Has anyone who has received a replacement phone experienced the problem again (assuming you updated your replacement to 3.1)?

I'm failing to see how a new phone will fix this issue since it pretty clearly software-based. None of us who have had the problem had any issues with 3.0, 3.01 or any of the 2x versions and several developers also experienced the problem on 3.1 betas. I'm having trouble understanding how a replacement phone will help when this is clearly a software issue.

I dunno how it would either but for me I have yet to run into the issue after getting a replacement iPhone.

While on my original iPhone (which was brand new by a month) regardless of how I restored and updated it continued to have the problem. It very well could be a coincidence.

I've got an iPhone 3GS - 3 months old - and I've updated to 3.1 and have had this issue, but so far it's only happened once. Was listening to the iPod and then everything became unresponsive, the music kept playing but I couldn't access anything, black screen. I tried a hard reset but then the standby screen showed up and all was fine. This never happened with 3.0.
So is it a hardware issue or a software issue?

I put my phone in DFU mode and installed 3.1 from a different computer than I originally installed it from and have yet to have a lockup that I've noticed. I also chalk this up to coincidence and wonder how many times a day it might be locking up without me even noticing when I'm not using the phone. I've only had the problem twice that I've noticed, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened on several other occasions.

No issues for me since I got the replacement phone on Saturday

So I went to the genius bar at an Apple store today at lunch. I told them about my problem, and the guy was useless. He basically told me that my phone is out of warranty (which I already knew), that I am not eligible for an upgrade (which I also knew), and that I should try a full restore to fix my problems (which I already know won't fix anything from reading this thread). It was a total waste of my time. I will just wait for 3.1.1 (or 3.2) and hope that it fixes my issues.

It bugs me that several people in this thread have complained about the exact same issue, bought the phone the same day I did (3G launch day), and were given new phones. I mean I am happy for the people who were helped, but a lot of us have been left out in the cold.

If there was a simple way to revert to 3.0, I would do it in a heartbeat. The one thread I found that told how to do it seemed like a total nightmare.

Are you close to a Apple Store? If so I would recommend setting up an appointment with a Genius and explaining everything you have done to fix the issue. They are always nice to me and try to make me happy.

Still no issues with the new iPhone 3G running OS 3.1

I have a 2 hour drive though some of the busiest roads in northern England to get to my nearest Apple store.

Seems buggy

I've actually noticed that my phone has become quite unstable where it never was before 3.1. I often have the message app crash out to the home screen the first time I try to open it, and I've had the homescreen crash and restart itself on several occasions for no apparent reason at all. It's got me thinking that 3.1 is a rather buggy build. I was watching an episode of Entourage last night, and the phone wouldn't respond to screen touches until the episode was over. I could change the volume, but touches wouldn't register on the screen at all for a half hour.

I've been mobile all day, using and abusing my phone's data services trying to reproduce this problem to no avail. Trying to get a solid clue as to the root cause, but to no avail. Rather frustrating.

That said, there's an old behavior that may be related: sometimes, without obvious rhyme or reason, when waking the phone from sleep the screen will flash on then off very quickly. I'll have to hit the Home button a second time for the screen to come on and stay on so it can then be unlocked.

Again, don't know if this is related. Trying to diagnose the issue is as frustrating as the issue itself.

Please, everyone, if you have not yet filed a bug report with Apple take a moment to do so. :)

Got a replacement 3G on saturday. So far it's been working fine. Did a restore from my backup to 3.1

Why isn't this getting more coverage?!?!?!?!?

I have no idea. I think MacRumors need to blow the whistle on Apple and expose this on their homepage! I don't give a crap about a Microsoft Zune player or HP home server, but people need to know that Apple dropped the ball with this buggy as @#$% firmware! How do we make that happen????????????????

Buggy phone and MMS Carrier Hack

Have about 4 development phones and one personal phone. Notice some interesting behavior with the hack MMS file.

I was getting slower speeds and generally data lags. Did a restore, created a new phone and no issues. Added the MMS carrier 5.0 file and there was some buggyness and slower speeds.

Did a full restore- new phone and updated the carrier file back to the original IPCC hack file, when 3.1 beta first dropped. Have four phones and now not having any issues.

I am in the DC area.

This just happened to me for the first time ever (upgraded to 3.1 on release date). Twice in succession. I wonder if it's related to mobilewatchdog process?

Anyway, I was also near a bookstore, there I blame bookstores. I knew reading would come to no good.

Never jailbroken, officially unlocked iPhone 3G.

I can duplicate reliably

I can duplicate this issue repeatedly. I have a standard 3G, not broken. I was playing a multiplayer game (galcon) over wifi, and in the middle of the game I hit the power button to shut off my screen. This caused the phone to become unresponsive and I had to reset it like mentioned. This happens every time, so it seems like it has something to do with shutting off the system while in the middle of wifi communication. I don't know, I am not that technical, so perhaps someone else can read more then this into how I repeat it.

When it happened to me, I was no where near wifi. And I can't get data. I was listening to a podcast, and I paused it.

Definitely interesting an worth looking into further. In two out of three of my lockups the phone was on Wifi but not necessarily running any particular app. When the third lockup happened it was no where near a Wifi access point, though I don't recall if I had Wifi turned on or not.

Maybe the issue is when the Wifi is turned on, but not necessarily connected to an access point, combined with sleeping the phone? I've had Wifi off all day since I am no where near a WAP, and haven't been able to lockup the phone. Maybe just coincidence but truthfully I hope it isn't.

^

I hardly ever turn Wifi on and it definitely wasn't turned on either of the times mine locked up.

I also keep my Wifi turned off - so my issue was unrelated to Wifi. But I do know that I was in an area with intermittent connectivity to 3G.

Maybe the phone is trying to access something critical on the network, and if/when it loses connectivity, the phone gets put into a nasty state? Network connectivity can be lost in any mode (other than Airplane mode).

I can't test right now because I get no 3G, but I think this also happened to me when i was playing the game over 3g instead of wifi. So i don't know that my instance is directly related to wifi, more likely just network communication of some kind while being put to sleep.

Count me in

Yup, mine locks up about every two hours-- in fact, it locked up while I was sleeping and my alarm didn't go off so I was very late to work (Wah, I know). There doesn't seem to be a specific time or thing I am doing to cause it and when it isn't locked, the battery dies quickly anyway.

My appointment at the Apple Store is Thursday, but I doubt they will do anything since I am past warranty. I hate this iPhone so much at this point-- between crappy phone reception, voice mail not working, work Wi-fi not working, and then this. Hope Apple does something, because this customer is close to walking. At least until the shiny Tablet comes out.

Same issue here. No mobile me either and only have three apps. Black screen, unresponsive, have to hold both buttons down for minutes sometimes. Never had a problem with OS 3.0 this is damn frustrating.

APPLE HELLO???? FIX This nonsense

For the past 2 days:

In AM after overnight charge, phone off in pocket sucks down battery quickly.
Then NO voice/data connection to AT&T.
Reboot fixes.

Yes I connect to wifi at home and work automatically (quicker than 3G), but this behavior new since 3.1.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. You seem to get news stories for every little perceived issue, whether widespread and/or genuine or not, but I haven't seen a thing about this - nor the broken playlists and podcast support, for that matter - despite big threads about it on here and pretty much every Apple forum I've been to. There's a 28-page thread about it on the Apple Discussions and not a peep.

Anyone out there in Apple news land?
