Does the new iPad still have a a real mechanical home button or is it the "fake" one like with the iphone 7 and up?

I wish it had the haptic button. Something about it just feels more solid, and even though it’s never been an issue for me, I hear that the haptic button is less prone to mechanical failure and wear. I suspect that the only reason that iPads don’t have it is because it’s probably impractical to scale up the haptic engine for a tablet. May be the same reason why there’s no 3D Touch on iPads either.

It's real. No iPad models have ever had haptics.

Are US models getting 12w and other markets getting 10w?
US here and I've received both 10W and 12W before (2017 iPad, 12W from Best Buy upon launch and the 10W from Apple Store 5 months later). My guess is random distribution depending on whatever supply they have on hand.

There really is nothing mechanical to fail unless the entire haptic engine breaks. (Which I guess is possible.) The haptic buttons don’t move at all.

Yes, I was saying that the physical button is more prone to failure, not that I’ve ever had that problem.

So how does this compare as far as how long it takes to charge devices? She needs something that would do 2X 2017 iPad, 1X 2018 iPad and 1X iPhone 8+
So had some fun testing chargers and cables with a USB meter. Load is a 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 at 45% charge. Didn't try multiple devices. I only have one meter.

Specs are on Apple's site.

No laminated display, or true tone (if you care about that). Externally it appears to be the same as the 2017 model. Seems like they just gave it an A10 chip and Pencil support.

I'm also a bit disappointed that it's 1st gen TouchID. Never would have thought that would matter to me, but my 8 Plus has spoiled me! I guess such compromises have to be made to keep the price down.

Looks like a decent upgrade to my iPad Air 2. But my iPad Air 2 refuses to die!

I suspect it willbe a nice bump in performance. I have an Air 1 thats getting old now and Im very close to doing the Best Buy trade-in deal. Hmmmm.

Anyone trade in their Air 1 and find this latest iPad to be a noticebale improvement?
LMAO even Air 1 to Air 2 was a HUGE noticeable improvement. Air 1 was the biggest underpowered turd released by Apple and almost comparable to iPad 3 and iPhone 4.

My daughter is still using a air 1, air 2 was the dog imo, screen distortion and vibrating speakers.

But it's got 2GB of RAM for longevity. As far as I've read here, it performs better than the Air 1 on iOS 11 by a long shot.

My wife has been using her Air1 for over 4 years and refuses to upgrade. It has given her zero problems to this day.

I just traded in my Air 2 for the 2018 iPad. 12W charger was included. Performance difference is noticeable (to me). Non-laminated screen is noticeable in the difference of how it feels/sounds not so much in how it looks...looks great.

Now I have to put some clear Con-Tact paper on the back, and see if the extra matte screen protectors I have from the Air 2 will fit on this. :)

Is it just me but I think that viewing angle in 2018 is much more narrow than in 2017 model? It almost feel a little like TN-screen.

Also it looks like uniformity is much worse. In portrait mode there is very slight narrow shadow near whole left edge. It can be seen with full screen certain gray level solid images and it also shows up in certain solid color moving images when it looks like screen has dirty line. Upper edge has narrow bluish part, just hint of blue. Lower edge is dimmer than rest of the screen. Lower left corner has slight red tint. Some slight flashlight type backlight bleed can be seen too.

In my previous 2017 model screen was perfect in every way. It was almost unrealistically flawless considering it was edge lit IPS. I think it was even brighter than this new one. I was wondering if mine is faulty or is this just normal variance between units or is the screen in this year model worse?
I realize this is entry level model so are my expectations just too high, was I just lucky with my previous model?

Do they use LCD-panels from different vendors or are they all from LG? That would maybe explain some of the differencies like narrower viewing angle. Or could it just be difference from new touchscreen glass surface with pen support maybe?

Anyone else seeing this? Those are not necessarily noticeable at first glance and probably not eveyone would even be bothered by them but I seem to notice them more and more often after spending more time using my new iPad in dimmer room.

Yes, that might concern me too. In the past, if I’d buy a new iPad model and noticed something unexpected or unusual (especially with the display), I’d take it down to the local Apple store and compare it side by side with the same demo model at the exact same settings.

If it looked or functioned the same, I’d attiribute it to a common trait of the model and feel ok with it (relatively). Otherwise, I’d head straight over to the Genius Bar.

But I see no reason why the 2018 display would be any different than the 2017. As I understand, they’re exactly the same specification. My 2017 is perfect, as you describe.

I'm not seeing the things that you are seeing. Granted, I've only had the 2018 iPad for a day. Viewing angles on the 2018 are not noticeably different than my 12.9 Pro or Mini 4. I find the uniformity of the 2018 screen to be just as good as the Mini 4, and perhaps ever so slightly better than my 1st Gen 12.9.

It's been a while since I owned an iPad without a laminated screen and I was pleasantly surprised to see just how nice the screen looks. As I mentioned in a previous post, the feel and sound of the screen ARE different. I did apply a matte screen protector and it did help give the screen a more substantial feel and less-hollow sound.

It is possible that yours is "faulty". I put that in quotes because it could be within Apple's range of acceptability... not that it matters, since YOU are dissatisfied with the screen.

Cool - I think Im just going to go with a 2018 9.7" model with LTE & 32GB. That should be fine for me. I do love the cell data so thats a must. Ill just "deal" with the 2GB of RAM. Im sure it will be a pretty big improvement over my current AIR 1.

Looking forward to June to see what if anything is released! Hoping for a Mini 5 and/or Mini Pro!

i was very hopeful that Apple was going to produce a Mini Plus, but after they released the 2018 ipad, i sadly must conclude that Apple isn’t going to have a follow-on to the Mini 4. It doesn’t make sense for Apple to produce a Mini that will cost more that the 2018 ipad. There just aren’t enough Mini die-hards to make it financially feasible to sell such a device. But having said that, if one doesn’t need an ipad now, it is worth waiting to see what, if anything is announced.

I love the new 2018 iPad. I have added it to be my more portable iPad alongside the 12.9".

My only gripe is how warm the back gets. Always on the right side. Is anyone else finding this? It has been a long time since I have owned an air type form factor so I cannot remember if this is normal.
