So Calif
I just checked my Apple store order status and I noticed it says "STANDARD DELIVERY".

Usually it's overnight from China via UPS isn't it ??
Or am I just spoiled as my M1 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro came overnight UPS Express...

I hope I get the iMac on the 21st....

Same here, there wasn’t an ‘express delivery’ option, just the standard one when i ordered the stuff (Hungary).

Mine also says standard delivery for the same range of dates. Iirc standard was the only option they offered cuz I tried to pay for faster shipping for a green one before I said screw it and got the blue

I have the 16" MBP as well but don't want to sell it as I put in over $2500 including Apple Care.

Would hate to see how much it's worth even though I don't use it anymore...
Was in similar dilemma, the advice i got was passionate on both sides. I use desktop more often and have old iPad Pro if in a pinch, but i know not the same as mbp. I will get a relatively low price mba if i need to be more mobile. I didn’t use 16 mbp as a desktop replacement so the 16 was overkill and heavy to be carrying. Hope this helps. Will get ~$1700 on trade so bit the bullet.

My card was also charged today and delivery is still shown as May 21-27. If I'm not mistaken, all brand new Apple hardware releases are shipped overnight so maybe that's why "standard deliver" is the only option.

There are a whole bunch of possibilities, but you can at least do some basic tests to see where the problem is most likely.

Some thoughts....

Firstly, there is nothing wrong with 8Gb RAM, but the important thing to remember is that the more RAM, the more apps can be open at any given time without slowing the system, so try using the system with the fewest apps/windows open. Also, as macOS has been updated, it gets bigger and bigger, so uses more and more RAM just for itself.

Wifi and internet speeds can be tested reasonably easily with online speed tests, and you might have two possible issues: firstly your internet service, if DSL will be very slow anyway, and if cable you may be suffering 'choking' just because of the amount of data traffic on the node that provides service to you (there can be a large number of different customers sharing a single node, which is why cable is usually quote as '...up to...' speeds). Secondly, your wifi access point/router may be running slowly. This can happen if it's relatively old, or if there are a number of others using it.

1Tb fusion drives have relatively small SSD components in comparison to 2 and 3 Tb units, but while they are not as data efficient as the larger drives, are usually sufficient unless the drive itself is getting very full. The 1Tb drives do have a reputation for relatively slow performance compared to the larger drives but this would normally only be particularly notable if you were doing a lot of large-file saves, or running a large number of apps at the same time - this latter is important because like other systems, Macs use the hard drive as temporary storage, known as 'caching' or 'paging', which happens more and more as more apps are open and less memory is available.

Even if the SSD part of the fusion drive isn't enough, the rest of the drive is a standard 7200rpm unit, which for normal purposes isn't all that bad in performance, but can hit the system badly with caching/paging because the hard drive is a great deal slower than the system's in-built RAM.

One point I think you made was that you saw a lot of speed issues when accessing iCloud - beachballing. While that could be a drive issue, it likely isn't because even a slow laptop drive can throughput more data than a typical wifi+cable internet, which means that I would doubt the drive is the sole culprit.

If I owned a Mac that was performing as seemingly badly as this, I would back it up using (preferably SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner) and then restore it to 'as new', before reinstalling apps and data form the backup. If nothing else, this would help remove the possibility that macOS has been compromised by data errors.
Thank you ... so much! I am trying to test some things. Over the last couple of days I have installed a M1 MacMini ... I am going to try to test using the same network and the same operation that gave me the spinning beachball. Throwing money at the problem ... not really, because I planned to replace my Intel machines with M1s, anyway.

Here's my feeble attempt to use Apple's AR tool to simulate what my new iMac will look like on the desk, compared to my old 27" model. Brings up a question, are the keyboard and mouse going to be light gray like the screen bezels or is this just a lighting illusion? View attachment 1770407

My current 27" iMac is about 2" too tall such that I can't close my rolltop desk. Based on the dimensions they advertise, I should now be able to finally close my rollmop when not in use.

It's not the RAM - my 2012 and 2019 iMacs both have base 8GB RAM and that is not the issue - it's the spinning HDD inside that slows everything down.

Why Apple kept putting spinning HDD or silly Fusion drives behooves me!

What I did to vastly speed up the iMacs: external Thunderbolt SSDs.

Both machines are fitted with these SSD on the Thunderbolt ports and boots OS from them. I then wiped and formatted the internal drive as non bootable APFS drive for storage / archive use.

Now they are screamingly fast - much better than the silly spinning internal drive.

For my 2019 iMac - LaCie TB SSD w/ TB3-2 adapter:

This is exactly why I pre-ordered the base iMac - I have already tested all my apps and browser habits on a M1 Mini from 6 months ago.

Even after testing all the features I need to use, the M1 Mini is still blazing fast, no app opening delays, no spinning beach balls, even Rosetta2 is quick..

To help pay for the incoming M1 iMac, I am selling off some Intel Macs this weekend: 2014 Mini w/ SSD, 2019 13" MBP, 2015 15" MBP quad i7 that I have loved for so long.

I guess the M1 has got me so I am switching over everything to the new Apple Silicon!

Three M1 Macs being put in place. Three more Intel Macs to turn in for Apple Silicon. I am never going to turn in my 1984 Mac!

I haven't had much time to test things with the M1 mini ... I anticipate after hearing so many good things that it will be a great experience. I am trying to only run Apple Silicon applications (don't want to install Rosetta2).
Also, although I'm not really a developer, I am happy that I can now run type Float16 on the M1 compared to Float on my Intel Mac. Simple things make me happy!

Thank you for writing down all these ideas ... I have been so busy grading that I haven't been able to track down issues.

Based on my M1 Mini experience the past 6 months, no you don't need the 16GB.

If you want to eventually future proof it longer or start editing 4K / 8K video then the 16GB would be a good reason.

8GB runs just fine for what I do on my M1 Mini: (20+ tabs x 3 browsers), dual displays (WQHD + 4K), USB Superdrive DVD burn/read DL discs, photo & video/audio edit (Adobe CC), Soundblaster DAC, external dual TB1 1TB SSD, and wired ethernet.
All that and it runs cold (fan never spins up), snappy app opening, no more spinning beach ball, etc...

That's why I ordered the base iMac 8GB/256GB w/ Ethernet & full size keyboard options along with the EDU Pro Apps Bundle.

Comparing 2 M1 machines, I am going to try the Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro on the iMac and watching how their native apps work with the M1 iMac compared to my Mini.
This is all good to know ... that the M1 can do so much. Even with my usage being much less intensive, I am still changing over to M class chips.

On my account the charge is pending but not actually posted yet. It usually takes a few days anyway after the transaction.

Yeah I think my bank dropped the authorization hold after 3 days. Here’s hoping Apple recharges when it’s getting ready to ship. My order still shows the same thing and they haven’t emailed me saying there was an issue so hopefully everything is all good

Don’t waste your time worrying about pending charges. These vary depending on so many factors, and give very little actual indication as to what is happening behind the scenes.

Macrumors order threads are full of people stressing about pending charges, calling Apple, calling their bank, just to find that everything is absolutely fine.
