You can disable the dGPU only if you are on the internal monitor. External has to go through the Radeon. Bummer, I know.

I was looking forward to using mine in clamshell at home.

But I do recommend disabling the dgpu for using the built in monitor for audio production. I don’t know which DAW you’re using but Logic Pro forces the dgpu unless you disable it using a terminal command. Mine got a lot quieter and cooler once I forced the integrated graphics

I'm using Ableton, which also forces the dGPU. I do that for the internal monitor now, but obviously out of luck for external.

BUT. Yesterday I called Apple support.

Spent 90 minutes on the phone with a Senior Advisor, who gathered diagnostics, all my information, and sent it to engineering. By monday we should have a response, and hopefully will find out if it's an issue actively being looked at, or if they'll just blow smoke at me.

Mine is having the same issue. Base model with 32G Ram and 1T SSD. In my case, the MBP is running hot even in clamshell mode while connecting to a Dell 2K external monitor, about 60˚ - 70˚ and the GPU draws about 18w. Anyone have the same overheating issue even in clamshell mode?

The fans are normal on mine though, either in clamshell or not. I'm not running any heavy applications, just a couple tabs on chrome and Youtube or video playback.

I do. My monitor is Dell U2719dc. At default resolution in clamshell mode it is 60-70C. However, if you lower resolution to 1080p it will drop to 46-52C.

Good to know I'm not the only one... I would have got a 1080P monitor instead of a 2K if I knew about this before

It’s normal for a computer to get hot when it’s working hard--always has. Don’t tell us it’s on your lap when connected to an external display!
This is why Apple needs to separate the CPU from the display and keyboard on laptops! We need a portable Mac Mini that can run in a backpack and be connected to 4K monitors and usb devices, and a companion laptop that controls it wirelessly.

When running macOS the MacBook Pro is using Apple's own optimized thermal profile. Under Windows the machine falls back on Intel's default profile, that's why the fans are so much more audible.

See Linus' review on YouTube - he presents extensive data to support his point, starting just about eight minutes into his review.

Under Intel? makes sense

I got this for audio production, and if I have everything plugged in (charging, mouse, keyboard, audio interface) and a full project in Ableton, I can hear the fans, but they aren't blasting my ears loud. The moment I use an external display, no matter whats open, it automatically switches to Discrete graphics and sounds like an airplane. If there was a way to disable the external graphics I'd be fine, but even Apple support is useless on helping me figure that out.

Yeah, discrete gfx external monitor and Ableton is jet-engine even on my old mbp.

I'll be buying the next update of the mbp. I've been waiting yeeeeears for Apple to replace that butterfly keyboard and upgrade the standard SSD size. I use it for audio too.

I thought I would save a few grand by ordering the MBP 16" and the XDR versus the MP7,1 and the XDR
However, this thread is scaring me from clicking ORDER

I wouldn't buy it yet until and unless:
  1. There's a fix from Apple
  2. Your daily use-case strictly doesn't require an external monitor
This is an expensive machine, and if you read previous posts (and the username that opened this thread), Apple seems to have a history of not giving a f*** to these sorts of problems.

To sum up my experience, it sucks hard to spend ~6k on a premium MBP configuration from Apple, and not get these problems even acknowledged. I wouldn't buy it again.

WOW - it really is sad that Apple is ignoring their loyal customers

Your laptops aren't making any noise doing whatever work it is you do, without a monitor plugged in?

No, any software that activates the external graphics CPU powers the Radeon Highside up to 18-20W and causes the fans to turn up. This also happens without an external monitor.

That can't really be "fixed" that's how it works

my 2015 with integrated graphics runs cooler than my 2019, but my 2017 ran just as hot

Have a Late 2019 16" MBP, 32 GB, 5500M with 8 GB 1 TB. Noticed the fans running constantly when connected to my UHD Samsung Monitor; loaded iStat and have noticed the "Radeon High Side" voltage consistently at or over 19W and the fan speed consistently over 3500 rpm, just browsing the web.

I am awating OS 10.15.4, hopefully they are holding off on dropping it until they fix this issue. If it isn't fixed soon, this is going back to Apple.

I'm waiting for the new 14" MacBook Pro with no ext.GPU- no noise problems and I think the graphic speed is fast enough for me and it's a good compromise between weight and screenarea- and will sell my 16"

I sold my last one with the butterfly keyboard, I am not doing that again; Apple is going to take it back or I will speak with an attorney.

You mean dGPU, right?
