Mine is factory unlocked version and also experienced the same lock downs after update to 3.1

Just home from an 5 hour round trip from North East England to Sheffield and back (did have some Sushi while there so it's all good).
I have a white box replacement (so there is a black 16GB 3Gs in the O2 shop in the upper mall going begging) and I am trying to fit everything on it.... 3.0.1 is larger than 3.1 but i am unwilling to upgrade.

ps apparently they have just announced an Apple shop in the Newcastle area AT LAST!!!

pps last replacement's serial number was 924 and this one is 934.... i got my last replacement on june 27th give or take.

is it worth risking 3.1???

My 3GS was working great until the 3.1 upgrade. Now my calls are muddy and unclear. No other issues but the calls itself.

Anyone else have this problem.?

Is there a way to go back to 3.01?

Thx

Bob

Same thing happened to me yesterday.

I did a restore to my custom jailbroken 3.1 IPSW using Pwnage and it happened about 8 hours later. Happened this morning too. Was gonna whip it out to check some email and it wouldn't do anything, so I had to do a hard reboot.

I had a pristine (by your definition) 3G - never did anything to my iPhone other than apply the official updates. Today I was forced to do my first restore from backup to get my phone working again. 3.1 has turned me from a happy customer into a disgruntled customer. Unless they fix this problem very soon, I will soon become a non-customer.

by your definition, my phone is pristine. no desire to jailbreak, no restores from backups ever and only official non-beta updates. i'm still having the same problems. the crashing happens full battery or not and i sometimes see it crash upwards of a dozen times in a day.

also,
my phone is now just a bit over a year old
i have had push notifications off for the past few months and i make sure all push notifications are turned off on the apps that have the ability.

i would like to see 3.1.1 come out soon just to see if maybe it really is an issue w/ the 3.1 upgrade or whether it is a hardware problem.

I'm starting to wonder about a few things.

It seems that from reading, there are people that have replacement 3G phones that have no problems. And also people with newer 3G phones with no problems.

So I wonder, does anyone else notice this, that the early model 3G phones seem to be the units with the highest percentage of failures of the "coma".
Whether or not they've hacked or cracked it, I keep seeing those of us that got the early version of the 3G seem to be the ones having the majority of the problems.

Anyone else see this possibly?

Glad I found this thread! I think you're right about this...I got a 3G iPhone the day they came out and this problem has been affecting me as well. One day I went to text someone and it just wouldn't turn on. I finally had to reset it but since then it has been happening almost everyday. Usually when it does happen, it will occur numerous times in a row. I have to end up resetting my phone at least 3-4 times.

I've also noticed that my service is very inconsistent and sporadic (at the same place.) One second it will be 4 bars on 3g and the next I will have no service whatsoever..until I reset it and then it's fine (for the time being.) This is probably AT&T's problem but it seems like my phone may be defective somehow. I might end up taking it in to the Apple store to see what's up.

And no, it has never been jailbroken and is currently up to date at 3.1

Since restoring my iPhone 3GS as a "new phone" 3 days ago and manually reinstalling all my music/photos/apps and manually going through and changing all of the settings back they way I want them.... My iPhone 3GS under 3.1 has worked flawlessly. In fact, I continue to believe it is snappier than it was under 3.0.

Just sayin'.

That said, I know one thing for sure... A week or two before my 3GS is about to go out of warranty... if there's not a new model of iPhone on the near horizon that I expect to buy, I will most DEFINITELY be buying an Apple Care warranty for the 3GS!

You almost sound like Apple employee :apple:

No I'm not going thru all that crap again and again and again
No I'm not getting any Apple Care for a phone

You telling us basically to keep restoring the iphone and pay more for Apple care because of bad updates

This is Apple's fault so Apple should fix this

There are coming allot of lawsuit Apple's way if they don't fix this soon
Because I ain't gonna pay no damn phone bill if I can't use the phone and neither should anybody else

Truer words have never been spoken. So glad this thread has gained traction, but feel bad as so many others are having a sucky experience with what used to be the best phone I have ever used. I hope Apple get their finger out. I could never use another phone, tried loads of others. They all just suck. Annoying that Apple have me over a barrel like this

I've been an iPhone since it came out and a long time Mac user (with MobileMe) and I have never seen this poor an update by Apple on either platform. I'm having the same problem as everyone else. My iPhone is incredibly slow. It freezes up a lot, slow to scroll, I can't play back to back songs or it will crash, takes twice as long to load an application on to the phone.

I have been through ten restores, which I can assure is not fun. This seems rushed just like iTunes 9 was. This had also come out as the same time as Snow Leopard and can't but think that all of this, along with a timed September iPod event date, contributed to this poor update.

This is a phone that I need for work. I can't continue to have constant problems like this. They're not even allowing me to downgrade to 3.0 because Apple is blocking it through the verification process. Fix this Apple and now. It is clear there is something wrong with this update.

I have a Genius bar appt later today. My 3G is over a year old but in actuality its less because i got this current one (replacement) about 9 months ago. It was a brand new and not white box. The problem i have is most likely Apple will just go with the original phones warranty.

I'm hoping if i plead my case they will just give me another one even if its white box. Another new problem i am having is drop down menus in Safari don't work.. I choose a number on Ticketmaster.com or any other site and it doesnt change it.

Has anyone been successful getting a replacement phone after its been over a year?

Crazy iPhone/iPod touch

I have my iPhone on GoPhone so, I did a DFU mode restore to 3.1 Beta 3, then updated to 3.1 GM. When it said extracting Software, I disconnected from the Web. And it bypassed the connect to iTunes screen. the phone was never hacked or jailbroken. I'm not having any issues with 3.1 on my iPhone. But on my iPod touch, I started fresh. I did a DFU mode restore and updated to 3.1.1! I set up the iPod as a new iPod and because iTunes freezes when I click sync Apps, I have no Apps installed. I did put all of my music and podcast back on though. The issue is, sometimes when I type on the keyboard, the iPod locks up and needs a home+sleep wake button reset. Same happens when I launch and close one of the Apple Apps. What it more weird, is I let me iPod fall asleep and when I wake it up 13 minutes later, it won't wake up. Again, requiring a hard reset using the sleep and home button. This happens at least 5 times a day and is annoying. Other times I wake it from sleep, I get a white screen and need to reset again. Some times holding down the buttons have no effect. I can hold them down for 30 secs and no luck, and I have to wait 4 mins and try again. Apple sure screwed something up in this release. 3.1 and iTunes 9 and the most crappy versions of them yet. I would rather have apps crashing like in iPhone OS 2.0 then not being able to use this at all. iTunes is very bloated. slower than ever, and hangs all all the time. I miss iTunes 8. I hope iTunes 9.1 or 9.0.1 and iPhone OS 3.2 comes along soon... very soon.
I'm doing one last DFU mode restore of 3.1.1 on my iPod right now. I'm downloading a fresh .ipsw right now. I will set it up as a new iPod too. If that doesn't solve my issues, them I'm going back to 3.1 or even 2.2.1 where the graphics were all smooth. Funny thing is my Original iPhone is running iPhone OS 3.1 and I have not had any issues with it, just iPhone OS 3.1.1 on my iPod touch.
Boo Apple.

FWIW my own 3G is only three months old, and it also has this problem. After jumping through the required support wickets and trying all the proposed fixes I now have an appointment for "repair/exchange" at a genius bar this weekend.

Back from a two hour round trip to the Apple Store; no joy.

My "genius" offered to exchange my phone, but also told me that was unlikely to fix the problem. His only action was to restore my phone as a new one (which I could have done at home without making the drive, but telephone tech support told me restore from backup).

Since this problem seems to be much more prevalent with 3G phones, I asked if I could just pay the difference and exchange it for a 3GS. No dice.

FWIW boy genius told me he expects an update to 3.1 to come out on or about 25 September.

Update: less than 8 hours after reset my iPhone slipped back into its coma.

I just got back from the Apple Store.. They ended up giving me a new phone even though it was just over a year with my warranty.

I now have a white box refurbished unit that has 3.01 installed on it. The genius told me to keep it that way until a new update to 3.1 becomes available.

At first they weren't going to replace it but after showing them my issue with Safari drop down menus not working, they went ahead and did it reluctantly. I still can't use drop down menus on Ticketmaster.com so i'm guessing its a website issue.

Either way i got a somewhat new or newer phone and i'm cool with that, but the unresponsiveness issue needs to still be fixed with 3.1

I also got a new replacement phone today from the Apple store. So far the new phone has worked great and is definitely snappier than the old one.

Turn OFF Safari Fraud Protection

I had the same freezing problems as everyone else. I was barely able to do it, but I turned off the Safari preference for anti-fraud protection to OFF. Powered down, rebooted - and it now runs perfectly. This is too easy to not to try.

Playing music 24/7 on the iPhone stops the crashes for me... Not as user friendly as a fix from apple would be though.

In the meantime, lets have a laugh.

Yeah that would work.... if your using safari but it has nothing to do with turning the Iphone into a brick

Why are people always come with these idea's, just think for a sec and you'll know its nonsense

Thanks mate, I was so p!$$ed that this kept happening but so far your advise is working.

I had the same problem. Year old 3G was freezing 5 times a day after the 3.1 update. After a week, the phone also started doing this weird thing where after being restarted from the frozen state it began randomly taking screen shots over and over again.

I brought the phone in to the Apple store in Tokyo (Shibuya) and they exchanged it for a replacement. After a day or two of use, the phone is no longer freezing, but now it no longer recognizes wifi in my house! All of my other macs see the wifi network fine. My phone, however, is stuck in 3G. First I tried resetting the network settings. Nothing. Next I tried restarting the phone (multiple times), nothing. Next I tried restoring from back up, still have the same problem. Next I called Apple and they suggested restoring it to factory settings and NOT using my backup. I did that and still nothing. WTF?!

This is a massive waste of my time. I should bill Apple for my time.

This will not work as a long term solution. I tried this along with every other solution in this thread (disabling notifications, erasing all content & settings, re-downloading 3.1 and setting up as a new phone, etc) and eventually I'd have another lockup after a day or two. I still believe that my phone was locking up when I didn't even realize it, as I've seen it completely locked up after pulling it out of my pocket after not using it for 30 minutes, having to wait several minutes for the coma to end. So my 1-2 days in between lockups may not have been true at all.

The only permanent solution (and the one that has worked for me) is to roll back to 3.01. This is very easy for 3G owners (not 3GS owners unfortunately) and there are excellent instructions at the link below. You will need access to a Windows machine and you will need to uninstall iTunes 9 and Quicktime and re-install the previous version of iTunes. Links to everything you need are provided in the "more info" section on the right side of the page:
