Because the problem is not simply a software issue. My phone has and still is working flawless on 3.1.

I can't believe there are individuals arguing not to take advantage of my warranty. Incredible.

I've been saying this from the beginning. A new phone from Apple fixed my problem and I'm using 3.1 now without any issues.

Well I have to say, at least in my case, my lockups seem to be push related. Over the last month, when I've locked up, I've had push enabled for either Gmail or Google Calendar and Contacts. Every time I deactivated push I don't get lock ups. I've gone now 5 days with no problems.

I had four lockups within a week or so, disabled nothing, went for over a week with no lockups and then got two more over two day's time. The last two lockups happened while at my g/f's parents' house where there happens to be four iphones and an Airport at any one time. I stopped going to her parents' house and the lockups have ceased. :D And yes, this is 100% truth (as ridiculous as it sounds), but the real point here is that this bug, on a case-by-case basis, seems terribly random, making it a serious pita for :apple: to fix this.

im amazed that its been a month since 3.1 and there still is no 3.1.1 i've delt with the coma probably 50 times now. but mine has "water damage". next phone i'm getting i'm buying a rubber stopper to put in the bottom. not even sure if they make one.

What?

Either you are trying to be funny or I don't know what you are getting at.

Went to the link you posted and then downloaded the file. after downloading the file I was unable to find the location to copy and paste the file into in order to downgrade back to 3.0:confused:

You don't need to copy and paste. Just download the .ipsw, and hold down shift while clicking restore and find the .ipsw. Then let it doe its thing, and continue with the rest of the guide.

I was looking around for a solution for this and ran into ih8sn0w (jailbreak only) and their repo has a supposed fix for it.

So far it's been working for me.

Their repo is cydia.ih8sn0w.com

AHHHHHH LOL. I used Snow Leopard and whacked the 3.0.1 file on my desktop. Downgraded no problems. You do need a windows pc tho for quickpwn! Sorry for the mixup!!!

So I can't just download the file onto my Macbook Pro without a pawn and get this done?

Can it be done without being pawned on a Macbook Pro?

I've no idea mate. All I know is you need QuickPwn (that specific version mentioned on the guide) to kick it out of recovery mode. It is really easy if you can get anywhere near a windows machine.

I have been having the coma issues since 3.1 upgrade. I kept saying to myself "it'll shake out in 3.1.1..." This morning, I had 5 crashes/comas. Went to the genius bar and they swapped it out - said diags said I have a battery issue. <shrug>

Don't care what caused it, but I got a new (refurbed probably) phone, and that was 7 hours ago. I haven't had the issue since.

I did notice that the screen on this one is distinctly warmer in color. Oh well, you can't have everything.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

For those that have had no issues with replacement, what is the production week of your device?

Hi everyone!

I have not updated my iPhone's firmware to 3.1 yet. i read back in this thread about problems.

My version is 3.0.1.

When I synch, I do get 'My_Space app not synched to iPhone' because a newer version of the iPhone OS is needed.

Question is - should I wait until the next update is available, or go ahead because only a few people are having issues.

There's currently a 131 page thread about the 3.1 lockups on Apple's own discussion forums, so I would say that it's affecting more than a "few". I realize that this is well under 1% of all iPhone users worldwide, but it's still a fair number of people. Why this isn't bigger news is beyond me.

Anyway, you can always roll back to 3.0.1 if you experience problems. It's a little bit of a PITA, but it's not TOO bad. Several have already posted links to rollback instructions, so I won't do that. Oh, and 3G is easier to rollback, but I think someone might have found a way to rollback the 3GS - not sure. I have the 3G and rolled back after the lockups. 1 app that I barely use released a newer version that only works with 3.1. It's a good thing my TimeMachine backup has all my older apps & files :)

Okay, a status update on my part.

Short story: Apple customer relations are fantastic, and they're replacing my 16gb iPhone 3G: 1.5 months out of warranty.

Long story: I called Apple reception and knowing that I'm out of warranty (as of early August) I ask for customer relations to apply for an exception to my warranty. I politely explained the situation. I live in a city (Adelaide, Australia) where there are no physical stores or technicians for Apple or my service provider (Virgin Mobile). I told them everything I've done to troubleshoot the problem; including multiple restores, restores without using my backup, DFU mode restores. I explained to them that I work in an Apple reseller, and deal with iPod service jobs and warranty claims like this all the time. They were satisfied that I'm an 'advanced user'.
The operator checked with a technician, then came back to me satisfied that i'd tried everything they would and gave me a green light on a replacement.

They're emailing me a post bag label so I can send them my iPhone, and they'll mail me back a refurbished unit.

Morale of the story: Call Apple. Be polite. Explain your situation.

I've since received my replacement iPhone. Everyone has been asking me how I did this, so I wrote up exactly what I did.

Thanks jkozlow3 for your help! I think I will wait for the next uodate!

I am new to iPhone so best tihng is to learn and enjoy with my current firmware!

Thanks again!

3.1 has clearly messed up my phone. I don't even realize i'm not getting phone calls or texts until i try to make a call or text. Then i reset and see a bunch of VM and texts. It's terrible. I had no idea this was happening to so many people. I read and tried today and it's worked to turn 3G off. It keeps it working as a phone at least. I use Wi-fi a lot of time anyway. We should get a credit for the time we can't use 3G.

I think it has something to do with the background notifications. I use the AOL IM app, and I have constant lockups while using it...

It's really annoying. I'm waiting for 3.1.1 or something like that.

Minor lag has cropped up now (2 weeks since it came out?), on my iPhone 3G after 3.1 upgrade. Again nothing major but yes the phone seems to be unresponsive for couple of seconds. Hope this is sorted out by apple soon and doesnt become a major issue
