Downloaders of the iPhone 3.1 firmware are experiencing a variety of problems, according to talk on Apple's support forums. Perhaps the most serious involves occasional total shutdowns, which occur without warning. Affected iPhones can be revived, but only after a manual reboot.

This was from another forum, but I have to ask. Is the phone actually powering off? It appears to be "off", but when I call the iPhone from another phone I hear it ringing several times before going to voicemail. If it were "off" it should go straight to voicemail correct?

Just asking.....

It might as well be off. None of the buttons work. If you hold down the sleep/wake button the "slide to power off" message doesn't appear. It's bascially a freeze up. ONly way to get it out is to do a hard reset (sleep & home for 10 secs.)

And if someone calls you while it is like this, the caller will hear ringing down the phone, but the iPhone remains black and silent. Really frustrating. Seems to only be an issue with 3G's tho..

It is not off. The screen is just unresponsive. If it was off, holding down Power would immediately turn it on. Instead, holding down power + home for 5 seconds does a hard reset, which indicates it's still on.

same thing happened with my 3GS... mine seemed to be off so I just pushed power button, apple logo came and it was working.

eBay notifications???

Don't know if this is everyone's problem.

I run a pretty lightly loaded (by this forum's standards, certainly) 16 GB 3G (white with no cracks...). Upgraded to 3.1 Wednesday night. Almost immediately started getting the lockups.

Yesterday, it happened twice, seemingly right around the time a notification came through. I've got the phone on silent, so there's no distinguishing what came through (e-mail, voice mail, eBay notification, etc.), it just buzzes.

Anyway, after the third lockup, I went in to settings and shut off Notifications. I haven't had to reboot the phone for the past 24+ hours...

I just turned it on again, and set eBay to just alerts. No badges, no sounds. It had been set for badges and alerts.

Will see what happens.

Mine just had this problem. I used it 10 minutes before it happend. Came back to use the phone and nothing. Tried powering it up and doing the hard reboot several times. Only after the 4th hard reboot try it finally powered up. Hope apple fixes this problem soon.

I had eBay installed with push on, did a new phone restore last night. By chance didn't install eBay on it, only app I have with push notifications on. Been ok for about 18 hrs???

Ya I got curious re-downloaded 3.1 and installed it on the replacement iPhone the Apple store gave me. I have had no issues so far. BUT before I used to use exchange for google contacts. This time I did not do that (actually syncing your google contacts is built into iTunes 9 I had no idea on iTunes 8 you couldn't do it within iTunes)

So of course thats not set up.

Im wondering anyone else with the lockups have exchange of any kind set up?

I saw a few and that might be one of the culprits.

No Exchange here, but I do have Mobile Me with push on synching calendar, mail, bookmarks & contacts.

WiFi is on (but inactive), G3 is on, BT is on.

I'll see how it does over the next 24 hours with Notifications for eBay back on...

The only notification app I had was MLB At Bat. I had turned on notifications (not that I ever got any) and had my phone lock up twice yesterday.

Yesterday afternoon I also tried turning off Notifications, and I haven't had a lockup in about 20+ hours now.

I upgraded my wife's phone to 3.1 at the same time as mine, and she hasn't had any lockups. She also doesn't have Notifications turned on.

I'm curious if other affected people have Notifs on?

Turned push notifications off and been using for about 20 hours now without a lockup.

Posted here too. Trying to get as many people on this as possible! http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2151766&tstart=0

Well it kept crashing on me after I thought I had it under control. I don't really see the point in restoring "as new" since many people are still experiencing problems.

Has anyone read of any ipod touch users experiencing these problems? Do they have any pets?

In any case, from now on since this seems to be quite an issue I want to give it a name. I am hereby dubbing the iPhone to be "Blacking Out." (C'mon, it works on so many levels...well, two levels) And this ordeal shall henceforth be named "The Great Blackout of 09-09-09."

As the only sufferers all have pets I go with the "Great Domesticated Animal Blackout Issue of 09/09/09"

Lulz

In all fairness I think it has to be push notifications. This very thread right here is why forums are invaulable and there is no way I would have figured this out on my own. A big thank you to all here at MR :)

3G
OS 3.1
Carrier 5.1

Happened to me once on Wednesday and once today (Friday).

No mobile me, push email from yahoo, no other apps pushing.

Its obviously part of 3.1 update, but is it limited to just the 3G?
So far, it seems that way.

Just finished a phone call with my sister. Put the phone down. Went to plug it in to charge. Black screen. URGH! 21 hours without a lockup - my best yet!!!

I have had extreme sluggishness. 3.1, 3G, MobileMe, but I also use Google Apps calendar and contacts sync for work (which is added as an exchange account).

i just turned off notifications, i hope it helps.

Including myself, I know 4 people who've upgraded our 3G models to 3.1 and none of us have had lockups. None use Exchange, however I do use MobileMe & Push notifications for apps (though not often). 1 of the 4 routinely uses WiFi.

The one thing we all have in common is that ALL of us did a Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings (NOT ALL CONTENT & SETTINGS) after the upgrade. I did this after 3.0 based on another forum member's tip and the phone was much less laggy & more responsive afterward. As a result, I did the same thing after 3.1 and also advised both of my parents and a coworker to do the same. None of the 4 of us have had any issues since 3.1.

This might be totally unrelated, but I thought it might be worth mentioning in case it helps.

Same thing is happening to me. I whip out my phone and press the home button and nothing, phone is completely black. Have to reset in order to get it back on. I am also a Mobile me subscriber. My friend is to and has not had this experience to my knowledge.

Mine did the same thing last night around 11:30est, and I didn't have wifi nor notifications on. I did not do a full restore. When it did blackout, I tried pressing all the buttons and tried holding down start and the home button until the apple logo came up. and still nothing happened. i continued to try different buttons every few seconds, and it eventually came back to life as I was trying pressing holding down the start and home buttons. I haven't used my phone for too long today, but about 15 minutes, and it has yet to do it again, but the lack of usage may be why.

While I haven't had the issue again since I have swapped out my iPhone at the Apple Store. I don't think that's it between the time I upgraded and yesterday morning when it happend twice. the amount of time I had used it total was probably 30 minutes.
