I also feel like it is a waste having a 16" MBP when you have externals attached to it.
And I wish people would stop belittling anyone whose use case is different from their own. I subscribe to updates to this thread so I can check on new and relevant (!) information, not whether you - or anyone else, for that matter - thinks I am "wasting" my 16" MBP by hooking up external displays to it. You obviously know very little about graphic design, video editing or development/programming and the ergonomic requirements surrounding these fields, so why not just leave people be?

Or do you see me making snide comments because you aren't using an expensive external display?

Heres a question. The LG Ultrafine monitors are able to be daisy chained if you have (2).

Would the (2) displays run better if you plugged one in to either side of the MBP versus daisy chaining them?

My thought process is when daisy chaining you are pushing (2) displays with one BUSS port versus separating them to one each.

Thoughts? Would it run cooler?

It also makes the laptop much, much slower!

Actually, no - it doesn't (to a point). I regularly work with very high res 200mb+ Photoshop files, and I notice no performance degradation by disabling turbo boost.

Same with editing 4k video in Premiere. If I didn't know that turbo boost had been disabled, I wouldn't have noticed a difference in performance.

However - rendering 4k video out of Premiere is another story. Rendering time is faster with turbo boost enabled.

Is this issue present in mojave or just in catalina?
The 16-inch MacBook Pro (MacBookPro16,1 / A2141) will not (*) boot from a Mojave disk.

(* - Going by Apple's behavior in the past, the 16" MBP will never officially support Mojave, but who knows... industrious folk might of course be able to put together an unofficial way of running Mojave on the 16".)

I've got following macbook pro 16"
About_This_Mac_and_16__is_HOT___NOISY_with_an_external_monitor_______MacRumors_Forums_-_Vivaldi.png

My monitor is Dell S2716DG Display (1440p, 144Hz refresh rate)

I do have a problem with external monitor connected. I am connecting it through hdmi to usb-c (thunderbolt?) connection, it instantly starts to heat up and fans spin up, "Radeon high side" goes to 18-22W. It is a little better in clamshell mode but almost the same.

Today I got a DP (display port) to usb-c (thunderbolt) cable and connected monitor using it. Initially no difference. I then changed the monitor refresh rate in the display settings to 144Hz and the power consumption went down to 6-10W in clamshell mode. No difference if it is open, still goes up to 18W.

Playing video on youtube (720p 60fps) raises power consumption to 18W+. Basically any actions changes the GPU power consumption between 7W to 18W.

This is IStats menu in clamshell mode @144Hz:

com_bjango_istatmenus_sensors_and_Item-0_and_Item-0_and_Item-0_and_Item-0_and_Item-0_and_Item-...png

To me this does not make any sense, how come it consumes more power @60Hz than @144Hz? I hope it is sowtware bug and gets fixed.

I received a base 16" today and am disappointed because it get's as hot as my 2017 with an external 4K monitor.

Is anybody else experiencing the same issue? I always work with external monitors and running on high resolution and this heating performance is upsetting. It's not cooler than the 2017 version in this respects.

Can you guys share your thoughts on this?

Thanks a lot!

Haven't had that problem with mine. But mine's an upgraded model - Core i9, 32 GB RAM, and Radeon 5500M 8 GB. I run three 4K displays plus the internal - (all at not-200%-scaling, thus more-GPU-intensive.) No massive CPU or GPU load, fans stay quiet. (Playing a 4K YouTube video while this screenshot was taken, among other tasks.

Check your Activity Monitor for tasks using too much CPU or GPU.

Now close your internal and watch your temp over the next 3 minutes. You will be surprised. I have two ultra fine 4k's in clamshell and I am at 46* with OS Mail, Messages,Safari, Chrome, Spotify, and Intel Power Gadget open.

I'm running lid closed now, no noticeable increase in temps. Always have Mail, Messages, Safari, and Chrome open. Added Activity Monitor, Intel Power Gadget, Macs Fan Control (same as previous screenshot.) Playing same YouTube video as before - and I'm even a few degrees cooler right now.

Try the same setup with only ONE monitor connected (clamshelled) and you will see the difference in temps.

Thats what I was getting at. It runs cooler without the internal driving.

So what are you guys doing with all of this known? Sticking to clamshell or allowing the higher temps and using the internal as well?

I'm working in clamshell mode while connected to a 34" ultra wide display.

I really got tired of the 60-70s temps... Plus I do all my work these days on Citrix connected to the cloud with Windows VMs so no point in stressing about this anymore

So for the first time since having my (2) Ultrafine 4k's on this 16" MBP I booted into bootcamp and ran Solidworks, during program startup I am hitting 80's and 90's.

Once program loads it will lull down to 70's...as soon as I open a part and begin rotating it or extruding it etc the temps will jump into 80's and even into mid to high 90's.

Seriously considering uninstalling bootcamp if this is going to hit the longevity of my MBP over time. Such a shame Apple does not put more emphasis into running bootcamp more efficiently.

Thoughts?

I have a 16" with 64GB RAM....i9...its maxed out....I should be able to run a program like Solidworks just fine in a VM with my specs? I bet it would run cooler than bootcamp!

Every time I attempt to use bootcamp fans just go crazy, I think there's something wrong with the fan profiles and controller while using Windows

Sadly haven't had much luck with this issue.

I have an i9, everything is perfectly fine and relatively quiet enough until I use an external monitor.

I got this for audio production, and if I have everything plugged in (charging, mouse, keyboard, audio interface) and a full project in Ableton, I can hear the fans, but they aren't blasting my ears loud. The moment I use an external display, no matter whats open, it automatically switches to Discrete graphics and sounds like an airplane. If there was a way to disable the external graphics I'd be fine, but even Apple support is useless on helping me figure that out.

When running macOS the MacBook Pro is using Apple's own optimized thermal profile. Under Windows the machine falls back on Intel's default profile, that's why the fans are so much more audible.

See Linus' review on YouTube - he presents extensive data to support his point, starting just about eight minutes into his review.

Someone in here running the latest macOS 10.15.4 Beta 5?
With my RX 5700 XT I experience increased power consumption in single screen mode as well now. Would be interesting to see if the MBP16 is affected as well. If so, please submit a bug report.

You can disable the dGPU only if you are on the internal monitor. External has to go through the Radeon. Bummer, I know.

I was looking forward to using mine in clamshell at home.

But I do recommend disabling the dgpu for using the built in monitor for audio production. I don’t know which DAW you’re using but Logic Pro forces the dgpu unless you disable it using a terminal command. Mine got a lot quieter and cooler once I forced the integrated graphics
