What's odd about this entire situation is it's not consistent.

My fiancee has this issue. We had the phone replaced and the REPLACEMENT is doing it too.

My phone is absolutely fine.

Not sure what it could be. Her phone is white, mine is black. Not sure if that helps pinpoint anything. Both 16GB.

Different backup files probably. Is he restoring his iPhone from a previous backup?

same thing for me. at least 6 times so far.

The phone will not turn on and when I plug it into itunes it doesn't register, its like the phone is bricked.

The only thing that fixes it is if I hold down the power and home key and do a reset.

very annoying.

Happened to me once about 2 wks ago.

8GB bought 11 SEP 09
No MobileMe
Updated the firmware a few days after buying when recommended while it was connected to PC w/iTunes
It was at home, where I have my wifi

Thought I was going crazy, held top button for several secs, tried home button, (didn't know about pressing both simultaneously), tried plugging in charger and unplugging several times, then it just came back to life for no apparent reason as I was getting it out of the Otter Box to put it in its original box to return it to the AT&T store.

Wife's 8GB has not had the problem at all; we've not loaded the updated f/w on this one yet and having read this, we won't be any time soon. Both phones bought the same night.

Issue that I just cannot look past anymore

Does anyone elses iPhone occasionally just become completely dysfunctional? I'll lock the screen and want to check the time a minute or two later and it just WON'T wake up. The screen stays black, neither one of the face buttons work to wake it from sleep, and the only way so far I have found is to hard reset it using the home and power buttons....typically the signal also drops out to about 1 bar or so before this happens. Is it only me that's having this issue? I LOVE not being able to use my iPhone for sometimes several minutes......The phone when in this state IS on, if I have my headphones on I can hear the clicking and popping of the audio jack being turned on and off.

Its happening to thousands upon thousands of people and is due to 3.1

Was happening to me all the time, but not happened in the last 2 days since I did a restore and set it back up as a new phone. Give that a try.

This happens to me almost every day. Very annoying. Not sure what to do except wait for the bug fix. I already tried restoring as a new iphone but the problem persists.

That was the first thing (or was it the second thing?) I tried. In my case, that particular "fix" worked for seven hours.

What *does* work is exchanging the phone for one running 3.0.

It's been a while since my phone has gone to coma mode. I'd say more than a week. Tonight I went through my usual routine of IM'ing (via BeejiveIM) my people at home and then headed home from work. I left Beejive open but put the phone to sleep and didn't touch the phone for over 2 hours. (Note that my phone was plugged in all day at work and thus fully charged.) The next time I went to use the phone I noticed it was very warm -- not burning hot but much warmer than room temperature. (If only I had the infrared thermometer I use to find the coldest beer in the fridge, I'd have taken its temperature.) And, much to my disgust, it was in a coma. The increased temperature is a sure sign that either one or more of the radios (wifi, cell, BT) was going haywire, or there was a program going haywire and devouring CPU cycles. More than likely it's the latter since this all started w/ 3.1 software update.

I thought maybe I'd get some useful info by plugging the phone into my MBP and launching the iPhone config utility to look at the console. Nope. In coma mode this thing doesn't talk to the USB bus so I did the usual two-finger, 10-second salute. Upon reset the phone's battery gauge read about 25%. Whatever this thing was doing the past two hours, it warmed up quite a bit and ate 75% of the battery along the way.

It doesn't have anything to do with the cell chip. My wife's iPhone is currently SIM less and her's went into coma mode a few days ago. I told her to do the "two finger salute" and it booted back to life. It had me scared for a second or five. She has a black 3G and I have a white 3G both 16GB and mine hasn't done this yet thankfully.

unfortunately no correction after restoring under itunes 9.0

i've restored my iPhone now under iTunes 9.0 unfortunately this doesn't correct this problem ... but now i have only one comma-mode per day and if i wait 3-5 minutes the iPhone turns upward.

Buttons unresponsive

Hello All

I have just had my worst Apple experience and came to the forum hoping to feel better. I read all the threads relating to 3.1 and my phone (3G) was behaving exactly the same except worse. It started freezing on the weekend. The only way I could wake it was to press the top botton. Whilst frozen, I had to take a call. Was working at the time so took it via the head phones only to find out that that too, was not working. The volume button was not working and also the switch to turn off sound. Tried restoring the Phone, still problem stayed. Booked it into the Genius support desk. The support guy was very helpful checked it out by opening it and restoring and said he could not see any visible dammage but because it was 2months out of warranty he will have to get permission to replace it. So along comes MR "Authority" and decides that the only way I can have a working Iphone is to part with $250 because I did not take out an Applecare warranty.
Surley looking at all the issues that have been occuring with version 3.1, you would hope that apple would just accept the fact that it is and inherent problem with my Phone or that for the sake of good customer image they would just replace it and allow me to walk away a happy customer. No I had to stand there, for a good half hour, trying to convince the manager why he should be giving me a new phone since I, in no way was responsible for breaking it. All said, I did get a new one but it certainly did not make me feel satisfied in anyway that at the end of the day apple were saying I "broke" the phone after warranty. I wish I had read this forum before hand but I guess the Apple manager was not going to read it ....would he now!!! :D
All said, it has not been a good experience and I have lots more to say about the aurgument regarding whether it should have been replaced free of charge or not. Needless to say that I did not even have the choice to have it fixed at hopefully a reduced price.
Surely had they just admitted that the was and inherent problem with the phone or with 3.1 and just replaced it, I would have been allot happier than to have to justify why they should be giving me a replacement for free.

Yeah since the 3.1 upgrade my phone has gone to crap. I have to hard reset it like twice a day. I took it to apple and they said restore it. Also, my phone doesnt respond to a lot of links like if I look something up on Google and I want to look at Google Images the link wont work.

I haven't had any lockups on my 3G for 1 week, last lock up was on last Monday. It then worked fine for a couple days and then I reset my network settings and turned off fraudulent site warning - since then no lock ups!

Now great, 9 and a half days I was happy with no lock ups and now you're starting over again, this is what you give me iPhone? Do you enjoy lying just next to me and not talk to me at all? Now come on, wake up. Wake! Up!

Well my iPhone went coma-less for about 5 days. I then had the big idea of trying Gmail Push again. Within 5 hours of reactivating Push, I tried to turn my iPhone on. When I picked it up, I noticed the back was hot and sure enough it was in a coma. After doing a hard reset, my battery was way down. I removed Gmail Push and went back to regular IMAP. It has been fine now for 3 days.

You know, with so many folks complaining about this you'd think Apple would have a fix by now. When I was in the Apple Store Sunday the Genius I was talking to had heard all about the problem but had no fixes other than just dong the hard reset.

My 3G 3.1 has not gone coma since i received ATT carrier file 5.5

Always had a hunch it could have been a alleged ATT problem. This may seem somewhat looney, but it is what i, had experienced.

I use a wireless infrared headset to my TV. My phone sits in almost the direct stream from the TV unit feeding infrared signal to my headphones. I randomly get interference in a series of beeps and tones. This is not email fetch in regular intervals but random interference. Push is off.
When i move my phone out of the direct infrared stream the interference stops.
Point is i was hearing things happening with my phone. Many times after the interference of beeps and tones my phone used to become unresponsive requiring hard reset.
This does not happen now after the carrier update file was downloaded the day of release.

Whatever, my $.02

It's not just AT&T that has the problem. I'm on Rogers in Canada and my phone has every issue that's been reported.
