have this issue?

Has anyone in this thread received a replacement that was absent the noise? It is so disappointing to see to many people trying and wasting time, being hopeful that their replacements will solve an issue coming from a design flaw.
