Does anyone else seem to follow this pattern - mine will be fine for 2-3 days, then I'll get several lock ups in a day, then it will be fine for while. Strange it doesn't happen on a more regular basis. I've tried to figure out what I'm doing when it happens and if there are any patterns, but I can't come up with nothing. I just go to turn my iPhone on and it won't come on. So I go the Home/Power route.

Probably a blackout. I had pulled my phone out of my pocket on several occasions only to find it in coma mode - just as you've described. A hard reset works, but mine always came back to life on it's own after a few minutes.

I'm just going to downgrade to 2.2.1 again. I don't know why I wanted to upgrade to 3.1.

Just come back from apple store meadowhall.

3g 3 days out of warranty, replaced no problem with 3.0.1 phone.
And a 90 day warranty.

Good customer service.

Printing out the baseband crash log (earlier on this thread) helped show the trouble started on sep 11.

Won't be so quick to update next time!

Can't be a baseband problem because I've downgraded to 2.2.1 and I never have lockups.

Mine is doing that. My phone locked up several times a day initially, sometimes several times back-to-back. Then one day it seemed to not happen but once or twice a day. I am now back to the lock ups several times a day once again.

Would some please post the instructions to roll back to 3.0.1 again? One question about that though, does that change if I upgraded the carrier to 5.5? In other words, there were ways to revert back to 3.0.1 but those were before the carrier update came out.

Thanks!
:(

ask youtube.

i got my phone replaced 3 days out of warranty thanks to a baseband error log and nice genius.

3.1 is poison, downgrade and watch your troubles dissappear.

There are a few methods for downgrading to 3.0.1. This is the one I used:

Downgrading to 3.0.1 will downgrade your AT&T carrier file to 4.0 but you can easily apply the 5.5 file manually. I did this on 9/25 and have had no issues using MMS. Link to do this:

I've already downgraded to 2.2.1. I love 2.2.1 so much... I just know that it's where everything is fast, stable and safe.

I haven't had any lockups on my 3G for 1 week, last lock up was on last Monday. It then worked fine for a couple days and then I reset my network settings and turned off fraudulent site warning - since then no lock ups!

Knock on wood, but I've had no lockups for about 5 days now. Not sure what fixed the problem (if it is fixed), but right now my iPhone is working just fine and I'm still on 3.1.

I went over a week without any problems whatsoever. I thought the problem had magically gone away. But then yesterday it locked up again. This time it locked up a couple of minutes after I pulled it of the charger (first time I tried to turn it on after removing it, it took like 5 minutes to come alive).

What version of iTunes was used to upgrade?

Just something that occurred to me the other day (I've read most of this thread, but accept my apologies if it was already discussed).

For those of you experiencing the lock-up/coma issue with 3.1: What version of iTunes did you use to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1? iTunes 8 or 9?

It seems that most of those who have no problems used iTunes 9 to upgrade. If most of you with problems used iTunes 8, maybe we have something there....

version of iTunes was used to upgrade

I have used iTunes 8 and i have the problem ... now i try to restore my iPhone with iTunes 9

(I have tried to delete my MobileMe account on the iPhone - but without success - the phone still come in "unresponsive mode" )

Well I tried a complete restore. Now my phone is going into coma mode all the time. Well at least more than it did before I did the restore.

I'm going to now try this.
Restore to default 3.1 firmware. But not restore the back up. Just the OS.

Then manually sync up my apps, contacts, etc.

I've heard from some that doing this without restoring from a backup resolves this issue.

Can't hurt to try.

I went about a week to ten days before it went into coma twice today. Seems like the battery runs down a lot during it's bad times.

Very weird.

iphone 3g 16 gig
updated to 3.1 (7C144)
at&t 5.0
no mobileme
I am using wifi
using activesync to my company corporate exchange email server.

I've had the phone "blackout" on me where I've had to do a hard reset
but just once or twice so far, it's not as chronic as seems to be with the
posts here.

The big things I've noticed is I'll go from one page of apps to the other and it sort of pauses as if it's running something in the background that it's trying to work on before it can replot the screen. Another thing is it will get stuck in an app or another app and I have to press the button at the bottom multiple times to get it to respond.

It definetely seems to be running slower than before.

Me as well. Maybe a pattern? Have had a couple more lockups during the day today. Boo, not impressed. Maybe will downgrade to 3.0?

I don't have MobileMe but I'm having this issue. In fact, the last time it happened the phone was quite warm (almost hot). A reboot fixed it, but it tends to happen every three days or so. Been happening ever since I upgraded to v3.1.

This sucks!

Well I was wrong. I did a DFU restore. Just put on the plain old 3.1. Nothing else. No restore from backup.
And within 10 minutes of the restore...coma mode.
Oh well, I've got an appt with apple store on Wednesday. Will probably get a replacement then.

Oh BTW, when talking to the apple tech he mentioned that they know this is a widespread problem and are looking for data on it. So at least they're acknowledging this problem now unlike before.

I think it's unfair that people are getting new phones. Why can't the Apple genius bring it outback and downgrade it to 3.0.1 or something? People shouldn't be able to get a new phone for a software issue.

People shouldn't *need* to get a new phone because of a software issue--and yet I did. I would have been perfectly content if my"genius" would have just rolled my OS back, but that wasn't an option. It was Apple's choice; nothing unfair about it.

I'm not sure if this was already posted but here is the place to check you crash log on windows

C:\Users\[Your Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\]Your iphone Name] iPhone

Mine has been doing it also and its a 16GB :(

Mine has been doing this ever since I upgraded to 3.1... It happens several times a day and it feels like it's getting worse. I've about had it with my iPhone 3G... Seriously. I'd been planning to switch to a Palm WebOS based device once one came to Verizon, but if this keeps up for another week or so I think I'm just going to jump ship, this is just crazy.

I restored my phone last night at around 11 PM. No problems until about 130 today. Funny thing is 130 is when I got back from the apple store - the genius restored my phone.

EDIT: Just did it again...UGH.

I've been having the same issue since upgrading to 3.1 I live in Ohio and it happens at least once a day, the past week I was in Las Vegas and AT&T's 3G network is absolutely awful anywhere near the strip, and my phone would go blank about 4-6 times a day. I don't know if the blank out is related to switching between 3G and Edge, or if it has something to do with getting a call or a text, but it seems like most of the time when my phone locks up, after rebooting it I have a text or a voicemail.
