How i can return my MBP after 14 days?

How far after? I returned the 5500M after 13 days, but then I returned the 13" 2020 after 17 days. They let me do it with no fuss at all. After all that I got the 5600M and I'm very happy. It's perfect in clamshell and lid open. But what surprised me most was I was working lid open with no external monitor a few days ago and temps were around 86-95F/35C. The machine was cold to the touch, even above the keyboard!

Well, now we have to be careful that there don't get legends slowly like King Arthur. The temperatures are always fluctuating and if you really work with it, I can't believe a permanent 35 degrees apart from staring at the screen. Especially after a few hours of work. Independent of the measuring points at different locations.

Almost two months after 😅 Does Anybody know whether bigs sur beta 2 fixed the problem?

Just recently got the 16 inch base model. Ive been experimenting a bit with it and found that if I keep the external monitor in 1080p and keep my macbook open, it doesn't go crazy. It does have a little noise but nothing crazy like when I run it 4k with my monitor. 1080p is gross, especially with how much I paid for the monitor but I feel like for my work, it is adequate.

I am still in the return window and I was wondering if I exchanged it for a high end 13 inch, it would have this problem or not? I wouldn't mind doing that and have the ability to do 4k or 1440p without a jet engine taking off in my office.

I wouldn't say its cheaper. You have to buy a razor X core for 300-400€ + RP 5700 XT for another 400€.
And this is even slower than the RP5600M and has some limitations because you need to transfer the data always through TB.

It is what you can find on youtube as well its not recommended to use eGPU over the 5600M
You don't HAVE to buy an rx 5700 xt if you are purchasing to reduce heat and improve CPU performance but otherwise don't NEED the fastest GPU (in which case you would already be considering the 5600m or an eGPU).

A razer core X with an rx 5500 xt or even 560/580 is definitely cheaper than a 5600m upgrade, especially if you already have the machine, and will give you even better CPU performance than the 5600m.

  1. Is anyone has some good news for us from Apple support/engineers?
  2. Are we going to see a fix in BigSur?
  3. After we realized that there is no issue with the 5600M model, maybe it's a hardware issue?
  4. Please call Apple support every day and send them feedback, we need to win in this fight.

Next step class lawsuit?

According to me,

Apple engineers are ignoring that issue as much as possible,
There will not be solution in BigSur,
they want you not to be noticed by you,
And i agree with davidbend, call everyday them, until they give up,and accept that failure

High end 13" 2020 works great. If I didn't need the power of the 5600M and extra cores I would have stayed with that machine. I went 16" 5500M -> 13" 2020 -> 16" 5600M. Try the 13". If you don't like it bite the bullet and go to the 5600M, or wait for ARM.

Apple "senior" support just tried to convince me that it is perfectly normal for the 16" to reach 70 degrees at idle, that throttling doesn't hinder performance, high temps are absolutely normal and etc.

I asked about the 5600 draw several times for comparison and not a single answer so they are dodging this subject like Neo was dodging bullets in the matrix.

He told me several times that they do not accept 3rd party apps as evidence so when I showed them data from their tool that was installed by apple engineers the "advisor" went straight to everything is fine, no issues in your report can I help you with anything else.
I'm fairly certain no fix is coming because they designed this system with full awareness of all this issues.

How hot... is too hot for extended use? I think we forget that cooling on the 16 inch is better in the sense that the fans kick in earlier and at higher speeds. Yesterday I worked with my screen open, connected to my 4k monitor. I had an intense day, though very little video editing or anything that required the graphics card (not that this really matters for the constant draw to the radeon, but to give you a sense of what I was doing). The computer would basically cycle between max RPM fans, then down to 3,000, then back up again, then maybe to 4,000 if I closed some chrome windows. However, the whole time it never really went above 70.

Today, I'm testing (again) a custom fan profile using TG Pro and a combo of Volta and switching off turbo boost. So far, I've been able to keep the temps in the 60s while fans sit at around 3,000 RPM. This is all monumentally stupid because Apple needs to fix the problem with the dGPU, but I feel like a set up like this could really show benefit for those of us that need to have a screen open but don't require the absolute peak performance from the i9. I'm wondering if it's safe to let temps sit slightly higher, maybe around 75-80. I have 3 years of apple care and an extra year from the extended warranty offered by the credit card.

All of this said, when I played around with TG Pro previously my laptop overheated and crashed, so we'll see.

EDIT: how bad is it for the laptop to run consistently around 75-80 degrees?

Yeah, the 5600 working fine with external monitors and fixing the problem sounds a lot like Apple knows they screwed up the 5300/5500 GPUs.

Apple "senior engineers" denying it's an issue is insane.

To clarify this was senior support as I requested escalation through chat session. I don't believe this was an actual engineer because the way he was formulating the statements was absolutely obvious that the goal was to make me believe that rules of thermodynamics do not apply to apple / intel products.
Glad I have everything in writing.

This is a Joke!...

APPLE NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE!!

DAMN I'm pissed off!

About 2 weeks into my i7/32GB/5500 8GB on 10.15.6 and fans are hovering around 1800-2500RPM (ranges from faintly audible to whisper audible) when connected to a Dell P2415Q at 4K60hz from a CalDigit TS3+. Temps are around 55-65C.

Screenshot is the TBS app right now as I'm typing this post. Have outlook, chrome, and messages.app open.

When I open FCP or Resolve or do other creative work the fans revs up to 2500-3500RPM, at which point I have TBS switch the turbo boost off until the fans come back down to 2500ish, rinse and repeat.

I'm probably lucky, but this issue isn't really affecting me the way the last 100+ pages of "this laptop is literally on fire" rhetoric did to other people. I toyed with the idea of exchanging for 5600 but the extra $540 to solve a problem that isn't happening to me isn't really worth it. I do like having the extra GPU power in case I wanted to run some games though.

I do have one issue with this laptop though- my TS3+'s 87w isn't enough to power it during rendering sessions in FCP/Resolve, the battery actually goes down when plugged in, like one of those junk Surface Books 🤣🤣🤣

You don't ever speak to an engineer thru support. Its always just some schmuck reading a script. All the tech companies like this.

There's practically zero CPU load and you are almost at 60 Celsius.
Nothing normal about it. Well not in the real world at least.

In clamshell I am at 45 max and laptop alone can go under 40 on idle.
Huge difference for zero activity.

Yep, this is exactly right. I can get my laptop to run with fairly low RPM in clamshell by having maybe one or two windows open and nothing else. But the minute I, like, use the CPU (lol, who would be so silly), it ramps up to 3500+ automatically and then higher usually unless I curtail using TBS or Volta. Today I was using chrome and ended up with 5 windows open, some music playing, slack and a couple other normal programs running and with my screen open I was literally stuck at max RPM for a while. I expect that maybe if I'm exporting 4k video or something, but not day to day work. I've had my AC On recently so didn't notice quite how loud that is. It's a disaster.
