Are you going to order the new iPhone 14?

My first iPhone was a 3GS. It was the first iPhone that one could buy and use in Vermont. At the time Cingular/ATT was the only carrier iPhones could use, and in Vermont, ATT didn’t have a license or any service/towers. You could go over the border to NY and buy one with a NY address, but then it was only 2G Roaming service. Just before the 3GS launch, if I remember correctly, ATT bought one of the small local legacy wireless carriers in order to get a foothold into the state, and as a part of the deal, were required to keep the previous local Unicel stores as corporate AT&T stores for a certain number of years.

After seeing the fun people were having lining up and camping out at iPhone launches before that, I decided to head down to the local newly minted AT&T store at around 6 am, just in case it was mobbed, and because I thought it would be fun to “camp out in the line". As the store was officially a corporate AT&T store, which at the time was a designation reserved for only the largest flagship stores in big cities, the corporate office had sent out a large pile of bound procedures to be followed, including arrival of all the employees at 4 am, how to lay out the queues and signage, as well as hiring and sending 2 extra security guards for the day etc. This really amused the 3 employees of this small strip mall store in Bennington VT, but they dutifully put up the signs and sent one of the guards out for donuts, as they otherwise had nothing to do.

When I arrived at 6 am, the laughing ATT employees let me in, we had a few donuts and coffee, and they assured me that while they didn’t have a lot of 3GS’s in stock (like 6) - they did had the one I was looking for. At 7:50 am they sent me back outside to formally line up for the official 8 am opening. At the stroke of 8, with great fanfare they let the massive line (me) into the store, sold me the phone, and I had one of the first iPhones legally sold and serviced in Vermont.

Me in "line" at 7:50 am 6/19/2009 - taken with my iPhone 3GS by an ATT employee 10 minutes before I "bought" it.

I absolutely love this story, what a great memory!!

Ordered the iPhone 14 Pro Max Gold. Showing a ship date of October 10th - 17th. Just out of curiosity, I know in some cases in the past launches that the dates have improved beyond what you might’ve originally have been told. Do you think that’ll be the same this year? Or am I stuck waiting until October?

(I’m posting this again just to see if anyone else knows anything. I apologize for the double post. I just want my new iPhone already. Just like the rest of you!)
From working for Apple and ordering products for years Apple's motto has always been to under promise and over deliver. I bet it will come early. how early? that's the question..

Unless there is a reason to bring them state-side before the Weds/Thurs overnight sort (labor issues, bad wx forecast, political risk, etc), it's WAY cheaper to keep as much of the inventory (once it is bulk packed on pallets for import and can be torn down into/onto domestic trunk routes from Lousiville to regional distribution and local sort) at a massive, low per-cubic-foot/low labor cost facility in a foreign trade zone in CN or even KR than anywhere state-side, because very few local facilities have any spare space and you'd be surprised, Louisville is a massive complex but nearly every square foot is used and allocated, there just isn't space to hold these, sometimes at any cost per cu/ft (esp if they haven't cleared customs yet and they need to reside in an actual FTZ state-side, which is even more scarce space).

Keep in mind we’re talking about Apple here.

They could have leased space to hold shipments for this state side at World Port.

But I expect these devices will clear customs before the plane even lands and once they land UPS is immediately pulling them off the pallets and putting them through the normal sorting flow so they end up at the last mile UPS facility. As volumes are up everywhere so I don’t see them wanting them to just sit in World Port for any longer than they have to.

I think the “transit” delays in getting them to the US is all around Apple controlling their costs some. UPS can overnight packages from China to the East Coast… So UPS can be fast if they are paid to be.

This is the extent of my tracking. Not sure how everyone else is seeing more info.

Address changed...diverting to neighbor across the street. Son #2 will swing by there as soon as it is delivered and overnight to me...guess I'm paying for that.

Can't wait to move to my permanent address in a few weeks...last one until I hit the old folks home, hopefully. 💀
Question is Are you going to upgrade with us next year?

I'm trying to divert my delivery to a UPS Store for pickup, because I expect I'll be at work when it arrives. I went to UPS My Choice, but they want to charge me $5.99 for this change. Is there anyway to get around the charge? I mean, I'm actually asking them to do less work. :/
