LOL, I was thinking the same thing. You seem to get news stories for every little perceived issue, whether widespread and/or genuine or not, but I haven't seen a thing about this - nor the broken playlists and podcast support, for that matter - despite big threads about it on here and pretty much every Apple forum I've been to. There's a 28-page thread about it on the Apple Discussions and not a peep.

Anyone out there in Apple news land?

No one here has the ability to pull some strings and make this story more widespread?!

i'm in this group too, iphone 3g 3.1 and mobile me
it happens about 3 or 4 times a day! this is unacceptable apple needs to fix this now. makes me want to downgrade firmware until their is a fix.

I'm going to give Meadowhell a go on Friday night and see what Genius Bar say.

If i get no luck I might see if the O2 shop have any 3Gs's as i haven't been put off the iPhone as a concept.

Question here...just wondering.

But are all of us experiencing this problem using a hacked carrier file?

I am. 5.0 or 5.1...not sure which or how to find out.

I've already told everyone this is a virus, there is going to be no pattern of settings/features in common that is perceived to cause this issue.

But are all of us experiencing this problem using a hacked carrier file?

Negative. Many of the phones (mine included) are bone-stock -- no hacked carrier files and not jail-broken -- and still experience this particular failure.

It started happening again to me but I know when it happens now when I miss it. I was driving home and testing out Navigon. I wanted to get out so I pushed home. Nothing, Nada, squat. Navigon continued to track me and give directions but without sound. It was like this for 3 miles, repeated home button pushes but no home.

I was going to demonstrate the navigation working and home do nothing but shortly upon video capture it responded. With the all too tell sign that springboard crashed because I got the lock screen. I wish I had remembered I had my camera sooner.

I think it's purely because springboard is crashing. I have a genius bar appointment to complain tomorrow but mostly let them look at the phone in hopes they are look and the logs they collect will find something useful.

every after 3.1 for some reason my iphone takes a while to respon to the home button while its sleeping. it takes like 2-3seconds to wake up.

What i noticed, if i wake it up, then hit the power button to put it to sleep then hit the home button it wakes up instantly. But if i leave it in sleep lets say for like 5minutes or so it has a delay to the wake up when it didnt used to have this before.

My home button responds to quitting apps instantly so i dont think its the button itself.

Has anyone else encountered this problem or found any hints to it on here cause i cant.

Happened to me as well. Took it to apple store and got a new phone. No problems with new one.

It can't possibly be hardware related. How do u explain all our phones having the same issue at the same time. It's obviously software so I have no idea why u guys are bringing the phone into apple and allowing them to replace it. Who knows what other issues the refurbs have.

I'm the IT guy at our office and I've had two iPhones have this issue after upgrading to 3.1. I thought Apple was supposed to be about quality, it seems every release of the iPhone software has a whole set of new problems. Our Verizon rep is scheduled to make his rounds in the building, I'm going to see if they'll give us a deal on some BB Tours as I'm about to ban iPhones from the list of approved devices.

Hi, I'm the IT guy at my office. Don't be that guy. Blackberries have had their issues. For example everyone owning a Blackberry losing push emails for hours because of how they do it.

Count me in as another one with the same problem. My phone would suddenly refuse to wake from sleep about 45% of the time, and only since the 3.1 update last Friday.

iPhone 3G
  • Exchange, Pushed
  • No MobileMe
  • No Notifications
  • Never jail-broken
I called the Apple Expert line and the tech walked me through Resetting all Settings on the phone. That did not solve the problem. He walked me through clearing the phone and restoring from a backup. That did not solve the problem. He told me that at this point it was clear that the phone was definitely having a hardware problem and that I was one of many people who had called him with this exact same issue. He offered me the option of sending in the phone or taking it to a local Apple Store and exchanging it there, if it was more convenient for me.

I took his advice and gave the case number to the local Genius Bar because I have one close to me... but they only agreed to exchange the phone after about 25 minutes of back and forth. The Genius told me that he was unaware of any problems arising from the 3.1 update and that any problems I was having was probably due to what he called a "problem with a corrupted restore file." It was only when I told him that the phone tech had informed me that I was one of many who had called with this exact problem today and "helpfully suggested" that he read the information on the support ticket that he finally agreed to perform the exchange (I don't know if this is everyone's experience or if I'm just some horrible, unreasonable customer, but it seems to me that the Genius Bar guys tend to never agree with the Phone Support techs. It's as if they don't take each other seriously, or something).

At any rate, got a new iPhone without too much trouble. Downgraded to 3.01 until Apple solves whatever the hell is wrong with this update.

Glad i found out about the "holding both buttons for 10 seconds" workaround!

Can you imaging the shouting Jobs is giving someone, on the hour every hour until, "3.1.2" is ready!

yo have to excuse me for laughing right now. not at the fact that everyone's phone is not becoming expensive paperweights, but this is so like a windows mobile issue. every time i had a ppc and updates came out similar issues would happen. hence i refuse to buy a phone the day of release and update the day of release. i sure hope who ever can fix this gets on top of it because of all of you who quickly put the word out (THANK YOU ALL!!) im sure its many more out there with very huge question marks over their heads and everyone trying to get to a local apple store if any to fix this issue.

Just to jump in the ring.

My iPhone 3G and my girlfriends iPhone 3G are both experiencing this.
- Both completely stock.
- Both 3G's
- Both not using MobileME
- Both never experienced this problem until the day we upgraded to 3.1

It's not a virus Eso since it started happening a little after the OFFICIAL UPDATE on both of our iPhones from DIFFERENT MACHINES, and neither of us used Safari before the crashes began.

Basically, 3.1 is bugged and we need 3.1.1 ASAP. Come on Sept 25th! ( Hopefully they put out a fix for this the same day as the carrier file is released ) ... OR BEFORE.

The fact that this issue has been there since 3.1 beta 1 shows no urgency to fix this from apple's part.

You know, using forums like this has the benefit that what might seem like an isolated problem for one consumer actually affects many. If Apple doesn't fix this, then perhaps those who are affected should consider a class action.

It happened to me again last night (after being okay for a day or so). This is about the 8-9th time it's happened. Whenever it happens I notice the back of my case is very warm to the touch and the battery is about dead. I have gone in and made my email and calendar manual update (I had Google calendar set to push and Gmail to fetch). Something is obviously running in the background that is causing the iPhones to lockup (plus battery to run down). I guess if it keeps up I'll do a rebuild from iTunes.

Happened to me again last night.
I was using it, checking mail, etc. nothing major. Set it down and it went to sleep a few minutes later. About 5 minutes after that I picked it up and plugged in my headphones and then pushed home button. Nothing, but when I plugged my headphones in and put them in my ears, I could hear some faint like static when pushing the home button the first time.

Weird.

I think I found a 100% reproducible way of causing this ( At least for my case )

The symptom for me is:
(0) Note: Prior to 3.1 I've never seen this issue
(1) Phone goes to sleep mode
(2) Hitting the home([]) button to wake it up does nothing for 10-20 seconds
(3) after 10-20 seconds the phone wakes up, but the on screen slider is unresponsive for ~5-10 seconds.
(4) After 2&3 the phone is usable again untill it goes to sleep.

I noticed a pattern in my usage that would lead up to the hang.

I have a WiFi access point at home and in the office. It seems that when the phone switches between the 2 the hangs show up. That is:

(1) Check Mail/Browse at home... no lockups.. it will worked through the ENTIRE weekend just fine
(2) Go into office ... no lockups
(3) Check Mail/Browse at work
(4) hanging starts showing up after the phone goes to sleep

At this point if I reboot the phone it stops hanging up... but now if I go home and use the WiFi, the hangs show up again until I reboot again.

Mine has been having very similar issues, though not to the point where the screen goes black and doesn't turn back on. Every 30min to an hour I will just lose internet. It will still show full 3g bars but I cant go to any web pages and my apps wont update. After I reset the network settings everything is fine for another 30 min or so...
