He get the 5600M for free because of high temperatures? This would be insane... i think he paid the extra money right?

But we need to try! I don't want a laptop which gets extremally hot after 5 minutes. I didn't buy this very precious laptop to be unhappy with it.
Then return it. Easy. Much easier than fighting for a mythical fix that will never come.

They did it because he went through 5 returns and the problem was still not fixed. They cave after a long fight on customer support experience grounds. Not because they recognise any defect in the product. I don't know how much your time is worth but it's probably cheaper to just return it and buy the 5600m if that's what you want.

I fought for 1,5 years! with apple care and genius bar and had 3 repairs and they couldn't fix the problem (not just overheating). I got even from the genius bar a letter which proves my MBP 15 (for 4000€) is faulty and had at least one serious problem. But they said it can maybe fixed by MacOS updates and they cannot repair it and they don't want to replace it even it has Apple Care+.

And it took another few weeks and endless calls until they agreed to replace the MBP with MBP 16 and 5600M but i have to pay 850€ upgrade costs.

So i'm really surprised they will replace it with a free 850€ upgrade. Maybe it depends on the country but at least here i think it would be impossible.

Everyone who has ever worked in customer support, for example me during my time at university, knows that there will never be the same customer treatment. No matter what the companies say. Especially persistent people, because they want to invest the time and anger, reach their goal faster. The nice guy doesn’t. I'm not surprised when someone gets a free upgrade after an odyssey. Freedom for both sides. But I'm not telling you anything new.

How i can return my MBP after 14 days?

A long fight with support. Jump through all their hoops politely and give them every opportunity to fix the problem by repair or replacement. Be open minded even if you are sure their suggestions won't work. When it still doesn't work ask for a refund or replacement with upgrade (to 5600m). You'll almost certainly have to pay for the upgrade. If you hit a dead end with support try again with an executive liaison by emailing tcook@apple.com to escalate on the grounds of non or unsatisfactory resolution of the problem.

Nobody ever said it was easy or guaranteed.

I can just say just because my overheating problem they would never care here. You can cry, you can dance or be angry whatever even if you call them 2000 times. They will say you "It's inside the specification - no fix - no repair - no replacement". 45C on the touchbar surface is ok while idling for them. Maybe if you consult a lawyer and invest a lot of money and time you will get a chance....

The only reason they agreed because my wifi crashed every 30-60minutes and i had to reboot or cycle wifi multiple times a day. And this was confirmed from genius bar at their repair shop. But even here it took still months until they had to accept this is not in any specification and it has to be solution for this.
Spoke for ours even with manager but e.g. the apple center refused any help here. They just said they tried to repair it and they couldn't so there is nothing else to do.... And after hours of calls with apple care super visors they had to admit they have to do sth....

Nice guy or bad guy and don't think this would have made any difference here except a good lawyer.

My understanding of this issue is that this definitely occurs with the 5300M and 5500M, but not with the 5600M. Is there any CPU when combined with the 5300M or 5500M, doesn't cause this issue? or is this issue not CPU related at all?

The reason I ask is that I was looking at the base MacBook Pro 16, but the upgrade to the 5600M to prevent this issue is 800 GBP. Just wondering if there is a cheaper solution to solve this? I just want a machine that works (in peace).

Clamshell mode or work without tools like istat which displays the temperature and fan speed.

I tend to work in Clamshell mode, but on my friends machine (Base model) the fans still go off with 3 tabs open in Chrome on basic websites (no YouTube or anything I would consider CPU/GPU extensive).

Checking in .... so they finally fixed the issue but it costs $850 extra and in the meantime they announced that the MBP will be dramatically changing fairly soon? Hilarious.

At this point I just wish my model had more storage ... but given how much I travel these days, I should just finally set up a NAS.

Just got my 5600m and so far so good. Its super quiet when connected to external 4k display. Have not fully tested any taxing tasks yet

When you get a chance can you test it on a 4K YouTube video for about 5-10 mins. Can I ask what CPU you have?

My MBP is absolutely silent. Don‘t let it make you crazy, Apple sells millions of units a year.

Too late - I have a base unit MacBook Pro from my friend (factory reset) and ordered a Dell XPS 15 7590 (Core i7-9750H / nvidia GTX 1650). On having the same few tabs open in Chrome the Dell has a slight hum and the MacBook is going nuts. I just don't understand it and I hate fan noise.

I really want the MacBook, but can't justify the additional 800 GBP on an already expensive machine, when in my opinion this shouldn't be an issue (on basic tasks - heavy load is another matter).

Every manufacturer sometimes sells a few lemons, check out the comments at the xps. Not everybody is happy there either.

Agree - Dell seems to have various issues whereas the MacBook has just this one, which is why I'm hoping there is a cheaper solution than buying a machine with 5600M. But at the same time I acknowledge that if there is no other solution I may have to bite the bullet and pay up.

Short answer ”no”. The heat dissipation is due to the video memory clocking. 5600M has faster HBM which seems to allow it to run cooler.

Of course the 18W is far from the maximum heat dissipation of the 16“ which can reach 100W. So your total system load will determine how high the temperature of your system and hence the fan speed.

Thank you - now I need to decide whether I want to pay the extra £800 for the 5600M or go with another system.

Maybe consider an eGPU as a cheaper option than paying £800 for the 5600M upgrade.

I did consider this briefly, but didn't like the idea of how much extra space it would require.

I think I'm just going to pay the extra £800. If I got another system with Windows it will depreciate faster and I will have an OS that I'm less comfortable with.

I wouldn't say its cheaper. You have to buy a razor X core for 300-400€ + RP 5700 XT for another 400€.
And this is even slower than the RP5600M and has some limitations because you need to transfer the data always through TB.

It is what you can find on youtube as well its not recommended to use eGPU over the 5600M

Hi All,

I recently picked up a MacBook Pro 16" laptop (16GB/512GB SSD/AMD 5300M 4GB GPU) and have been dealing with high temperatures and inconsistent thermal control by Catalina 10.15.5 and 10.15.6. I'm working from home given the pandemic situation and have been running the MacBook with the clamshell open & connected to an external AOC 32" 1440p monitor via HDMI at 75Hz.

I spent quite a number of hours reading this thread and I appear to have a slightly worse problem than all of you:

When the computer is in normal use with the external monitor, the fan is running at about 2,700 RPM & the CPU is around 59C.

Aside from the sweaty typing situation, I have the added excitement of a spinning ball issue and a 1-3x a day crash that appears to be due to a runaway thermal situation. I installed Macs Fan Control last week to monitor the situation and today I happened to be watching when the spinning ball issue started. The reported CPU PECI temperature was a full 100C and the fans were not yet spinning at full speed. I left the computer in this state and the fans brought the temps down to about 83C before the machine crashed to a black screen and rebooted itself. This has been the normal MO of this machine since I received it, and it's maddening.

I swapped over to using a DisplayPort cable as a test and the laptop heat issue doesn't disappear like others on this thread have reported. Running the external monitor at 60Hz doesn't really make a difference in heat or stop the crashes that I'm seeing.

I didn't see anyone else with actual crash issues, or are some of you seeing similar instability?

did you turn off Power Nap. I had similar problems until I did that.
