I'm thinking about buying a screen to use with my 16 incher in clamshell mode.
Does the 16 incher generate a lot of heat and fan noise while running in clamshell mode?

What screen do you guys recommend? Dell P2415Q?

It doesn't generate too much heat from what I've seen so far. I'm elevating the laptop by about an inch from the desk, so air can flow beneath it. I'm using a couple of cardboard children books to do the trick :D
My external display is a Samsung U28E590, it was launched a few years ago so I'm sure there are better displays out there now. I set mine to 2560x1440, the higher resolutions are too small.
My advice is getting a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, I tried with HDMI and Apple's adapter but was stuck with 30Hz, while I can run the display at 60Hz with the new cable.

Has anyone tried AirPlay (2?) to an Apple TV 4k connected to the monitor? And if so can it support resolution above 1080p?

I use Dell p2419hc, it works perfectly in clamshell mode (about 6W power consumption most of the time).
It also with USB-C, so you don't need to use any adapter.

So I'm on 10.15.5 beta (19F53f) and I went from over 19 watts Radeon high side all the time to 7.87 watts. The only setting I've changed is in SwitchResX I went to a non HiDPI setting. I use two external displays and have never seen it draw less than 19 watts until today.
In clamshell mode?

I have a Dell U2518D and it still pulls 18W in clamshell mode. 2560*1440 @60 HZ with HDMI cable connecting through the Twelve South StayGo hub. My usb-c to hdmi and usb-c to DP cables are on the way, and will test if that makes a difference.

So I just updated to 10.15.4. Seems like the heating issue is getting better for me. I'm still connecting through a hub, but now the temperature barely gets over 60, while GPU is still consuming 18-20W, and I'm not even in clamshell mode. Before the update, the same power consumption will instantly drive the heat to the mid 70s.

Was going to test the clamshell mode but run into the issue that seems like many people are experiencing: the moment I close the lid, the external monitor lose its signal...

I updated to 10.15.4 and most recently installed the supplemental update and I am seeing my temps hover around 60c and fans at 1760 rpm in clamshell mode.

I guess Apple start to care about the issue. Even though for many of us there weren't any issues with clamshell, there were scenarios that customers had issues in clamshell mode. But now it seems that Apple starts to do something, and they fixed now one scenario. Now they have to fix the scenario with the lid open.

Report watt usage, temperatures/rpms are too variable based on machine load, external temperature etc.

They didn't fix a thing, all the symptoms of flawed drivers are still there, I still get 18W with:
  • 2560x1440 60Hz USB-C > Displayport Cable - Clamshell
  • 2560x1440 60Hz USB-C > Displayport Cable - Open Lid
  • 2560x1440 60Hz USB-C Hub > HDMI Cable - Clamshell
  • 2560x1440 60Hz USB-C Hub > HDMI Cable - Open Lid
Tested on 10.15.4 Supplemental, 10.15.5 Beta 1. Kext versions haven't been touched since last year. As said in previous posts my only way to get it down to 5W is actually using the direct USB-C > Displayport Cable and upping frequency to 85-100-120-144Hz which is not an option on most monitor. Reports of 10.15.5 Beta 1 in the previous posts are flawed since disabling HiDpi through SwitchResX actually lowers resolution and is not suitable for most monitors.

We won't give users hope and Apple a rest on this issue.

Yep, no change here with supplemental update, at least in laptop open mode - 19.x W for Radeon, in 3840x1600 on an LG 38"

64GB RAM
1TB SSD
8GB AMD Radeon Pro 5500M
Mac OS Catalina 10.15.4 (Latest Supplemental Update)

The MacBook Pro is connected using an Anker USBC Multiport Adapter (HDMI to HDMI) to an Acer 1080p External Monitor.

During some relatively light Music Production on Logic Pro X I have noticed that the MBP definitely runs quite hot and the fans are also loud. I haven't run any tests etc. but I can definitely say that this was not the case with my previous MBP (15" MID 2015) which was used in a similar fashion.

I'm quite unhappy at the moment about this and I'm really hoping that it is something that can be fixed in a future software update.

Thanks

The more I hear about these thermal and fan issues when using an external monitor, the more I feel I should just spend a few K more and get the Mac Pro and update it every few years rather than buying the MBP 16" and buying a new one in 3 years after the heat costs it it's life span

Since you can afford Mac Pro, you can just buy an E GPU - it will fix the heat issues for less money.

I'd suggest that unless you need to do the sort of thing you need a 16" MacBook Pro for while on the go away from your office, a desktop is in general a better idea.

Desktop CPUs are faster, desktops cool better, desktops can have better GPUs due to the better cooling, etc.

Desktop for this sort of work should be the first choice and only spend big on a portable powerhouse if desktop is not an option.

Trying to use laptops (any of them, not just Macs) as a desktop replacement is generally more expensive, louder, hotter and slower than using a desktop for it.

I agree but I want a monitor bigger than my current 27" iMac;
The Mac Mini does not have any graphics power;
Mac Pro with XDR would be my choice if they would ever release the W5700X (I want the additional TB3 ports and the ability to have the XDR Display ports run at USB 3.0 rather than USB 2.0)

So, I am in a no man's land while my current iMac begins showing signs of aging

Guys returning my 16” due to this issue tomorrow , is there any point In trying my luck and ordering another Unit or Is it’s a software thing and there is no point ?
also Is there any configuration that is less likely to have this issue?

I would return if you are still in return window.

I agree, but a laptop gives you the ability to use the same machine in different places.
I have the 16" and most of the time it is in clamshell mode with a nice display, I'd say I use it 90% of the time connected to a display, but I like having a laptop for that 10% of times when I'm not working at my desk.
Another option would have been Mini for my desk and Air for working on the go, but I'd have spent more and Mini doesn't come with a great CPU/GPU.
iMac + Air would be a better option, but very expensive. In the end, using the 16" is a good compromise

I'd agree it is a compromise, I just disagree that it's a good one (rather than being a jack of all trades, the larger laptops are more "master of none") - and I don't agree that the cheaper air plus iMac is particularly expensive vs. a 16" that will in any way compete with a 27" iMac, even whilst making more noise, with a smaller display :D

edit:
as an amusing aside, my 2020 air is totally silent when plugged into a 4k display :D
