I'm out of warranty and I went on Tuesday this past week with no luck. All they did was clean the dock connector and restore the phone with 3.1.

It blacked out on the way home :(

I then went on to jailbreak it as soon as the new update was out...Might as well.

Try calling (800-MY-IPHONE)... I just did (easier and better than wasting a trip to the store) and the dude said I could get it replaced. He kept stressing that this is a one time thing and will not happen again, and only because my warranty was 2 weeks over that it'd be ok. So I guess if a future software update renders my phone completely useless I'm SOL... haha

Hi

My 8Gb 3G is "pristine", as previously defined. Upgraded to 3.1, experienced this problem every day since.

This weekend I found time to do a clean restore and set up as new iPhone, rebuilding apps, settings, music, MobileMe and Exchange etc from scratch.

Set up everything as before, except for push notifications from ToDo.

Has now been fine for 24 hours, hasn't crashed once.

Will reconfigure ToDo, and see what happens with push enabled...

i tried both and no luck. :( i don't even care about replacing it, they caused this issue via software. it should be able to fix it via software.

i just got my replacement phone today at the store (whitebox, not new) and was wondering if i should restore from backup or make it a new phone. What do you guys think? will restoring it from backup lead to more problems?

I did call apple first and the guy told me it was a known issue and to take it to the apple store. He told me I wouldn't need to explain anything to the "genius" as he would be making notes in my file. When I got there the "genius" asked me what was wrong and I told him everything was in the notes. He asked me to explain anyway. So either there were no notes or the guy didn't bother looking them up.

He ran a diagnostic hardware test and said everything was fine. I told him it didn't start until 3.1.

No help. I know I'm out of warranty but don't brush me off with lame excuses. I will say he was very nice in all of this but he didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. Whatever. :-/

thought i'd add this..something i hadn't seen happen before. last night i was searching for a song on the itunes app and the app crashed after about 30 seconds of use. battery was full and no other apps had been used because i had just reset the phone after another crash. i have my genius appt on tuesday afternoon. i'll let everyone know what happens. the store i'm going to is only a little over a year old so i'm not putting any faith in the geniuses but we'll see.

I'm on 3.1 and it sucks, I sometimes find my phone sitting there looking normal but I get to work or home with people telling me they could not get a hold of me. Texts, voice mails, calls, nothing gets through. My phone looks normal, then I restart it and everything comes through, I'm like WTF!?!?!?

Okay, a status update on my part.

Short story: Apple customer relations are fantastic, and they're replacing my 16gb iPhone 3G: 1.5 months out of warranty.

Long story: I called Apple reception and knowing that I'm out of warranty (as of early August) I ask for customer relations to apply for an exception to my warranty. I politely explained the situation. I live in a city (Adelaide, Australia) where there are no physical stores or technicians for Apple or my service provider (Virgin Mobile). I told them everything I've done to troubleshoot the problem; including multiple restores, restores without using my backup, DFU mode restores. I explained to them that I work in an Apple reseller, and deal with iPod service jobs and warranty claims like this all the time. They were satisfied that I'm an 'advanced user'.
The operator checked with a technician, then came back to me satisfied that i'd tried everything they would and gave me a green light on a replacement.

They're emailing me a post bag label so I can send them my iPhone, and they'll mail me back a refurbished unit.

Apple swapped out my phone for a refurb because of the problem. After getting home, and restoring, the refurb wouldn't connect to wifi. Checked and all my other computers and wife's iPhone are able to connect. Talked to multiple people at Apple, wiped all my data and started fresh. Downloaded a new copy of 3.1 to make sure mine wasn't corrupted. Tried everything, wifi is still dead. Apple told me to make another genius appointment. Only problem, no appointments available. Last time it took me more than a week to finally get in. Now I'm stuck with a broken phone until I can get a reservation. Explained how dissatisfied I am to Apple, and asked if they could send me something in the mail. Answer, "No, we have no options for you but going to the retail store". The guy in Australia I talked with was a HUGE ****** on top of everything else. This has been a very bad experience with Apple.

I tried dealing with the folks here in Japan in Japanese since I had such a problem with Apple's English help services which are all outsourced to other spots in Asia and Australia. The woman told me that because I spoke with someone in Australia that is in a "department higher than hers" she didn't want to help me. What exactly am I paying for Apple care for!?

Anyway, I explained the situation to her in Japanese, and she said I have to get a reservation at the Apple store, but there are no reservations available, so they can't help me. When I asked to speak to her manager about this, she HUNG UP on me! It took 30 minutes to get Apple care on the phone in the first place. I feel like I'm in a Kafka book. All I want is my phone to work again!!!!

Same stuff here

After I've updated my iphone 3g 16gb to 3.1, it started to blank the screen, no response from any button, had to hard reset 3 or 4 times a day to bring it back on.

I've taken to the store that I've purchased it (there is no apple store here) and they have exchanged it to a new one. (Luckly the problem showed up in the store).

New Iphone, let's restore the data. It worked nice, 3.1 firmware, no lockups, nothing. Yesterday the WIFI was gone. There was no mac address, nothing. The lock problems were gone but i've lost my WI-FI connection.

Today I've exchanged it to the third Iphone. I'm not going to upgrade it, nor restore my contacts until the new version is out. it's woking fine with the no-mms 2.0.2 version.

Are the replacements coming with 3.1 or 3.01 from Apple store? I need a replacement but not going to if 3.1 is installed.

Exact same thing happened to me. After 3.1 I've had my phone go "offline" for any voice/txts for days at a time. I didn't realize a problem until someone came over to my house asking why I wasn't answering my phone.

Rebooting the phone then grabbed many missed voicemails and txts all at once.

Sucks.

3.1 saga continues

With no real fix available, I am going to sit and wait it out I believe. I feel (in my case anyway) the issue is something external causing the "comas". Three days in an around my home I have no issues. As soon as I get to work, I have three lockups requiring a hard reset to start the morning off. Even with Wi-Fi disabled, my phone locks up. The only thing I am seeing nearly every single time is a lockup at a location running a strong wireless signal. Places like my work place or a retail store cause my phone to go into the "coma" over and over again. Again, perhaps this is something I am experiencing alone. It looks like this 3.1 "upgrade" has various symptoms but mine suggests an external culprit at play.

Apple, please help us out a little. :(

mine came with 3.0.1 and that is where it is staying for the time being.

Not even two weeks old!

My Shiny new 3GS Just crashed on me for the second time, It's not even 2 weeks old, First it happened in the airport on my way to Ireland in less than 24 hours of owning it (My heart almost stopped) but thankfully it sorted itself out after about 30 seconds of button pressing, It happened just now but I had to hard reset the device.

Thankfully my experiences haven't been as bad as some. All in all other than these two crashes my device seems pretty solid although someone tried to call me the other day and they said it just kept ringing even though the phone never rung!

Hopefully Apple will patch it shortly, Other than that wow what an amazing phone!

I don't think this is a 3.1 problem only. When I had 3.0 on my iPhone 3GS (before I returned it), it randomly shut down on me once while listening to music.

However, since I've had my iPod touch 3rd gen, it has not crashed on me or become unresponsive... although I just returned it yesterday and bought a MacBook Pro.

The point is... I don't think it's just 3.1, but 3.0 was also bad. I hate OS 3 so much that I've resorted to using 2.2.1 until Apple comes out with a decent upgrade.

Update on my iPhone...

I had a lot of problems with the phone last Thursday evening (still not sure if it was a widespread network outage or not), which prompted me to restore from my last backup (which was made immediately before I upgraded to 3.1). Anyways... shortly after my restore, the phone locked up twice. This time I just let it sit (as opposed to doing a hard-reboot) and after a couple of minutes it came out of its coma. At some point on Friday (after reading this thread), I turned off the Safari anti-phishing feature.

Miraculously, my phone has been solid ever since. I haven't had a single freeze-up, and I have been able to make/receive calls with no trouble. It's only been a few days, and I don't know if/why it's really fixed, but at least I've had a few days without any problems. Of course it could freeze up again at any moment, but for now I am happy with my phone again for the first time since I upgraded to 3.1.

First time

For the first time I let my phone remain in the coma state. After about 10 minutes it did recover on it's own. When I pressed the HOME key I heard it snap a picture (a picture of a black screen was left in my pictures folder) then the home screen appeared.

Wow, what an unreliable POS this phone is now! Thanks again 3.1!

Hey guys,

The problem seemed to have calmed down since I reset EVERYTHING, and did a restore as a new phone. Lost all my stuff, what a pain but was going ok until today. Had a phone call from my sister at work asking why I hadn't answered my phone all day. I check my phone. It's dead. Hard reset. Flood of voicemails. Was livid. Just spent 20 mins on hold waiting to talk to Apple at 5p @ min only to be told by a guy (who had the WORST grasp of English) to go to the Apple store and see what they can do, or pay £150 for a refurb to be shipped out.

What a waste of time. They could not have been more helpful when I had problems before, but no I'm out of warranty the guy did not want to know. Didn't take serial, my name, phone number - anything. Wasn't interested.

It's not as if I paid £260 for the 1st iPhone, then £45 a month for my current 3G for the last 13 months, 2 annual subscriptions to MobileMe and over £1000 on a MacBook.

I'm bloody livid. Apple store tomorrow then, probably only to be told "tough ****" from the cocky individuals that work there.

*sigh*
