I did look at 13 and 15 2018 today and ran the code botH LG

I did notice a difference in greys on settings and grey on safari top bar and the dock icons looked a little flatter color wise and white point warmer than my 2016 Ntb

I definitely noticed a difference from my memory. How great of one? Up to debate but I would be a little bummed to downgrade personally

I'm also a super screen stickler. Pretty well known on these boards

Is it possible to professionally calibrate the screens on these laptops? Presumably there are no preset calibrations you can load, given ever screen is different.

When properly calibrated the screen should look quite different than factory. The most noticeable difference is the lack of intense blue cast over the display.

I'm not sure if I exactly understand your issue. I'm curious, do you have automatically adjust brightness turned on when you're calibrating? Because you 100% need to have that turned off while calibrating.

Your post got me thinking about my calibration, as the default “Color LCD” is quite blue as you say... very “cold.”

I used DisplayCAL for the first time ever, lots more options but not sure I completely understand all of them. As mentioned earlier, the calibration it produced was barely different than the default “Color LCD” the machine came with... still very blue. I just did another calibration with the Spyder software (that I originally thought was malfunctioning) and it’s noticeably warmer and far more pleasant on the eyes.

I’m sure I had a setting incorrect on DisplayCAL... will stick with the Spyder software as I always have done in the past. DisplayCAL also took about an hour, the Spyder calibration took ~5 mins :D

Yes you can professionally calibrate it. Or do it yourself if you have the equipment. The software is free and the hardware is around $100-200.

I believe Apple calibrates them before they leave the factory, but you should be able to calibrate them yourself using a Spyder.

If your screen is warmer and looks more white than factory you're definitely on the right track. The time difference is normal. Displaycal is more powerful and should bring more accurate results but it takes longer. It does sound like a settings issue with displaycal, an issue I had myself when I first used it. I know you have to load the spyder calibration data. It's in the settings which can be selected from the task bar. I forget where exactly.

i dont think there are any samsung ones even mine is lg now

It is a big difference to me. I think Apple switch to LG and Toshiba for SSD for more profit in the same price.

tbh i think exaclty like you but i dont think samsung make thier screens no more i was thinking goin into the apple store to try it will thier terminal app work?

going to check my mates macbook and if its lg ill confrim that all are lgs

Terminal code should work. Worked on. Best Buy demo units which I think are even more locked down on average, software wise

It makes sense I guess, they're partnered for the UltraFine displays too. Mine looks quite nice as well, not fussed about it.

fwiw, tho I noticed a difference I dont think its to same magnitude as MBA Sammy vs LG in text crispness or previous MBP's IR LG to not IR not LG

and for all we know, maybe the yield for uniform displays is much better with LG. I do recall people rifling through laptops to get a decent one with the 2016s

I lucked the heck out first time, but I believe it.

Does DisplayCal support ambient light sensor? When you calibrate you usually first take a reading of the ambient light in the room, since that can dramatically effect the color curve. Then you calibrate TO THOSE CONDITIONS.

ok just to confirm my mate had lg

i tried two 15inch at apple LG

i tried 2 13 inch at apple LG

i think the case is closed that only lg is supplying them

which weirdly makes me feel better

Then this begs the question - how do 2018 lg panels look compared to 2017/2016 sammy counterparts? My 2012 mbp is a sammy panel and I've been very happy w/ it for the past 6 years but I did hear some negative things about lg panels including burn-ins and yellow tints etc...

2016 and 2017 every single one of the display are awful. Including the one display in Apple store.

The uneven tint shift and uniformity is the worse of all MacBook Pro I have ever used so far.

It's either one side of screen fill with pink tint or yellow tint. Disgusting.

Makes me wonder if 2018 have the issue fixed.

We need someone here to compare a 2017 LG screen to a 2018 LG screen and see if there is any difference.

The 2018 has true tone. The 2017 doesn't have it. What are you comparing? Can't you say that the Samsung is too bluish in your home due to the lack of True Tone adjustment to the white point?

You can turn off true tone and compare

You could be right, I have a 15" 2018 2.2 with an LG screen also.

I am looking answers for this also.

All of my three 15" 2017 units had uneven tin and uniformity some degree. I bothered me so much on 3400€ machine that returned all of them and waited for 2018 model.

Waiting for answers on did they fix this issue.

I'm pretty picky in this area as well, I returned 3 1st gen 12.9" iPad Pro units because of this. I have the 13" 2018 with LG, no issues at all. Even color and lighting across the panel.

I returned my first two 15" 2016 models for color tints and kept the 3rd which had a subtle left to right pink to blue shift that I could live with. My 15" new 2018 model has what I consider a perfect screen (white, bright and no color tints or unevenness). I don't know if the issue is fixed or if I just got lucky. In my opinion getting a good screen has always been like a lottery. It's early, but the lack of screen complaints on the 2018 model to date I see as a good sign.

I have a 2018 13" i5 and a 2018 13" i7 sitting next to each other. Both LG screens, but they look different. One is a little cooler and more sharp seeming, while the other is warmer and the colors are slightly more vibrant. It almost looks hazier in a way.

So, despite both being LG, there's definite variance with the panels. Good news is, it's tough to say which is better!

Ill bet these LG’s have better yields on uniformity

That’s a bigger concern to most people than minute contrast differences only to the pickiest (me)

It would be to me too, I’d prefer uniformity to a tinge more contrast If i had to pick
