I was having this problem with 3.1 for a week or two. I called Apple's support line and after explaining everything he told me it was a "hardware issue" and that I could take it to a store to have it replaced. He said he put down in the case notes that it's been approved to be replaced and I just had to give the genius the case number. Guy on the phone was polite and awesome.

When I got to the store the Apple genius (kind of snobby) said "I don't need to look up the case number" and repeatedly told me that it was a corrupt software problem, even after I told him the person on the phone said otherwise. He did a complete restore on my phone (something I had already done) and handed it back to me.

As I was asking "so what happens if this happens again?" and he was explaining that he took case notes and the next tech could pick up where he left off, I hit the home button and bam, phone was frozen. I held it up, laughed, and said this is the problem I've been having. He took it and immediately said it was a loose screen connector and said it needed to be replaced. Got a new phone with 3.0.1, got home and restored it as a new phone with 3.1 and I haven't had a single problem yet.

thought this was a funny email

All the new features include:
-Freezing iPhones!

Thats kind of funny.

I wish I would have found this thread before I upgraded last Friday. I waited figuring I'd hear if something bad was going on, but I guess I didn't look hard enough. D'oh:eek:

Iphone Coma

This is happening constantly and apple expert told me to go to the store and give them the case number.

Got to the store and they would not do anything, claiming my moisture sensor on the bottom is tripped and that is the problem.

I really feel screwed over. I've expected alot more out of apple, considering the amount of money I spend with them. For the first time I am seriously considering taking my business elsewhere.

Just got a new phone from the Genius Bar, and it was a brand new phone, not a white box. He said that's what Apple told them to do for me.

Setup as new phone, updating to 3.1 right now. Will sync my apps, contacts, etc. I'll let you guys know how it is.

Well, had my new phone since Friday. Set it up as a new phone before work, updated to 3.1 and all was good.
As the day wore on, I couldn't stand not having my old info on there. When I got home, I right-clicked on my iPhone in the device list, and restored from my backup.

From Friday evening to right now, no lockups so far on my brand new iPhone (knock on wood).

8GB 3G, produced in the 23rd week of 2009.

Here is my experience. I hope this helps somebody get this resolved.

Device: Black 3G 8GB that is OUT OF WARRANTY by 54 days.
Network: at&t wireless in the USA.

Here we go...

-Updated to 3.1, experienced multiple screen blackouts.
-Called 1800MYIPHONE, was told to visit Genius Bar.
-Visited Genius Bar, did a DFU Restore to 3.1.
-Still experienced blackouts, even before I reloaded my settings/apps/gmail imap/google sync/etc.
-Called 1800MYIPHONE again, explained situation, was approved for a device replacement and was set up with an appointment that night at Genius Bar.
-Visited Genius Bar, explained situation again, referenced case number and account notes, and was given a white box replacement with 3.0.1.

Yikes. After about a week and a half of blackouts and 5 days of off-and-on contact with Apple at various levels, I finally have a phone that WORKS. I'll be sticking with 3.0.1 until this issue is (hopefully) fixed with the release of 3.1.1.

Good luck to everybody going through this mess.

I'm glad Apple is stepping up and offering replacement phones for those out of warranty, but this really isn't necessary, as a rollback to 3.0.1 is pretty simple and has fixed the issue for everyone (to the best of my knowledge). My previous post with the link to instructions:

The only permanent solution (and the one that has worked for me) is to roll back to 3.01. This is very easy for 3G owners (not 3GS owners unfortunately) and there are excellent instructions at the link below. You will need access to a Windows machine and you will need to uninstall iTunes 9 and Quicktime and re-install the previous version of iTunes. Links to everything you need are provided in the "more info" section on the right side of the page:

Urgh. I should have waited.

On September 9th after the "It's Only Rock And Roll" Apple Media Event, I updated my MBP to iTunes 9 and shortly thereafter updated my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 OS. I've had this iPhone 3G since Launch Day back in July 2008, and have luckily had great experiences in the past with my firmware updates from 2.0 onward. Not this time. Daily I experience at least 2-3 "comas", with today's culmination of 5 and a weird glitch where the phone rebooted straight to the Camera app, and each the Home button and the Sleep button only acted, when pressed, to take a screenshot of the display! Needless to say, another hard-reboot.

I've been following this thread for a while now, and I've tried the Apple Genius Bar. The Genius who helped me had heard of the issue, but said all he could offer me was a firmware restore, and even then he couldn't get my iPhone to accept anything BELOW 3.1. I walked out with 3.1 hopeful that it would work this time, but before I had even parked the car in my parking garage upon returning home I'd already coma'd out. I've tried restoring on my own, with and without backups. Deleted network settings, tried turning Safari-Anti-Fraud on and off, turning Notifications on and off, turning WiFi on and off - hell, I even tried the bogus method of leaving the phone charging with wifi on and Safari open to properly download the anti-fraud information - all to no avail. This 'update' has made this device near worthless.

By no means will I write off Apple products here, but c'mon Apple. QA: Quality Assurance. It's coding for 3 different hardware configurations - not 10, not 100, not 1000 - just THREE.

I'm left deciding whether or not I want to go argue with the Genius Bar again tomorrow, demanding some kind of replacement. My 1-year warranty is obviously out of effect here, but if anyone dare suggest I should have bought AppleCare for this device, I want to ask you one thing: Why should I have to purchase AppleCare to protect myself from APPLE THEMSELVES? My iPhone has no physical deformities, and I take pristine care of the device. All I've done to this device is upgrade it at Apple's OWN recommendation. If that doesn't warrant a fix of some kind from Apple, I don't know what does.

Someone visited a genius bar and was told to expect a patch by thursday....

We wait and see...

I've updated my 3Gs to 3.1 on the day it came out, and apart from some issues where it takes a wee while to answer a call (And to be fair I can't remember if this was like this with 3.0.1) I have no issues. I muller any smartphone as I check four email accounts, iPod, web browsing and playing Tiger Woods gold so getting around a day for me is par for the course.

I'd be really interested if the issues are more in the states or areas of bad signal TBH.

Unfortunately that's not the case, as I live in the heart of Atlanta, GA, and I can see the AT&T Mobility Headquarters skyscraper from my apartment window.... this is about as stable of a signal as one can get, really. If I have anything less than 5 bars and 3G, it's either a rarity or I've somehow wandered into a MARTA subway station and not noticed it.

This happened to me too! I don't remember it being locked into the camera, but when I tried to wake mine and found it in a 'coma', I mashed the buttons in exasperation and maybe 15 seconds later it woke up with every button press taking a screenshot. At the time I thought I'd maybe stuck down the lock button so that pressing home was registering as both being pressed together, but apparently I'm not the only one.

Not sure about everyone else, but I had my work exchange account on my phone and since 3.1 my battery life was sucking and it would freeze to where I was rebooting the phone atleast once every day. Since I've removed the Exchange account yesterday my phone has been working like a champ and battery life is astounding since it hasn't moved an inch and usually it's down 50%. I've also found before 3.1 with my wifes phone when she had 2 different yahoo emails that would mess up her phone and suck the battery life down becuase the accounts were cancelling each other out when trying to check for mail. I think it has something to do with what email accounts you have set up on your phone.

Just my 2 cents

The following fixed my lockup problem:

My issue was the following set of events:
(1) Phone Would go to sleep
(2) hitting the home button would would take 10 seconds to bring the phone out from sleep. It would stay on the black screen for about ~10 seconds
(3) Once it did wake up it would take another 5-10 seconds for it to become responsive again.

The following set of steps seems to have fixed the issue:
(1) Settings -> Wifi : Disabled Wifi
(2) Settings->Reset->Reset Network Settings
(3) Reboot
(4) Settings -> Wifi : Enable Wifi

My iPhone has not locked up since. ( 5+days now of constant usage).. the previous lockups would occur within a few hours of a phone reboot.

It seems like there might be several causes of the unresponsive behavior.. but this at least fixed mine.

Went to trade in my phone (got a refurb) but the dude didn't want to exchange it but said since I had a case number (I called a few days ago) he would honor it. Comes back and tries to tell me the freezing is because I jailbroke the phone (forgot to do a restore to 3.1, did a update instead because I was in a hurry so Cydia was still there apparently) and I say it's because of 3.1 and if I did a DFU restore Cydia would be gone but he says nope, Cydia always stays on and it' why it's freezing. I smile say thanks and just take my new phone.

Hopefully this issue will stop.

I just got off the phone with AppleCare after my 45 minute phone call. Yes, 45 Minutes! And it was actually a really pleasant call, they guy was really cool and while he was typing up my report we talked about everything from car stereos, to how much AT&T sucks, to football. Anyway, the rep told me that he has been receiving in excess of 100 calls per day specifically about this problem, and the Apple is probably doing something about this but no one tells him what they're doing.

He said he wished they would have released a statement about this issue with the statement about the battery issue they issued last week. But he told me that he knows Apple well enough to know that even though it's annoying to all of us that it seems like they aren't answering our questions about this problem they have got to be working on something to fix it because they care about their image so much.

So I know this really gives nothing to any of us in the form of solid news, but this is MacRumors so I thought I would give you this rumor even though it seems like he was telling me that they are working on it, but not saying anything.

mac store visit: rep did full restore as new and said he hoped it would work. he said the store has had lots of visits but with different problems. well the full restore seemed to work. 45 minutes later it crashed 3 times in 10 minutes. callback scheduled tomorrow. more updates after the call.
update: call with apple tech support Wednesday has resulted in another visit to an apple store on Saturday. phone will be replaced. the rep said they'd had over 11k calls in the 5 hours he'd been there and he personally had only been dealing with 3.1 problems. no info on the actual problem but he was sick of the calls. I wouldve been too. he did tell me that the replacements have been working much better. he also hoped that apple would sneak in a patch but he didn't sound too optimistic.
