Side-by-Side qualifying lap comparison from F1 feed.

Max was behind until the Swimming Pool and then made it all up in the final handful of corners.

I stand by my belief Max just drove a better final sector and Peter Windsor agrees.
It had nothing to do with bad driving by Alonso.

If Alonso was driving a Red Bull, Alonso would not have lost so much time there, as Red Bull dominates Aston Martin in Sector 3 all the time.

Put them both in an RBR or an Aston, and I still say Max would have taken it. But at this point, it is not worth continuing to argue so I am done. :)

I guess Alonso needs some driving lessons from Max and Perez since according to MacRumours that is why the Red Bulls are so much faster than Aston Martin.

To fix the straight line speed of Mercedes, Lewis and Russell needs to get driving lessons from Max and Perez too as Max and Perez having this straight line speed by driving better.

Looking at the qualifying comparison between Alonso and Verstappen and Fernando was ahead the entire lap until Rascasse. He was effectively pipped in the second to last corner and just about lost out. That straight line speed of the Red Bull made it impossible for him to cut back despite a better corner exit. Super impressive by Fernando I have to say, nearly 42 years old and absolutely smashing it.

I agree, and even Alonso agreed. It was lovely to see them together.

And Lewis did a similar thing to get out of the elimination zone. Managed to find a bit extra when it mattered.

Shame for Pérez, that was some slam into that wall.

But overall, It's so close on that circuit. I'm excited about this afternoon.

When Max drives better (by 0.02 of a second) that doesn't mean Alonso was driving badly. ;) They both drove incredible, as did most of the grid.

Let’s be honest, the difference in times is minuscule, literally nothing. Says a lot when it comes down to milliseconds in how positions are decided.

It appears to me that the RB is faster. Monaco is a hard track to discern top line speed.

The rest of the season RB has won going away and there is always a chance they could do it at Monaco if the track somehow opens up, i.e. due to attrition. Fewer cars on the track equals more open space.

Not to argue, but that miniscule time difference adds up over the course of the race even without any interference. And if anyone behind them encounters any difficulty passing, or in pit stops, of course it's going to be increased. The last time I remember* anyone having a runaway race there was Damon Hill in 1996** and then his engine blew. Again, it's hard to get space/distance in Monaco.

* Probably a few more in recent times but I am usually focused on the back markers because more often than not my fave drivers aren't in fast cars. ;)

** In 1996 I believe the cars were much/somewhat smaller than now...

Your talking about the race, I was just referring to the qualifying, then that time difference is nothing. They are so close.
But yes it builds up over the race, maybe not at Monaco though. The best thing is Alonso in second place. If Max fumbles the start then Aston may have a chance.

Leclerc dropped to 6th.

Unfortunate decision by Fred to go on mediums instead of inters when the moisture started. Could have made it a race. P2 is well deserved. Mr. Consistent.
5 Podiums in 6 races. His enthusiasm is contagious.

P3 for Ocon. Great result. Great drive.

W14 looks quite a bit better, but needs better balance for rear grip, IMO. We will know for sure at Barcelona.

Master Class by Max. Covered every condition. Not much else to say other than another P1 for Honda Power. 😏

Alonso evidently asked if Inters might be better, but the rain was only in Casino Square at the time so the team went with Mediums. Of course, by the time he'd come around after his out lap, it was everywhere and increasing in intensity and Inters had become mandatory so he had to pit again along with Ocon and everyone else (Max having already completed his stop).

Not sure he could have jumped Max if Aston had put him on Inters, but he at least would not have been over 20 seconds behind once Max had done his stop so he might have been able to challenge as conditions improved.

Agreed.

I enjoyed that race. Track position and strategy was all part of it. And then it rained. A very clean race also. Amazing driving by all.

Thank goodness for the rain. Just about made it entertaining. But the top three finished how they qualified.
Fair play that no one binned it in the rain (or dry). No SC or even VSC in a wet Monaco is pretty rare.

I was just hoping Max would bin it. Funny when he was screaming inters!
I was hoping no driver would bin it. Why would anyone enjoy a crash?

Radio message of the day has to be Carlos Sainz, who reacted agitated to his engineer exclaiming “Forget about Hamilton, he is weak”. Closely followed by Yuki who went “Do you want me to crash?”.

Then Indy500.... not sure the 500 means, seems to be either 500 restarts, 500 crashes or 500 000 angry ex F1 supporters.. What an insane race.. Just why it takes a month a bit beyond me...

Well I'm pretty sure he doesn't mean a serious crash. Ironically @Apple fanboy and @The-Real-Deal82 used ot get on to me for saying that about Mercedes ...

And as a fan backmarkers, binning it is the only hope for a decent result most of the time for those teams. That or a tire war and nobody wants that.

RB having a failure or a wreck is literally the only hope for the rest of the field.

Anywho ... I would have loved for Aston Martin to go with inters the first time Alonso stopped...
