I'm pretty picky in this area as well, I returned 3 1st gen 12.9" iPad Pro units because of this. I have the 13" 2018 with LG, no issues at all. Even color and lighting across the panel.
I returned my first two 15" 2016 models for color tints and kept the 3rd which had a subtle left to right pink to blue shift that I could live with. My 15" new 2018 model has what I consider a perfect screen (white, bright and no color tints or unevenness). I don't know if the issue is fixed or if I just got lucky. In my opinion getting a good screen has always been like a lottery. It's early, but the lack of screen complaints on the 2018 model to date I see as a good sign.

Absolutely delighted to hear that. In the coming months, going to order 15" with 32gb of Ram, so it's going to be "custom" build. Would be an awful hassle to wait 2 weeks, return, wait another 2 weeks etc.

Thank you for your early impressions and answers. Really great to see that Apple has stepped up their screen-quality game with True Tone.

Then this begs the question - how do 2018 lg panels look compared to 2017/2016 sammy counterparts?

A couple quick pics of a 2016/2018 Samsung vs LG

What’s your takeaway? ^ fromvthe differences

I haven’t said which is which intentionally. To my eyes at least, there is not a lot of difference, though the LG may be *slightly* warmer.

The biggest difference I have noticed and it is obviously a hardware choice is that the 2018 does not seem to have as high a maximum brightness on battery as the 2016, but while plugged in they both seem to achieve relatively the same brightness.

Long story short, if you couldn’t put them side by side and examine them, I think you would be hard pressed to spot one over the other without a terminal command

The right looks better overall:

Better white point , uniformity, spectrum of colors (look at that orange and purple in top left on that wavy wallpaper),

The only area where the left one has it beat is the elephant’s butt where I see more detail in the wrinkles / more saturation in the mid section of its body with blacks

I’d probably go with the right.

Are they also different shades of coating on SG? Or just lighting?

Probably the lighting, I do have a window in front of the screens and I can see the effects of the light far more on the left one. Lines from the blinds and a bit of a distracting light bar through the front half of the elephant on the left. Likely from a second set of windows to the left. Like I said, they were quick picks and I could definitely set them up in a more controlled environment if I was really trying to scrutinize them.

That said, the right side one you chose is the Samsung panel

That’s interesting bc the left exhibits pink to green

That’s normally a Samsung thing for the less than stellar panels

Do I have a good eye or what?

The lack of range of purple and orange was the giveaway to me the left one lacked contrast comparatively.

Whether or not it matters that’s up to the user :p

I put that wavy wallpaper on my nTB 2016 and it has a good orange spectrum too

Which leads one to wonder if it’s all just a lottery crapshoot, regardless of manufacturer :)

That’s always a given. The lottery

But there are characteristics specific to each manufacturer on top of it.

Fun times

You can see the left panel’s pink “bias” on the left side on backdrop of the elephant wallpaper too

I am sure that’s true as well (the characteristics) just as I know photographers can look at JPEGs from various cameras and tell you in a split second whether it came from a Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.

But as you say, I am not sure how important it is to most people. While it’s fun to compare them side by side and try to spot which is which, I am not sure the majority would ever notice the difference sitting in front of it solo and without a direct comparison.

I guess if you are particularly sensitive to the difference and I am sure some are just as some can spot the differences in audio qualities better than the majority of us, the single panel source may be bad news for some with the 2018 models.

Nailed it
I am for sure not the “average” Apple consumer with my screen fidelity pickiness (and I’ve gotten better, but I still can’t ever ‘unsee’ certain things)

Plus considering my Mac I keep for years I want a screen I’ll be happy to stare at every time without distractions. But for what it’s worth I wouldn’t go rifling through 10 units either. That’s a lot of $$$ on hold on a credit card. And a lot of returns

But in all seriousness the lg doesn’t look terrible. Just not my personal preference

Agreed. If there were 2018 units out there with a Samsung display I would probably try my luck in the lottery and see if I could grab one. But by all indications LG is it.

But I also bought it for the purpose of having it docked to an external display for home use, which is the majority for me since I work from home. That’s a another lottery there. Laptops, displays, televisions, they all have their variances within the same model/sku.

I think I can live with the LG for the times I am using it off the external monitor. The 2016 is going to my wife to replace her 2013 13”. She uses hers more away from home than me and I am sure she will like the bigger/brighter Samsung display over the 2013 model she has been using

Honestly SD, the only real difference I see in your picture is the MacBook Pro on the left seems to be a lighter shade of space gray than the one on the right.

The screens look pretty even to me, which reminds me that I need to calibrate my 2018.
[doublepost=1533485624][/doublepost]Now I just need to get an UltraFine for my desk. Not sure if I want to go 2x 22” 4k, or 1x 27” 5k. Since I do more coding that graphics work I expect that the 2x 22” would work out just fine (and be cheaper).

The left one is indeed lighter and slightly yellower by comparison. I am not sure if that’s an effect of age or a difference in anodizing, but good eye :)

Not this again...
I remember the hysteria. I remember feeling so relieved my 2012 MPB Retina had the Samsung screen.

I've been through a lot of Macs since then and I've never checked the screen manufacturer. All screes have been excellent, with the exception of the awful light bleed on my 2017 iMac, which was so bad my non-techie wife spotted the problem immediately. Not sure if that was a panel or assembly issue.

Anyway, just enjoy the machines.
[doublepost=1533518464][/doublepost]
Do you have a source for that?
I think the source is his subjective side-by-side.

The one on the left is brighter in the middle picture. The rest look the same to me.

I think the only thing that worries me re: the 4K is if 22” will be enough or if I will have to have two of them. Not 100% sure but I think the scaled resolution by default is 2560x1440 or something like that? That doesn’t seem to line up with retina...

My 4K Ultra Fine is in my office--i will check tomorrow. It's next to a 27 inch Dell 4K--the LG blows it away. It's the same panel in the 21 inch 4K iMac.

The resolution of the 21.5% 4K LG Display is 4096 x 2304. 2048 x 1152 is the default "retina" scale.

Thanks for that. The LG screens are the only way to get that retina quality on an external monitor. So I guess that is the way to go. Otherwise an ultrawide would be ideal. Can’t have both unfortunately.

Seems the screens are no longer 10bit as was the case with some 2017 versions
Under Graphics/Displays used to say
Framebuffer Depth: 30-Bit Color (ARGB10101010)

now for 2018 15inch A610 040
Framebuffer Depth: 24-Bit Color (ARGB8888)

2016 and 2017 every single one of the display are awful. Including the one display in Apple store.

The uneven tint shift and uniformity is the worse of all MacBook Pro I have ever used so far.

It's either one side of screen fill with pink tint or yellow tint. Disgusting.

Makes me wonder if 2018 have the issue fixed.
My 2018 13 is very uniform. Impressive actually. Probably one of the most uniform screens I've ever seen. I wish my replacement iPad Pro I'm dealing with had the same screen. It's a disaster.
[doublepost=1534561858][/doublepost]LG on the right.

If anyone is dying for colors to pop more.. Preferences, Accessibility, Display, Contrast. Just move the slider no more than a few notches to the right. Definitely takes away accuracy but might satisfy some.
