Are you happy with that? 60c seems a little hight at idle for a single external monitor in clamshell?

Mine is exactly the same. Clamshell with apps running but no video. Temp is 62C, fans are 1,800rpm, Radeon 5.5W. Running silent.

I'm definitely sticking with clamshell mode despite the compromises mentioned earlier today. My experience on MS Teams calls has been significantly improved.

So i also tried clamshell mode for the first time the last few days. Here are my findings in idle:

MBP: 16" Base model

My external monitor: DELL P2421DC via USB-Connection (left side of MBP) in 2048x1152 HiDPI custom resolution.

Clamshell:
- Radeon High Side: < 7W
- Fans: below 2.000 rpm, 95%: 1.800rpm (silent)
- Temperature: 50c

I have nothing to complain about here. Works perfect and as expected.

Open lid:
- Radeon High Side: 18w
- Fans: 1.800 rpm - 2.500 rpm, about 90%: 2.200 rpm
- Temperature: 60 c

Area above the Touchbar is noticeably hot, rest of the machine feels warm, but fans are silent most of the time. I just don't know how an average temperature of 60c will affect longevity of this machine. Drawing 18w in idle just doesn't feel right for me, although fan noise (and speed) is acceptable for me.

I wish I had a second external monitor for some more testing (another P2421DC would be ideal). You might noticed I don't run my monitor in default resolution (2560x1440) and I enabled HiDPI-Mode, but I think the numbers in clamshell are really good. Would be interesting to see the Radeon High Side with 2x external montiors running in HiDPI.

BTW: It's just me but native 2560x1440 resolution looks absolutely horrible and fuzzy in MacOS. I could never use that.
I have the same numbers here at 1440 in both scenarios. I will play with SwitchResX to lower the W in the open mode though.

I think 60C is high on clamshell mode if dGPU is only drawing ~5W. However mine is a 5300M and temp is usually <39-45C at idle or browsing with fan <1850rpm and my ambient temp is in the high 20Cs - probably 28-30C.

60C is totally normal, even on clamshell. You should start worrying If you start seeing 75-80C+ when idle.
So I can basically use my machine with lid open since it's at 60c idle? What about battery temperature? Mine is constantly at 36-37c with lid open and it seems a little bit high comparing it to other iStat Menu screenshots of this thread.

60C is normal, don’t worry about that. The thing you have to worry about is that since the GPU is consuming more watts it could result into higher temperatures (70-90C) more easily, but If this doesn’t happen and the temperature is kept low, then you have nothing to worry about.

Done. Thank you very much for this thread. Hopefully it will help us all to fix this problem.

Can you add "Macbook Pro" to the heading? Because 16" alone is slightly meaningless.

Has anyone with 5600M share more screenshots of iStat (temps and watts) when idle + external display connected (at least 1 hour) and not in clamshell? Many thanks!

Thread in AMD support forum is already gone.🤔

Wow...

It's still there, it just went back to moderation because I changed the thread title as requested. I'm sure you'll be able to see it again soon.

UPDATE: 5 hours later and they still haven't moderated it yet. I'll send them a request to speed it up... by snail mail of course. lol

I just installed Macs Fan Control (I don't have a license for iStat), and currently my CPU cores are sitting at 49-50 deg C, GPU's at around 46-48 deg C (and battery around 22 deg C), and fans are running basically on their minimum (1850 and 1700). Now I haven't been using it much this morning, so it hasn't been on for long, but I have to say that I NEVER hear my fan speed unless I am doing a Video Render which is pushing the CPU and GPU. Most of the time I have my 16" MacBook Pro hooked up to a Dell P2415Q 4K Monitor through a CalDigit TS3+ Dock (plugged into the right-hand side of my MBP), and the laptop in OPEN position because I use that screen too.

Perhaps the 5600M draws less power and therefore is less of an issue? I haven't even disabled Turbo Boost or done anything else to it - it is a stock standard 2.4Ghz i9 with 32GB RAM and the 5600M.

Perhaps I am just lucky? But if you are hearing fans when your MBP is at idle then I would be taking it back to Apple - something doesn't sound right.

There is a new Max Tech YouTube video that confirms the 5600M does not ramp up fans when connected to the XDR.

Thanks, are those temps with External monitor and lid open? I think the power draw is much lower due to drivers. When I close the lid and the power goes down I have exactly your temps with my 5500m. I think the drivers are messed up for 5300/5500m, because on windows boot camp it draws less W in the same setup as one of the readers checked. My mbp fans newer spins with external monitor when idle but it would be great to have lower temps.

Yes, those temps are with the external monitor and lid open.
One thing that does probably help is I have my MacBook Pro on a Rain Design mStand (so it is elevated with the vent holes completely clear from anything else, but even before I had it on the stand, it was still keeping cool and no loud fans. I have come from a 2014 MacBook Pro, which used to get much hotter, and I could hear the fans when it was hot, but it wasn't excessive (this new one seems better at keeping cool and lower use of the fans).

Thought I follow up on life with one monitor inverted...

It's been fine apart from looking a bit odd. The bottom bezel on the monitor is bigger than the top so the case of the monitors don't line up if the LCDs do...

Thanks for the update - I just checked and my two main monitors are very nearly symmetrical vertically, apart from the logo & model number decals. If the 180 degree thing does the trick for me, I'll just sharpie them out (or scrape them off) and all should look fine.

Such an absurd solution, but it makes me somewhat optimistic (naively?) for a software update at some point. Probably not a "fix" as such, but at least an improvement.

Some of it does seem to be a software bug to me. Some may just be limitations in downclocking. It makes no sense to me why rotating one display makes a difference. If anything, it creates more work for the GPU and I can't see how it has anything to do with monitor sync frequencies. The only thing I can think is it triggers a different path through the logic and avoids a bug. Note to self.. must try both monitors inverted tomorrow and see what happens to GPU power.

Hi All, I figured I would try the 5600M to see if it makes a difference. I will report back after the initial indexing and such.... But I have an issue. I used migration assistant from my previous 16" (i9,16GB, 1TB model) and the sensor data isn't available for the new one (it still shows on my previous 16). The new one just shows the SSD... Do I need an updated version of iStats just for this machine?

Thanks,

So... if I invert both my 4K monitors I get low GPU power usage... As opposed to around 20W when both monitors in standard rotation. Crazy.

This is a bug. Got to be.
Well unless they designed the GPU to play ok with rotated monitors...

Question though. How do you get the Samsung drives to appear in stats?

Crazy indeed... Out of desperation I tried this myself, but didn't work for me with any resolution/orientation combination. I'd have gladly flipped my monitors to mitigate the issue. *sigh*

I'd also like to note that I've tried everything on this thread with my 5500m 4GB to no avail with any of my 3 1440p monitors: 2x Asus PG279QZ, 1x Acer H277HU. I also have the GPU panics that occur everytime I wake the computer from sleep with an external peripheral. Things I've tried:

- SwitchResx custom config
- Different adapters / ports
- Reinstalling OS; Erase & not erase existing content

Really hoping this could be formally acknowledged by Apple in the near future.
