Just tried to open a support ticket. Warranty has expired, so I am not entitled to help because of their sh**ty software. What a jip. Say what you like about Microsoft but when they knew one their products was crap (xbox 360) they replaced mine after warranty.

F**k you apple. I'll keep paying for this expensive contract for a phone that isn't designed to last the length of the contract.

Well mine was non responsive this afternoon, I had to restart it. I guess it kinda figures as the update failed to install, had to restore, phones refusing to sync even after 9 hours of trying... Soon as I get home from work I will try again. My iPhone is a 3g non jb.

Not very happy!!!

I'm not a MobileMe subscriber and this has happened twice today. Never any issues like this before 3.1 and I've had my 3G since it came out.

It's pretty clear that there's a serious issue with this firmware. No way are this many people getting exactly the same problem the day after a new update by chance.

Would it be safe for me to restore my phone using 3.0.1?

I'm gonna have a crack at it in the morning. I'll let you know how I get on. IF anyone else pulls it off, please post here!!!

This has happened to me 3 times since yesterday. I find that even pressing the home button has a delay of turning on the screen.

If it matters, I'm a MobileMe subscriber. I also have a 3G.

Thought I'd also mention that this has only happened to me while I was at home on a wireless network. I was using my phone all day at work (with no wireless) and had zero problems. Brought it home and after about 15 minutes it happened. I'm going to stay off my wireless network and see if that helps.

It happened once to me at work where there's no wi-fi and once at home where there is. I don't think that has anything to do with it.

Just happend on my girlfriend's 3G, hasnt happend on my 3GS yet though..

I wonder if Apple temporarily pulled the 3.1 update? I just installed 10.6.1 and iTunes 9, plugged in my iPhone to sync, and it said "Your iPhone software is up to date". I'm running 3.0.1.

Ditto I have NO wifi at work and keep it off to save battery life.

Im now leaving for my appointment with the Genius bar. I will post when I get back and let you all know what they say about it all.

Same issue for me. 2 hard resets yesterday and 2 today. Phone us rnning hot and sucking battery juice. Couldn't make it through the night and it was a full charge starting at 8 pm.

3g. No mobile me. Never jail broken.

Back from the Genius bar was in and out in 15 minutes

They have had one other case of this. Nothing in their systems about it (yet)

They gave me a refurb (reserialized one starting with the #5) It has 3.0.1 Im about to see if I can update it to 3.1 she said if it happens again to call customer support.

If it says it's up to date I assume Apple is aware of what's happened and it's been taken down.

UPDATE

It shows 3.1 is available Im tempted to do it but kinda afraid again.........

Someone was saying it was saying it was saying that their was up to date when attempting to upgrade? You think Apple could take it down fix it and get it back up again within hours?

Wow....that's cold. That's like calling up a tow truck company when your car ***** the bed in the desert and having them say "Ew...sorry your contract ran out". Yeah I went through 2 360's....first one was out of warranty but the guy let me get a new one anyway same deal with the second. See if you can get past that though, I find if you say the right things it can be a success.

I have a 3G, no MobileMe, exchange email setup.

I upgraded to 3.1 last night, and the phone instantly locked, with a hard reset necessary.

Charged it fully, and went to bed at 1am, removing it from the charger. It was dead in the morning.

It froze up on me 7 times today, twice this morning, twice after a restore to backup, and three times after a full restore to factory settings. I have disabled 3G, Wi-Fi, notifications, bluetooth, and location services but it is still freezing up.

Called tech support and was told to take it to the Apple store and 'if they think it's a problem they'll probably just replace it.' Unfortunately it has water damage from who knows what, so most likely they'll say it's damaged and can't do a thing about it.

It worked fine with 3.0, unfortunately it seems the 3.1 isn't really cooperative with my phone.

I already have done. Sent them an email but I can't see it holding much water. I'd go down to my apple store but (I'm not meaning to sound racist) but the staff are pretty much made up of cocky Indian lads. They are really unhelpful and have zero customer service skills.

It just makes me mad that I'm paying £50 a month for a phone that is playing up. I wouldn't mind if it was a Sony Ericsson. Or a Nokia. I would have taken out insurance as I would have expected it over 18 months.

Begs the question to why they push apple care all the time.

And my car came with 3 years warranty. And 3 years breakdown cover. Which is what apple should be along the same lines as. You pay through the nose for a product at least they can do is make sure it lasts.

Add me to the list. I updated to 3.1 and a couple hours later the phone locked up, requiring me to reset it.

I also had a problem with a couple apps quitting immediately upon opening. That went away after the reset.

FWIW, I use MobileMe as well.

Add me to the list. My phone seems to intermittently hang after I lock it and put it in my pocket.

iPhone 3G 16gb.
  • No MobileMe
  • Exchange contacts, cals & mail (via Kerio mail server, so not real exchange)

I restored once earlier today and that didn't fix it. Right now, I'm trying a restore from DFU mode - which I doubt will work.

This has happened to mine 3-4 times as well. iPhone 3G, no MobileMe.

If I have the patience and just ignore it, sometimes it seems to come back. More often, I get impatient and do a reset.

I have had a few (4-5) black screen freezes since upgrading to 3.1 on wednesday night.

I have:

a 3G

mobile me

turned off push etc

no dogs

4 cats.

any news on a ticket yet?

Happened to me a few times yesterday. I'm experimenting with leaving WIFI turned off today. Hasn't locked up as of 7am this morning (knock on wood). I use MobileMe with push calendars. Nothing not "Apple supported". Turned on Genius for Apps too.

Can't open a ticket as I am out of warranty. Hence all the Apple bashing.

Goodeye - I'd leave it on 3.0

If Apple did change it in any way people would know and they would have changed the build. Like the did for the sms problem (3.0.1)

First time for me....

I am an 8Gb 3G user and after the upgrade to iTunes 9 and 3.1 my phone has displayed these same symptoms. I have reset it three times today by holding down the 'Home' and 'Power' buttons much like most of you. This is the first time I have experienced an issue with an upgrade.

The upgrade took close to an hour initially, and upon completion I could not open the iPod app. It would start to open with a white screen then crash back to the home screen in a few seconds. I power reset two times, but that did nothing to correct it. I reconnected the phone to 'SYNC' it. It went through the entire backup again (40 - 45 minutes!), but after that all appeared normal (iPod app worked). Today at work I soon discovered THIS nasty issue when attempting to look at my phone it would not respond. It does not respond when you connect it to a pc via the USB cable either. I called my iPhone from my desk phone and I can hear the ring in my receiver , but the iPhone never rings or lights up. RESET .....again......and again.

One more thing, it may just be me never noticing before, but does your phone appear to stay in a "Searching" state much longer than normal upon reset?

I hope Apple addresses this quickly.

There are huge threads about this on the Apple support forums as well.

People have suggested everything from turning off WiFi, to disabling Mobile Me calendar push.

Apple should stop being so secretive, and instead use LOTS of beta testers like other companies do. At the least, make all their headquarters employees upgrade first.

Funny you should mention that. In my house I have a really weak 3G signal. Before the upgrade it was on EDGE most of the time. No bother, I have wi-fi. But when I didn't have wifi on there was no GSM, EGDE or 3G. Waited a while and it came back. Then went. Then came back again. It seems that 3.1 doesn't like weak 3G singals on my 3G.

Grrr Apple! I mentioned this on the second beta of 3.1. Told Apple too!!

From another forum..

Downloaders of the iPhone 3.1 firmware are experiencing a variety of problems, according to talk on Apple's support forums. Perhaps the most serious involves occasional total shutdowns, which occur without warning. Affected iPhones can be revived, but only after a manual reboot.

This was from another forum, but I have to ask. Is the phone actually powering off? It appears to be "off", but when I call the iPhone from another phone I hear it ringing several times before going to voicemail. If it were "off" it should go straight to voicemail correct?

Just asking.....
