Voicemail issues too?

Not only do I have the "coma" issues, but I have discovered another (possibly related) issue on a friend's 3GS. He was getting a good laugh out of my troubles and stating that he upgraded his 3GS to 3.1 without issue. Well, that was until someone (including me) left him several voicemails. We tested again today, but he never recieves them. Dozens of voicemails from the last few days never show up on his phone even after several reboots. Is this related to the 3.1 upgrade? Anyone else seeing this?

3.1.1 anyone????

Unresponsive to 3.1

I had the same problems. I wasn't getting voicemails, my phone was unresponsive and it kept crashing. I went to mac store and they said it might have been a software issue. They plugged the phone in and saw the apps that kept crashing. They game me a brand new phone. I went home and restored from back up and then it was good for a couple days and then it started again. So I restored my phone again. This time I set it up like a new phone. I stinks because I had to start from scratch, but I haven't had any problems since.

Hope this might help.

No jailbroken
still no mms

Has anybody checked the console logs? I haven't yet upgraded, but I am curious about what may be causing this. I was looking at the lockdownd.log in /private/var/logs and there are a ton of errors in this file related to activation. The important section looks like:

With all of the discussion about account activation being the reason for all of the troubles, I'm curious what the console logs look like for people that are having problems. I've done some research on lockdownd, but can't find any mention of the state "WildcardActivated." My phone is, obviously, jailbroken but has never been unlocked. I did swap sims the day that I bought the phone though, so I don't know if that has an impact?

For those of you that aren't jailbroken, you can download the iPhone Configuration Utility from apple to view console logs:

Just another data point: iPhone 3G with the exact same problem after "upgrading" to 3.1. Never hacked, never jailbroken. No Mobile Me. Did have Notifications on (for the eBay app), but turned it off and that hasn't helped. I can't believe Apple would release this without better testing. Obviously a large percentage of 3G users are seeing this issue. I hope Apple issues a fix soon!

From the Apple discussion forums regarding this topic (which is now 33 pages and counting) -- take a at the first post here if you're on a Mac (don't know where crash reports are kept on windows, sorry). Curious to see what kind of crash data people who are experiencing a lot of crashes are getting.

Those "aggregated" ones certainly look suspicious; don't see any of 'em prior to Sept. 10th.
I checked mine and, excluding app crashes, I have ten since 9/9 when I installed 3.1. That's not far short of what I had for the whole rest of the year combined.

Anyone else having this issue?

After updating my iphone 3g to 3.1 (and waiting for-freaking-ever for it to backup) and seeing everything was working fine (Safari seemed snappier ;-) )I went about my day. Made a stop at the bookstore and was going to whip out my phone to check amazon prices when lo and behold my phone would not do anything. Wouldn't respond to me holding down the home key or the power key. It did reset after doing a reboot (holding both the home and power button for 10 seconds).

It happened again on the way home so I decided to plug it into my macbook to "wake" it up but absolutely nothing happened. I have hardware growler installed to see what gets plugged into my macbook and nothing popped up. I unplugged it, pushed some buttons again, messed with the silence switch a few times and nothing.

The weirdest thing happened a few minutes later. The phone started vibrating and the screen kept turning on and off. It was like it was finally responding to all of the input I had given it a few minutes minutes earlier.

So anyone have this happen to them?

I'm going to restore it to see if that fixes it.

Also another wonky thing I had happen was the auto-dimmer never undimmed until I locked the screen and unlocked it.

Oh and btw, the battery is fully charged.

It has been like this since the BETA, it is very annoying trust me! it is a little better than the beta but it is still a serious problem

Grabbed this for my Mac. Hopefully (!!!) the phone will crash while it's talking to the app...

I can post them all if you like. :)

Here's aggregated-2009-09-16.crash as a zip.

Well that wasn't particularly valuable. Each of the individual crash logs should show what was running and give more information. I don't have any springboard logs in my phone to see what kind of information is in there.

I'm just curious if there are any similarities for all the folks who are running into this that might help narrow down the cause.

Just another friendly reminder to PLEASE fill out a bug report at the link below if you are experiencing this problem. Apple needs to be flooded with bug reports so that this is a top priority issue, as they've yet to even publicly acknowledge the problem!

3G with 3.1, I am having to reboot my phone about every 5-10 minutes because it simply will NOT turn on.

I set up an appt for an Apple Expert to call me. Just got off the phone with them.
When the Expert read my problem, she immediately put me on with a supervisor. They are going to replace my phone tomorrow so they can "use it for inspection and diagnosis of the known problem with 3.1."

I didn't read all 8 pages, has anyone else had them do this for them also?

Edit: 3G, 8GB, it is a replacement phone received July 18th, 2009.

After the spate of new posts/threads today reporting more 3.1 problems, I am now genuinely dreading getting 3.1 pre-installed on the 8GB 3G I'm picking up on Wednesday from the Apple Store.

So I got a replacement phone today at the Apple Store in Sherman Oaks, CA.
Serial number indicates it was made sometime this month, so it's not a replacement. Unless, of course, they jack the serial.

I hooked it up to iTunes, restored as a new phone, and updated to 3.1, just to see if his one has any problems.

So far, so good. But I'm not holding my breath.

Also, it happens to me mostly at night. After 7-8pm until around 11pm. Does anyone else notice this pattern?

And, I turned "fraudulent websites" off. For now. I have read that it updating while asleep may be the culprit.

We shall see....

man 3.1 is turning into that sexy chick that you want to get up with at the party but everyone knows she is crazy ass hell so you just don't deal with her. i made a couple of calls today but didn't get any response or answer too my questions. being no one knows if a patch or whatever is coming out.

It happened to me again today around 5:45pm.
Since they problems started after the update to 3.1, I'm sure your 3.1 backup has the exact same issue and it will happen again.

There won't be a patch, there will be an OS update. Since OS 3.1.1 is already out on the iPod Touch, the next update will likely be 3.2.

Yeah, like I said, I'm not holding my breath. Maybe a tiny, fervent prayer, but not my breath.

Most likely. And we just have to sit and wait per Apple's policy.

My phone went from flaky (unresponsive problem everybody is having in here) to downright schizo today. The phone could not make calls (nothing but silence), could not receive calls (callers wouldn't even get through to voicemail - they would get some weird tone), and never showed any bars.

Although Safari could download web pages, so it was obviously connected to the network in some way. The phone was clearly in a very weird state. Powering off/on did not help, nor did a hard reboot (holding down both buttons for 10 sec). I ended up restoring from my last backup (the one I made just before I upgraded to 3.1), and that seems to have fixed the total schizo issue for now.

It almost seems as though by rebooting the phone when it froze, I actually damaged the phone's operating system or something. Restoring from the backup obviously repaired something that was critical to the phone's operation - not just the music or some random app.

Feedback to Apple

Thanks to f00f for posting the feedback link for Apple. Here's what I sent so my complaint is official (although I'm not convinced they'll care).
-------------------------
Ever since the 3.1 OS iPhone update, my phone frequently goes to "sleep" and I can't turn it back on without holding down Home + Power buttons. Also, in just a few hours my battery will go from full to completely dead. If I put it on the charger, it will be back to full again in about 10 minutes. This all happened immediately after this upgrade and I had no problems ever prior to that. If the phone doesn't do this strange spontaneous shutdown, the battery will last its normal full day. It's when it shuts down that the battery seems to go crazy. This isn't a hardware issue... it's a firmware issue.

I've called tech support twice and dutifully did as I was told. I restored and reloaded the firmware and content files. Then they sent me to the Genius bar at the store only to be sent away telling me they couldn't help me!

I have been your biggest fan and spokesperson and that's the thanks I get. I have purchased 7 iPods, the iPhone despite being on the AT&T network, one Mac, and one PowerMac, and I'm a MobileMe subscriber and you turned me away when it was your faulty firmware that caused the problem!

You need to fix this issue and fast or you will have lost at least one very loyal customer.

For those having issues. Let me ask you this. How many of you have what I would call a PRISTINE phone. This means:

No altered carrier files
No restores from backups
ONLY authorized Apple updates
No hacks or other customizations that might exist

In other words - how many of you having issues (on a 3gs) have ONLY updated via itunes when Apple has issued a new release and who did not previously have an iPhone.

Trying to see if people like myself and my fiancee who have 3GS's and are "first timers" and have followed all legit methods are free of issues or if there are indeed people who have (for lack of better phrase) not tried to tinker and are having 3.1 issues.

I had a pristine (by your definition) 3G - never did anything to my iPhone other than apply the official updates. Today I was forced to do my first restore from backup to get my phone working again. 3.1 has turned me from a happy customer into a disgruntled customer. Unless they fix this problem very soon, I will soon become a non-customer.
