Thanks for this. I guess the choice is: faster performance at the expense of screen quality. I love my mini 4, but it's starting to show it's age.

Thanks. Sounds like it's worth it for the pencil support and speed increase alone.
I only warn people about the non-laminated screen because way back in the day when the Air 1 first launched, I definitely noticed it. It did not sound or feel like my iPad 3 at all. It seemed to have more flex and made a hollow thump when I tapped it.

But that's not to say I didn't love my Air 1. I LOVED that iPad. The design just blew me away and it was fast as hell for its time. It was the first iPad I ever tried to start using as more than a tablet. So obviously the non-laminated screen didn't bother me too much. But it was noticeable even back when I didn't know why it seemed different.

Lol, during the course of using the Air 1 (~2.5 years?), my muscles have gotten trained to use very light taps so this isn't an issue for me anymore. Honestly though, it seems like I was the only one among my circle of acquaintances who was bothered by it. Nobody else cared.

Interestingly enough, comparing the Air and the 2017 iPad, the tapping noise is more muted on the 2017 iPad.

I don't think I ever even mentioned it out loud to anyone because I felt like maybe it was all in my head. I had no idea at the time that laminated and non-laminated displays were a thing. But then when the Air 2 came out I was like, "Oh, THAT'S why my Air 1 screen always sounded and felt weird!"

Yeah, the display and how it feels has never bothered me on my Air 1. Its the speed and obvious lack of RAM thats starting to show its age. I have to do something here. Very close to just going with the 2018 iPad base model even though Id love to spring for the Pro. Wish I could find a true good deal on a 9.7" pro but everyne is still asking a lot for them and they are pricey at the refurb apple store. I also really want LTE so that adds to the costs. Arrgh! :)

Technically, the iPads from original to iPad 4 all had non-laminated displays, too. The issue with the Air is Apple used much thinner glass in order to reduce weight and thickness.

Lol, I kept my Air on iOS 9 so the few times I need to use it (when the Pros are charging), it's reasonably fast. :)

If you're going to get LTE, might as well just bump up the purchase to the 64GB Pro 10.5 LTE. If Apple releases new Pro models come June, that would probably mean a price drop on refurbs. One of the reasons I look forward to new product announcements - either for the new product itself or to get a good deal on the outgoing model. That's pretty much one of the few times one could get LTE models discounted. WiFi-only models (particularly base storage) often go on sale but not the higher capacity LTE ones. :)

Just upgraded from an iPad 4 to the iPad 6 today and I’m very pleased with the unit. Noticeably faster than my 4 and being able to run iOS 11 with the added features are nice. And it is considerably lighter than the full size 4 that I had.

Looked at the IPP’s today at Apple, just couldn’t justify the price difference for what I needed. If I didn’t have a MacBook Pro I would probably purchase an IPP but for what I use an iPad for I think this new 2018 model will be just fine.

I traded the Air1 in for the new one. Kid is beyond happy to have space and a pretty color. Now here is hoping they stop fighting over them! LOL

Need to pick up s Pencil next week for it, even if she says she doesn’t need it.

Thanks BBY for the easy trade deal.

ETA: we also have a 9.7 iPP, and the 2nd gen 12. I haven’t used the new one enough to compare/

I'm still on the fence if it's worth upgrading my mini 4 for the 2018 9.7. I like the idea of Apple Pencil support and the faster chip but.....

Any thoughts? I mostly use my mini for surfing, reading, streaming.

How important to you is the size? The 2018 iPad is small enough to be portable but obviously not as portable as the Mini 4.

Also, how important is pixel density to you while reading? The Mini 4 has the highest ppi (pixels per inch) than any other iPad (Pro or non). 10.5 Pro=264, 12.9 Pro=264, Mini 4=326

If you can keep the Mini 4 (I've kept mine) and get the 2018, then I think you'd be pleased with it. But I don't know if I would replace the Mini 4 with it.

Many thanks for this. I'm going to hang onto the Mini 4 and see what, if any, pro updates are in store in a few months.

Excellent! I also ended up going with the 6th gen 32GB standard iPad with LTE just today. I used the pretty generous trade in value that Best Buy is offering right now along with a 10% single item coupon that they sent me recently. All told, I was out the door for about $300 bucks. Not bad for a brand new LTE iPad. I immediately notice the performance difference between this unit and my Air 1. Wow. Huge difference!

Sure, the pro would have been nice and there’s always sales and deals but I still did pretty good and this new iPad will do the job for me. I got 5 solid years out of my air 1 and almost $140 for it on trade. It didn’t owe me anything and was a workhorse! Me be happy. :)

I’m using my new 2018 right now. I sold my 2nd gen iPP and picked up this little guy to transition me to a smaller iPP when the new ones are released (mainly for the ASK because it’s my favorite keyboard ever).

I picked up a little silver stand from Amazon (looks a bit like an iMac stand), and a $15 silver Bluetooth keyboard (looks much like a Mac keyboard).

It makes a nice little setup on my desk, but I have this lightweight little pad I can pick up and run with.

Honestly, if it works out well, and I learn to love the keyboard, I may stick with this little inexpensive option for a while.

My daughter hasn’t let me use it long enough to compare the speed, glad to hear it is hugely faster! LOL

I wish I’d had that coupon, but I’m happy with the $130 off.

Enjoy!

Yeah, the coupon was an email that I got being an rewards premium member or something. They send those occasionally. Only good on regularly priced items and they expire in like a week. It all just worked out for me.

You’ll notice the improvement. No question. It was more than I thought it’d be. Very pleased!

Congrats. Apple gave me $105 for my iPad 4, didn’t have a BB coupon or would have gone that route. I’m happy with the improvements over the 4, no complaints here.

Finally got myself a 128GB Cellular in Melbourne, disappointingly it comes with 10w charger. Gonna buy a 12w when I’m back home since I can’t utilise Aussie plug.

I complained about the charging speed before, but I think I’ve just gotten used to it now. Will there really be a noticeable difference between a 10W and 12W charger?

Both suck unless you’re charging overnight, honestly. But the fast chargers are harder on your battery, so pick your poison I suppose.

As an example, assuming charging efficiency is the same, if the 10W charges to 100% in ~5 hours, then on a 12W charger, it'll take ~4 hours.

That said, as mentioned slower is easier on the battery. If you're just gonna leave it on for overnight charging, might as well stick to 10W.
