The FIA has applied a three-place grid penalty for Sergio Perez at the Spanish Grand Prix for driving his "severely damaged car" back to the pits and leaving debris along the track behind him. Red Bull Racing has also been fined €25,000 for instructing Perez to return the car to the pits so as to not trigger a Safety Car for an on-track recovery.

Wow! So they’d rather he stopped and caused a safety car to be used and ruin everyone else’s race instead. What a crazy ruling.

Not at all. You shouldn’t be driving a car in an unsafe condition. The safety car is for safety it shouldn’t matter if someone’s race is ruined.
Let’s face it if RB hadn’t been in the race they would have told him to stop so they minimised any further financial damage. They were in the race so took the risk of punishment.

But nothing happened? Nothing fell off the car, maybe if it did you could punish them, but this is punishment by hindsight for no real reason.

But he’s punished for driving an unsafe car not for having something fall off.
The team broke the rules and got the benefit of breaking the rules and now take what is a minor punishment.

Perez did shed parts as he trundled back and if the entire rear wing element had fallen off the car it could have caused a significant accident if it did so in a high-speed corner where an oncoming car might not have seen it until it was on top of it.

That is why the FIA tagged both the driver and the team with penalties/fines to discourage such behavior in the future by a team and/or a driver.

Apologies I assumed Perez was out of the race at that point, not returning to the pits for repairs. My bad.

No problem. As it was the others were given a few opportunities to beat Max, and Max still won, just. Not sure if they did roll out another safety car it would have made much difference to that?

No idea, probably not as Max found the balance in that Red Bull finally anyway. I had assumed Perez retired due to the rear wing damage as that is usually the case due to it being a lengthy job to repair during a race, he would have been sanctioned due to the size and risk of the damage I think. Its a bit different to a missing front wing that has already come off the car and the bits I saw, the rear wing was just sitting on top of the back of his car. Not something you want falling off at a high speed track like Canada. I suggested Red Bull were playing the game because I assumed they ordered him to return to the pits even though he was retiring to prevent a SC.

Lando impressed me the most on Sunday, when he gets the car underneath him, he's going to be a force in the coming years I think.

Max wasn’t the fastest him and red bull just executed extremely well.
Another safety car could totally have made a difference.
I’m not anti max here he deserved the win but that doesn’t change the facts.

Its not a strong word at all and goes part and parcel with the sport. All teams cheat, lets not go all Singapore 2008 with the context of that word as that would be ridiculous.

I disagree gaming the system is part of the sport. Cheating is something different.
Its like in football taking a professional foul isn’t really cheating it’s just gaming the system.

Red Bull read the situation better than the other teams and fortune went their way with pit stops etc. Max did what he had to do and other drivers stood out as driving well behind him.

We'll agree to disagree on that then, not going to go into the semantics of it and how we interpret different words etc. I also didn't say Red Bull 'cheated' which is worth noting.

Lando already has the car under him I think. at least he can see Max when they finish now. Just needs a bit more push, so glad we have a proper battle this year, finally. Let’s hope next year is the same then all bets are off for 2026 with all the new engines etc.

Take it with whatever amount of seasoning you wish, but Reddit Rumor Mills say that Kimi Antonelli is confirmed at AMG Mercedes and Ollie Bearman is confirmed at Haas. And Ollie's teammate at Haas might very well be Zhou, who is said to be offering up to $30 million in direct sponsorship monies.

I believe it all apart from Zhou.
I don’t think Zhou is awful and he can do a job but he isn’t a team leader.
If it does happen then I can only assume they’ve lost a lot of sponsors with Gunther’s leaving the team.
