Same here.

GF is using the old 3G with a fresh clean restore of 3.1 (not from backup). Phone goes blank for no reason. Happened twice today, once while she was taking a photo and another during contact editing.

No issues on my 3GS as well.

While I don't think its related, we're both on mobileme.

I was having the non responsive issue a LOT until just recently with my 3G, was happening on the 3.1 betas and also the 3.1 release however it hasn't happened for a few days now. What changed in that timeframe? I deleted a large (~20 pages) text message thread, so my theory is that spotlight was choking on indexing it and if you happened to try to unlock it at that time it would fail.

I got a brand new replacement phone from Apple less then a year ago because i was having issues with my first iPhone 3G purchase. Are replacement phones warrantied for a year as well? Or do they go with the first phones warranty??

They move the original warrenty over to the new phone you are given.

I guess if it is exactly a brand new phone (Apple doesn't do this but I guess it's not completly impossible.) I think maybe they might start the year over....... Maybe.

Yeah surprisingly it was a brand new phone instead of a white box refurb. That's why I'm thinking perhaps they should restart the warranty being that it was new.

Same here 3gs 32gb no mobile me but Echange

I am using exchange. I was at a house party had 90 percent battery left. Wen t a bar pulled out the phone and nothing. I could not get any of the buttons to work not even a hard reset. About an hour later i hit the power button and the Apple logo came on and booted up. I still had an almost full battery. This is very bad because we will not know when it is off and will miss calls etc. Im switching back to my Blackberry Bold until Apple fixes this.

I hope everyone is filling out bug reports for this problem on Apple's site here:

The more visibility for this MAJOR oversight by Apple the better. It would even be cool if a story was featured on the MacRumors homepage as this seems to be a fairly widespread issue both here and on Apple's forums. No idea how to make that happen though. Does anyone know how to suggest a story for the homepage to raise visibility?

Do you think if we left enough feedback that anyone that has a failed update should get a free doughnut their next apple store trip they will do it?

One more thing, it may just be me never noticing before, but does your phone appear to stay in a "Searching" state much longer than normal upon reset?

I hope Apple addresses this quickly.

Yes, longer searching. On dialing out just said dialing ... Had to reset. Facebook app had to be removed and added back, it would black screen.

Kinda crazy, very NON Apple for this to be widespread, all of my iPhone friends in same boat. It was like the wrong version was put up.

There could be some truth to this. It seems to lock up when I get a text from my GF (a conversation which goes all the way back to when I last did a restore in May). I can't tell if I'm not receiving the messages or not, because it does happen on occasion when I send them and just when seemingly nothing happens.

I really hope 3.1 isn't preinstalled on new iPhones by default ... there's going to be a LOT of unhappy first time iPhone owners out there judging by the amount of problems 3.1 is causing both here and on Apple's own discussion boards.

Theory?? (one of many I suppose)

The strange thing I am seeing is this. I do not leave 3G enabled, I only use the EDGE network until I need 3G speeds for browsing. I do keep Wi-Fi enabled and use wireless in the home. No security other than hidden SSID. Now, I never realized the issue until I took my phone to work. In other words, when I am at home my phone never locked up (once tonight...will get to that).

At work we have 300+ access points running secure wireless on B/G radios with hidden SSIDs. I have one of those SSIDs configured in my phone. At work. my phone locked up all day long several times. On my drive home, and my entire night and into the next day my phone never once locked up.

I went to a Target store with my wife (where I assume they are running wireless in their store) my phone locked up twice while there. I turned off Wi-Fi while in Target and did not have a problem again until I got home. Once home the phone did lock up for the first time ever here. I turned Wi-Fi back on to see if it happens again. So.........here is any other theory. Is this an issue with the Wi-Fi portion of the iPhone in some bizarre way? In other words, when it sees SSIDs broadcast it is not aware of it freezes up? Or if the SSID is hidden, the phone is still receiving the wireless signal. Is it causing the phone to lock? I am grasping here, but it does seem possible at least in my case. Two nights in my home and my phone works fine. Go out to work or any other place broadcasting wireless and I get lock-ups/shutdowns (or whatever this is).

Anyone from Apple out there????

Hello?? :confused::mad:

is it this you're looking for?

I had this issue last night with my phone. I went to use the phone and it was off. I tried and tried to get it to turn back on, but nothing. I knew the battery wasn't dead, it was around 50% before it shut itself off. I plugged the phone in for a few minutes thinking a charge would help and after about 10 minutes I tried to turn it on but still nothing. (Also, the phone was now very hot!) I started hitting the power button repeatedly and finally the phone turned on. It started the bootup process but then got stuck on the screen with the apple. After a few minutes I plugged it back in and then it finished loading. It's been running fine since but now I feel like I can't trust it!

I'm running 3.1 and am not a MobileMe subscriber. I've had zero issues with this phone aside from the occasional lockup. This particular issue is definitely a first for me and this phone.

This has happened repeatedly to me since updating to 3.1. Not only that, but my normally tolerable battery life was unbearable.
So, I tried a restore to as a new phone (no back up) and it still did it.

Now, what I did was DELETE THE ORIGINAL 3.1 FILE THE UPDATER DOWNLOADED (~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates) and put my phone in DFU mode, which forced me to redownload the update, and did a complete restore.
I didn't add back any apps, turned off the fraudulent websites setting, Find My iPhone, turned push mail off, just to see if I can find out where the problem my lie.
But for now, I am inclined to think the orginal download may have been corrupted.

The one immediate thing I have noticed is that the phone no longer runs warm as it did over the last three days, which leads me to believe there was some background process running that isn't now.

So far, so good. But again, with the way things have been going lately, you never know.

Same problem has happened to me four times. I am not a Mobile Me or Exchange user. Just Gmail. It just locks up and I have to do a hard reset to get it to recover. This happened after the latest upgrade. Before that everything was fine.

Thanks. Trying that now.

I reported this early on. It happened to me right off the bat with the update.

I have a 3G 16GB, no push app's on it. I have mobile me, but it's not set up in the phone.

What's even crazier, is it hasn't happened all day today. Last night, I couldn't get it to reset even with power+home button. I put it back in my pocket and figured I'd plug it in later. About an hour later, I go to plug it in, and it went back to normal.

Alright, scratch everything I said above.
It's happened again.

Seriously, I have been contemplating downgrading to my 1st Gen iPhone until the battery life of the 3G gets better, but this is getting ridiculous when you add that and the freezing.

crap !

My 8gig 3g was doing this too.
I should have looked here first, but I went to the apple store and they just replaced it instead.
So I guess that's good, but I am anticipating the same problems. So that is bad...

I'm pretty sure the one thing most can agree on is that it's definitely the update.
This issue didn't come up until 3.1, and it's affected 2G, 3G, and 3GS users.

I hope Apple addresses this quickly.

well at least I got a new phone out of the deal, re-syncing everything is a freakin' pain though ;)

Iphone 3G 8 GB
push notifications turned off awhile back (before the 3.0.1 update)
never been jailbroken
not an exchange or mobileme user

everything was perfectly fine until the 3.1 update.
since the update:
battery life nowhere near as good
phone goes to sleep
phone does not wake up
takes force reboot to do anything. this is a very regular thing since i did the update over the weekend.
i have not had to do a full hard reset except 2 times.
haven't submitted a ticket but about to do so.
apple better get on the ball and do something. if there should have been two different releases (one for the gs and one for the g) apple should have done so.

Another with the same problem here. Made me late for work last week too.

My 3G had this problem after charging overnight on Saturday and after a while came back to life (buzzing / screen flashing on and off etc), interestingly it flashed up the battery on the screen as it was plugged in at the time, and for a second it showed it as nearly empty before catching up with itself.

Mine has been fine since then (the alarm even went off this morning!), but a couple of minutes after plugging it in at work I'm staring at a blank screen again. I'm going to leave it in this state and go down to the apple store at lunch time. I'm pretty sure I've only ever had it lock up fully after it's been plugged in, but I've noticed sluggishness when unlocking. The slider gets all the way across and stays there, and it's almost like you have to remind it with another tap.
