My thoughts exactly. People who just do casual browsing, edit documents and what not won't even notice it.

When I got my mbp I went to a swift convention, very loud, so I didn't even notice. Then for about another week I barely used the thing and it wasn't until I got back from vacations that I notice the issue. And only because I started working on it.

Doing 2, 3 builds in a row with a big xcode project is more than enough to warm it to the point of that annoying click sound. I do hundreds of builds in my workflow every day, so you can imagine the frustration... :\
Believe it or not, I think there are many people who use their MBP under load who will still notice notice the issue. It is subtle unless you know what to look for, or know that it is a known problem.

I've had my MBP since January and just noticed three sticky keys last week.

If you're not looking for the issue, it's easy to miss. Now I have to decide if it's worth going to the Apple Store for.

I think this is a sorry state of affairs :(

To put up with something as its better the devil you know scenario or be a discerning customer on a $3k laptop is a shame

Sure if it was some unbranded cheap import but this is suppose to be a premium product

My sympathies and best of luck on whatever you decide :)

I just did a quick test on four 2017 MacBook pros in the Apple Store. I ran prime95 on the three 13s and prime95 + Unigine heaven on the 15. The non touch bar 13 had at least two loud clicky keys. The other three (two touch bar 13s and one 15) seemed ok. I only tested the touch bar 13s for five minutes though.

I have to disagree. It's not subtle at all in my experience.

My machine runs hot by default, so maybe that's the reason. But every time I press one of the affected keys, I notice it really well.

Definitely not a subtle issue, you'd notice it.

As an update I had mine replaced and they have definitely altered the keyboard, the current one does not suffer from the issue, I have a slightly loose h key but may live with that.

Get it replaced, you'll see it's fixed, either that or it was a serious QC issue.

The only thing is it's my main Mac so I can't go without it for long. What's been the average turn around time for this Repair? (I haven't been keeping up with this thread as I thought I didn't have this issue)

When Apple wanted to replace keyboard because of a faulty "d" key, I was quoted 3-5 day turnaround. I was still within the 14 days so opted to replace the machine instead.

Updating everyone... after several months back and forth with my 2016 MBP TB, Apple damaging my system in the repair depot and a top case repair that didn't fix the issue, I was able to get a 2017 advanced replacement. The proc and GPU are upgraded and the keyboard as well.

Here is my basic review of the 2017 model compared to the 2016.

* Keyboard control/option keys have additional logos on them, sort of strange but they are there.
* Keyboard does feel different, more uniform with the presses.
* When the system is COLD, the spacebar sounds a little different and has a metallic click to it, very subtle and not loud. Once warm it goes away.
* The keyboard does NOT have any loud popping sounds. I have let this thing run pegged for about an hr and heated it up significantly. No clicks!!!
* The fingerprint reader button is solid and doesn't wobble like my 2016 did.
* No popping sounds near the MacBook logo on the screen. This was an issue some people had and sounded like a knocking sound. It was due to heat and a poor design on the hinge I believe, in any case it is quiet.
* Overall, the system seems to run a bit hotter to the touch.
* Might be a placebo, but the UI animations and final cut seem to work better with the new GPU.

Overall, I am happy and the system works great. The keyboard is still a little loud for my taste, but not clicking sounds anymore, so I'll deal with it. Overall the system is much better, the 2016 models seem to have been released prematurely.

Good luck everyone!

So I have the 13" pro and it is doing the same thing on quite a few keys. I have an appointment to take it in. I do not want them to just take my brand new Mac from me though. Do they ship you a replacement? What have your experiences been? I need my computer...

Is this a 2017? When they worked on my 2016 15" they took it and shipped it to the repair depot

You got the newest one in May, it was 2016. In June, it would be 2017.

Prematurely? My 2016 was released just in time for me to get it. Works without any of the issues you describe.

P.S. The new "logos" for Option and Control are Mac symbols that are as old as Mac itself. Nothing strange there. First Mac?

There is however a hinge issue that is grabbing my attention more than the keyboard. The hinge is really, really tight. It is sometimes loose if I operate it fast for a few moments, or don't know what. I really hope the issue can be reproduced at the service centre. I will see tomorrow morning how the machine behaves, and take it to them. Let's see.

I have ordered a replacement key from ReplacementLaptopKeys.com as they say it comes with the butterfly mechanism. I will see if I can figure out how to replace it myself as I don't really want to go back to the Apple Store again, for what I'm sure will be a useless top case replacement.

Ooooook... Well, that was fun.

I received the replacement key assembly today. It includes the dome / cup thing (which completes the circuit to register the key when pressed) surrounded by a transparent plastic base, the butterfly mechanism (which balances out the key when pressed), and the keycap (the bit on top w/ the glyph on it that you press).

As you can hopefully see in the attached photo of the old assembly, the butterfly mechanism is actually pinned underneath the cup / dome piece (red arrows). This means you have to remove the dome piece from the keyboard to replace the butterfly mechanism.

It turns out that the dome assembly is glued to the keyboard base around its perimeter. I used a round toothpick and wedged it under each of the corners of the butterfly, focusing pressure on the pins under the dome, and worked my way around and around gently prying the dome up off the keyboard until it finally came loose. Luckily, there appears to have been enough adhesive left on the keyboard to somewhat adhere the replacement dome (I'm not sure it's 100% as secure as it was originally, as evidenced by the dome coming up when I had to remove and reattach the keycap). If I had to do it again I would want to have an equivalent adhesive available to securely fasten the new dome to the keyboard. Something to keep in mind if you plan to do this kind of replacement yourself.

There are four little feet on the bottom of the dome assembly that fit into four little holes in the keyboard and help position the dome over the contacts on the keyboard. This makes positioning the dome + butterfly when placing it back onto the keyboard quite easy.

Another thing that is worth noting is the black rubbery covering on the top of the dome (blue arrow). This is there to block out the bright LED at the top of the key well, and it disintegrates extremely easily so be careful and avoid touching it. You can see that I accidentally removed most of the black covering at the top (blue arrow) while trying to figure out how to remove the dome, which resulted in the top glyph of the key being very bright compared to the rest of the keys when the keycap was reattached.

As mentioned above, I accidentally lifted up the whole new dome / butterfly / keycap mechanism when I had to detach and reattach the keycap (did not adequately hook one of the bottom pins before attaching the top pins). So I don't know how well it will hold up over the long term without new adhesive. Seems to be fairly solid so far; I guess as long as I don't try to pry it off again it should be fine.

The green arrows indicate the pins that broke off on the bottom of the butterfly mechanism which was the genesis of this replacement effort.

So after about 30 minutes of intense anxiety, I have a (mostly?) reattached and working '0' key again. Hopefully this thing hangs together.

And as luck would have it, as soon as I got the 0 keycap back on, the 3 key locked up <bangs head on desk>. Seriously, Apple, what is with these keyboards!

Argh. Well, definitely need new adhesive. The key has come off now from just typing on it for a bit. :/ Not sure where to get this.

Thought I would share my repair experience. Bought 2016 MBP TB 15 and it developed high pitched/repeating/stuck keys for the b, 0, and spacebar keys. Put up with it for a while until the spacebar started getting stuck. Laptop sent in for replacement of top case. Got the laptop back and highly suspect it is a 2017 top case as it matches the description of one of the earlier posts here for the 2017 keyboard. Logos on option and control keys, more solid/sturdy and better looking Touch ID button. Also popped one of the keys and it looks like the classic MacBook switch depressor thing rather than the second generation switches (googled the way these looked). The iFixit tear down described this for the 2017 keyboard also. Took 8 days for laptop to return rather than the estimated 3-5 days they said bc waiting for parts, I presume to wait for the 2017 top case. Overall keyboard feels great/more solid (although this may be placebo). Love the new Touch ID button, more solid and sits more flush with the touch bar. Also I noticed I can not hold down a key and have it repeat e.g. holding down delete will only delete one space. I don't remember if it was like this before. If not I assume they did this to prevent any repeating key issues. Otherwise no issues so far. Have a few months to purchase the 2 year AppleCare extension. Leaning towards buying in case more keyboard issues in the future.

So you mean replace 2016 to 2017 keyboard sold all problem? and it typing feel better? I hate the 2016 keyboard so much, maybe I should go for replacement :|
