AT&T. Mediocre signal. Same places work with iMessage, though.

I have VZW, I'm in the Bay Area. Pretty strong signal so I guess I have better luck.

One of the perks of where I work: I'm paid well instead of getting free pizza, so I can afford the best network available. ;)

I can technically afford Verizon, I just can’t use the phone I’m currently using on it and earlier decided against going to Verizon on principle.

Question for you all. I am looking to get out of the Apple ecosystem and go with either a Pixel phone, Galaxy S9, or Essential phone. I think I could live without iMessage and I don't really use Facetime, but I have so many movies and tv shows purchased through iTunes. I do still have an iPad Pro and Apple TV so it's not like I completely lose out on them. But I'm curious how you all have coped with that particular situation. Not having Twin Peaks - The Return on my mobile device could be a bit frustrating.

Thanks!

I never could, that’s a minor reason I kept going back.

It is simple get the android phone, you can call and text others, use your ios tablet or TV to watch your movies and shows. I have been that way a while and did not regret a single bit.

It is still hard to believe people will interact with others (or not) based on what message format they use or the color of their texts. It must be a kid thing. Seems a bit juvenile and naive to me. In the business world I interact with people using many different modes of communication. Never crossed my mind that one is more desirable than the other. Or that one is looked down upon, etc. Is this sort of attitude related to the perceived elitist Apple thing?

I assume it's a kid thing. To not consider dating someone because of what phone they use is pretty juvenile imo. They will see the light when they get older and wiser.

Definitely not a kid only thing. Certainly some elitism but I think mostly annoying to deal with a single green disabling all the iMessage features for the group, hence greens frequently get left out or communicated with separately

https://www.macrumors.com/2018/03/09/quick-takes-mar-9/

Part of this article speaks to the iMessage:

"Commentary: A good example of the strength of Apple's ecosystem is iMessage and its coveted blue message bubbles, which have essentially become a status symbol. As silly as it may sound, there are a countless number of tweets that mock green bubbles, which is the color Apple uses to display standard text messages."

So it's a widely known phenomenon. :p

To me, the blue bubble status symbol thing is a joke. I have more respect for people that are willing to step out of the herd of sheep and do their own thing. To the people I know, its more of a minor annoyance. Most of them also communicate on Facebook Messenger, so I'm just using that as my daily driver for messaging.

What really sucks, and maybe this is more of an iMessage thing, is that my whole family uses iPhones, and any time I make the switch to Android, they actually get annoyed by it turning to green for group messaging. You're right, it definitely is a dumb status thing.

I have too much sensitive information and I care too much about security to tolerate a flagship phone that leaves a three-month gap between security updates. Especially when the same manufacturer releases the same updates monthly in other regions. If they find it too hard to maintain all those regional variants equally, then how about dropping most or all of the unnecessary variants and providing better support for a more manageable selection.
In theory those security updates are important. Do you have any reports of personal data being breached on Android devices due to the gap in security updates? I'm not implying that it doesn't happen, but often times, the security holes are esoteric in nature and require a specific scenario for them to be exploited... a scenario that a majority of users will never encounter.

The mobile device market is hyper-competitive and ANYTHING that can be used to differentiate one platform from another takes on significance from a marketing perspective. Those differences then get magnified out of proportion. A few mm of difference in the physical dimensions is enough to claim the competition is an oversized block. A few grams of weight is the difference between "ultra-light" and "a heavy cinder block".

The same is true for security updates. If a device doesn't have every security update applied, it is a malware-infested, virus-riddled brick... or so some would want us to believe.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to believe differently about the issue of security, but I'd like to have a realistic understanding and not just fall in with the hyperbole.

Haha, so it's not only our family :)

Can’t recall any reports of actual breaches, but I’d like to make sure my phone isn’t going to create such a report. Yes, depending on the vulnerability the actual risk might be rather low, but still it doesn’t take away the nagging feeling of having a known vulnerability unpatched on my device. But even more annoying is the feeling that the manufacturer is treating you like a second rate citizen whose security isn’t as important as another customer’s who happens to live in an area where they offer a different regional variant and one they actually care to maintain appropriately.

Well either you're a kid or a psychotic freak. That we can say for sure.

My wife is more annoyed with me than the rest of the family. I can communicate with everyone else in Facebook Messenger quite easily, but she refuses to use Facebook. We use GroupMe for a running group message with the family and that is where we tend to put pictures and videos. If someone forgets and puts one in a regular text thread, then we just ask them to repost it in GroupMe. While it is annoying, its not a game stopper. If, however, I was for example a Mom of school kids and communicating with many different groups of class parents, team parents, etc... it would be a nightmare to be the green bubble. Now you are talking about messing it up for a group of people you don't know. Even when I had an iPhone, I found that many such groups use GroupMe to make it easier for everyone... but if most of the crowd has iPhones they may want to be difficult and refuse.

It’s easy to insult people, isn’t it?
In my book you are if your dating preferences are build on what color a messaging bubble has. But hey, that's just me.

And seriously Im not insulting, so please chill a bit.

I’m actually pretty chill. And I doubt it’s really the colors but what they represent. iMessage allows me to send full resolution images and video. MMS is broken, and even when it does work it sends lesser images.

Not to mention that I like messaging with iPhone users because I can also easier share things from Photos and Animoji and maybe even music and movies if they’re family or a close friend.

I know it's not about the color itself, but still, does it make the behavior more acceptable? Not really huh? But if you think it's normal not dating someone because they don't have a iPhone Im cool with that.

while I may not agree with their motives I respect anyones right to have preferences. People do this all the time. Looking at a person's car, bank account, hair, body type whatever, people make superficial judgments about who they want to be with all the time. If blue bubbles are a thing who am I to judge.

Why would Apple make its iMessage available for other phone makers and hurt its sales in the process? If WhatsApp or Messenger made phones, they too would limit their app to their phone. Capitalism is not a charity. The purpose is to maximize profits. By making iMessage available to Android phone makers, Apple hurts its profits. Apple didn’t invent the rules of capitalism.
They claim to care about social issues, yet segregating people into the have's and have not's with the blue and green stuff is fine with them, and they went so far as to deliberately trash the quality of group conversations for everyone if you include even one green person. I find it incredibly distasteful as with any color segregation.

Well, I have zero respect for those people. When you start looking at how much cash someone has or even worse in this case what phone they use you have lost all respect in my eyes.

There are a thousand different reasons for not dating a person. I don’t judge for the most part because it’s none of my business.

I’m sure we will all be just fine without the respect of some random judgmental online person.

So you would not date someone who uses an Android?Since you're taking it personal.

I wouldn’t date anyone at all, ever. I’m Aromantic as well as Asexual. I just get tired of judgmental people.

They’re not segregating between haves and have nots but their customers and not their customers. They’re also trying to push their suppliers to take care of actual human rights issues. They alsdid have no control over the quality of SMS and MMS.

Yes they are, there is NO technical reason for an entire group conversation to have poor image quality just because one person in it doesn't have the means or inclination to use iMessage. The actual reason they do it is to get people to apply group pressure on their friends to get an iPhone, and it works. But it is disgraceful.
As for their them pushing for human rights issues they seem very willing to segregate between blue and green.
