same problem

same problem - 3G 16GB, i'm also a mobilme user ... (connect with Exchange, 2 IMAP and 1 POP Account)

Just spoke to someone at the Apple store who said that fix for this 95% of the time is a factory restore. Sounded like a few of the store employees had gone through the same thing.

By Factory Restore, do you mean using the Restore function in iTunes or simply going into the System Settings panel and doing a Factory Reset?

Although my issues are not as extreme as those some of you are experiencing, i did have an issue with the device freezing when i flicked between Safari and a txt i had received.

The deivce stalled kinda like how a 3G normally does, but i am running a 3GS....

and it had never done this prior to 3.1

Just wanted to throw my experience onto the pile . . .

3G 16GB White
No Jailbreak
No MobileMe
Google Exchange Sync
Yahoo
Prowl
GPush
No Applecare

Mine does the same thing, here's what I've done:

Restore
Reset All Settings
Restore
Restore as New Phone

I'm using it today to see if that fixed it. Restoring, and Resetting All Settings did nothing.

A friend of mine is having this issue too; he's done all of the above; none of it works.

Both of us contacted Apple directly (800-My-iPhone) and spoke with a product specialist (be honest about being out of warranty and insist this is a problem with 3.1). We told them everything we tried (including downgrading to 3.0.1 with Alt+Restore), and they've set us both up with warranty extensions and Genius Appointments. They basically told my friend they would swap his phone. He has an 8 Gig. I have a 16Gig, and they said they might repair it ( ). I think they are more reticent to replace it if they're going to have to replace it with a 3GS. We'll see what happens. My appointment is tomorrow at 4:30.

Since I got my replacement iPhone 3G 8GB last Thursday at the Apple Store I have had absolutely no issues whatsoever with it locking up again.

So the update must have been bad but I think as well it's gotta be hardware based as well something in each of these iphones (as it's not effecting everyone) is the catalyst to this issue.

I'm wondering what's causing some to do it and others to be fine . . . . could be something to do with how many push notifications your phone is listening for. I have Fring, Prowl, GPush, Yahoo Mail, and Google Sync . . . that's quite a few.

I guess there could be a slightly different model chip somewhere in some of the early 3G's . . . or they could just have some kind of manufacturing fault that was corrected later.

Mine went dead yesterday... Had to hold the home and lock buttons down for an eternity to get it to reboot, and the reboot took a long time. I thought the thing was dead. Mine is a 16GB 3G. I use Google Sync for contacts and calendar. (No MobileMe) I don't use push for anything, and I don't use text messaging.

Im starting to wonder if Google Sync is part of it. As Google sync uses Exchange im wondering if it's a problem of sorts (or related) to the new exchange rules forced into 3.1 We know that only 3gs users can use exchange properly now. While Google sync works I am really starting to think it's related. I had to manually set up Google Sync on my iPhone before and did so after the 3.1 update Wed (as I had set it up as a new iPhone) and still had the issues.

After a replacement from Apple I realized and saw in the info tab in iTunes that in the contacts area "google contacts" is an option when chosen asks for your Google accounts login. I entered that and BOOM all my contacts are moved over. This is the ONLY thing I have changed in my set up of my iphone with no issues (mind you and not counting the replacement iPhone I received from the Genius Bar Thursday night).

Several of us that are having the problem are not using Google Sync however.

Just thought I'd stick my name to the list, never had a problem with any updates since launch day on my 16GB 3G until I installed the 3.1 update on Wednesday, now my phone has frozen on a black screen about 5 times and the battery life sucks as well, I've done a restore and it's made no difference.

No Mobileme
Not using Google Sync
Turned off Push notifications after the first freeze

This must be because of 3.1 and Apple will hopefully recognise the problem and release another update.

Thanks for the link, I sent some feedback.

iPhone 8GB 3G has been slow and unresponsive a few times. Seems to have gotten a bit better but overall still laggy - screens are very choppy. Pinching/scrolling is slow. Even the slider to wake up just goes from the left to the right with no slide animation. Very strange.

I definitely noticed an improvement when I turned off my Google Sync via Exchange. I'm convinced this is the issue.

I had this issue on Saturday as did my GF. When the phone finally came back on, we have not had any issues since this happen.

I'm not using Google sync and I'm having the same issues as other people in this thread, so I'm convinced it has nothing to do with the problem.

It could be a contributing factor.

It seemed to work for me, its the only thing different on my iPhone thats different (other than having a new iphone thanks to the Genius Bar).

Like I said it might be a contributing factor. Lets look at how exchange issues crept up for all the iPhones (unless your work uses 6 digits and and you have a 3gs) Google Sync originally used exchange set up within the iPhone itself. Now iTunes you just log in and it pulls that data in without need for exchange.

While it's not the main reason and I am sure there are other things contributing to it, it could be FOR SOME what causes it, while other people depending on set ups etc it could be something different.

EVERYONE has a completely (if not slightly) different set up on their iPhones which means there could be a myriad of things that could be causing the issue. As for SOME of us turning off exchange services seemed to resolve the issue (like I said for SOME people)

This lockup just happened again this morning, after being fine all weekend. I don't see any correlation between the two lockups my phone has experienced this far.

When the first lockup occurred I was impatient and did the Home+Sleep reset. When today's lockup happened, I just left the phone alone and it came back on its own. I wonder if there's just some serious issue w/ the phone waking from sleep?

Anyway I posed some feedback to Apple. I hope it's OK that I referenced this thread. :)

Hello Apple. For a more complete synopsis of this problem please see this thread at Macrumors:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/783122/

I have the 16GB 3G iPhone. Since updating the iPhone OS to 3.1 (via a MacBook Pro w/ OS X 10.5.8 and iTunes 9) the phone has become unresponsive on two occasions. By unresponsive I mean:
* The screen is black (not lit up)
* does not respond to presses of the Home button
* does not respond to presses of the Sleep button
* does not respond at all when plugged into the computer USB cable
* essentially, the phone looks like it's dead

On the first occasion when this happened (last Friday), no particular application was running. An alarm had just chimed and I snoozed it & hit the Sleep button to turn off the screen. A few minutes after that the phone was unresponsive. Although it did not respond to Home or Sleep button presses by themselves, it did respond to the Home+Sleep reset sequence. After that it seemed fine... or at least was fine for the next two days.

This morning (Monday) it happened again. This time I had an app running, BeejiveIM. The phone was sleeping (screen off), and any attempt to wake it failed; it was once again unresponsive. This time I did not issue the Home+Sleep reset sequence, and a few minutes later it came back to life by itself. Very weird.

Please note the following about my phone's configuration:
1) I have one Push-enabled app -- BeejiveIM
2) 3.1 was installed via the update method; it was not a "new phone" installation, though I know others have tried this and still experience this problem
3) I have one Exchange account set up, with Push enabled, syncing Calendars and Mail.
4) I am a MobileMe subscriber, syncing Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Dock items, and Bookmarks

If you have any questions please ask. We, your valuable users, are hoping you guys fix this soon. :)

Seriously, WTF is going on with my phone??? I want to downgrade back to 3.0 on my 3GS but we can't! APPLE, give me an update NOW!!!!!!!!

Same thing is happening to me. The first time it did it, I thought it was just because I had just dropped it. I figured it probably due to the drop the next 2 times that it happened, however.

Not jailbroken.

Edit: As I was typing up this reply, the issue happened again. I felt it vibrate like I got a text message, but when I tried to wake it up it was unresponsive.

Thats because Apple is now making the iPhone 3gs enforce the signing code measures with the baseband update unsigned code can't be put back. With each update you apply it will only allow you to go back to that same version you updated with when you restore.

I just returned from the Apple Store appointment today and they took my phone apart and told me it had a loose wire. They gave me a "new" iPhone and I was out of there in 20 minutes. New phone has been updated to 3.1 and i'm on the 6th hour of no lockups or problems.

2 days with the "new" iPhone running OS 3.1 with all my original settings and its running great. Phone seems quicker and more responsive with no freezes/lock ups in sight.

If you can goto the Apple Store and have them look at it. It helped me and now I'm 100% satisfied with my phone!

Thats good to hear makes me wonder if not only is there a software issue but if another factor is hardware. I have not had any issues after the swap out at the Apple Store. I wonder if there is any slight hardware differences between a refurb iPhone and a "retail" iphone.

But seriously, they cant swap all devices that show this issue. If it's just like 10% of all yet sold iPhones...

And who is going to believe that the "loose wire" vs OS 3.1 update really is a concurrence?

But of course, if there is no statement referring to this published by Apple by Wendesday I will go there
