Wasn't a criticism, just an FYI :)

Indeed they did an awesome job.

In this day and age of the internet, you never know when someone will take your lack of knowledge on a topic the wrong way and criticize the hell out of you. Case in point: this throttle-gate issue. So many people were critiquing Apple and calling them bad things.

I have just developed this automatic reaction to apologize to anything I have said because of these visceral and over-the-top reactions that are oh so common on the internet today. I can't help it.

Wait, so all it was all a bug?! And to think I almost cancelled my i9 order... :D

Granted, I still buy into the observation that the MBP chassis still isn't ideal for harbouring an i9, but its reassuring to hear that the issue wasn't anywhere near as severe as first seemed. I suppose the one thing I learned from all this is not to be swayed by the YouTube hive mind of naysayers and clickbaiters. (That wasn't a dig at Dave Lee btw who I believe to be pretty objective, but more the horde of sensationalist vloggers who decided to ride the outrage train for more views).

Now it's just the question whether or not the i9 gives real performance benefits in benchmarks and real life situations. I really hope to find out in the coming days.

I've deleted a number of draft post that ended up more explanation than caveat to avoid offense, than actual post content!

Every benchmark, every temperature reading, everything has to be done again to get a true, realistic read.

Alright guys, some interesting notes today. Been playing around with mining and for that task it's pure CPU. So this is what I'm getting.

2 cores - 4.6GHZ
4 cores - 4.0GHZ
6 cores - 2.9GHZ

Ran it for around 20 minutes, no throttling *yet* and no tweaks used.

Also tested Apple's update, seemed to fix the throttling that was happening when playing games in a virtual machine and encoding videos using ffmpeg.

Got a video up on my channel with the full tests, but things are looking good.

That's something that will probably be ascertained with time. Though personally I'm just happy with the piece of mind that I've perhaps future proofed myself just the little bit more with the i9.

In one core, are you able to get to 4.8 sustained or even at all?

If there is one thing I learned from all of this, and I have been following it from the start as I’m an i9 owner......do not drink the koolaid.

To Apple's credit, on the MacBook Pro page they clearly show performance graphs only for

OK but mining is for degenerate gamblers, penny pinchers and scammers looking to make a buck out of other people. Don't make yourself or Apple look bad by mentioning it. Leave it for the weirdos in their mom's basement who post conspiracy memes on 4chan.

Thanks for stressing the CPUs though.

Wut wut wut? You know nothing about mining dude. Just refrain from mentioning it.

Mining is not gambling. You don’t pay anything (other than the electric bill). Of course I wouldn’t recommend mining on Mac as it is an expensive laptop and also because the mining profits are really low these days but other than this there is nothing wrong with mining.

Cryptocurrency is not considered gambling if you know what you are doing and are not spending what you can’t afford losing.

Are you suggesting you will not jump on the upgrade bandwagon if Apple releases a new laptop with OLED or a resolution bump in or within 2020? :D

.

I know 'everything' about it. I knew it deeply and that's why I know what a wasteful scam it is. Your response is exactly the kind of cult-like insanity from the basement dwelling conspiracy theory crypto crowd. You just destroy the environment to scam each other with your silly pyramid scheme coin game. Most of you guys so blinded by lambo-dreams you don't even know that mining means you are trying to process transactions for darkweb criminals. Don't reply to me anymore.

My bad. Thanks for enlightening me on this mixup! Congrats on winterny then.

I found this forum was the best place to go to watch all this unfold, and to get all the reliable data posted elsewhere - links to videos, knowledgeable critiques of the videos both good and bad, and all the news. This is clearly the best place to go for the real truth, and there are some really smart/experienced people here. The bad behavior was at a bare minimum, and I learned a lot too. I am grateful to be a small part of this community, I appreciate learning what was really going on.

This forum was likely a significant assist to Apple to get this thing fixed (I was hoping for a fix by September actually). I posted this because there are likely many of us lurkers who could not really contribute to the dissection of the problem, but benefitted greatly by being able to follow along.

Kudos to @winterny but many other smart contributors here too, job well done and thank you!

Hear hear.

I joined this forum yesterday (but been lurking for a few days) to monitor how this whole episode unfolded, and I'm super glad I did. Had I allowed myself to be swayed by doom-mongers on YouTube and Reddit I would have likely cancelled my order.
